Love at the Wrong Table

Chapter 2143 A Battle of Wits and Power

“Who’s there? Is it Serpent King? Come out! I want to talk to you!”

Solana still summoned her courage, calling out boldly.

Yet, there was no response. The mysterious figure did not appear. So, she continued her cautious search within the dimly lit structure of the altar.

Moments later, as she ventured deeper, an eerie sight greeted her. Her heart froze with dread as she felt goosebumps erupt across her skin.

The intricate patterns of the altar suddenly glowed, casting a sickly light over the surrounding containers filled with dark, viscous liquids.

To her shock, the containers were not filled with any substance, but with naked women.

They lay motionless, their hair shaved clean, their eyes open in a disturbing stillness. Some seemed lifeless, yet others bore a faint, unnatural breath that made them appear as though they were trapped between life and deaths

Was this the sacrifice for Serpent King?

What could he possibly want with these women?

Suddenly, from the shadows, a massive serpent slithered into view, its cold, predatory eyes gleaming in the dark.

Solana, whose courage had been tested before, now recoiled instinctively, leaping back in fright.

Without warning, the serpent lunged with the force of a thunderstorm, its massive tail swinging toward her.

Luckily, Solana was quick on her feet, and though she avoided the crushing blow, she was caught in the furious gusts created by its movement. The force of the wind sent her crashing to the ground in a heap.

It was over.

Solana knew that if the serpent struck again, she had no chance of escaping.

Just then, a voice crackled through her earpiece–it was Magnus.

She quickly shouted, her voice trembling but determined, “Serpent King, if you kill me, you’re as good as dead!”

The serpent halted, its terrifying eyes narrowing in confusion.

The next moment, a grotesque scene unfolded.

The giant serpent opened its gaping mouth, and from within, a man covered in the serpent’s vile fluids crawled out from its throat.

His body was slender and unnaturally flexible, his long hair cascading around him, while his cold, serpent- like eyes flicked toward Solana. His tongue flicked from his mouth, much like that of a snake.

Since joining the Wolf Warrior Unit, Solana had encountered the Serpent Spirit that followed Eve, but this man seemed to belong to the same disturbing breed, only with the added twist of a gigantic serpent as his

“steed.

“Heh heh… What do you think?” The man licked his long, crimson tongue, a wicked smile curling on his lips. “How could I possibly die if I kill you?”

As the man spoke, Magnus‘ voice rang again in Solana’s ear. She, in turn, spoke fiercely:

“The Wolf Warrior Unit has surrounded your base, inside and out. Bombers, fighter jets, and multiple heavy artillery pieces–do you think you can withstand modern firepower like that?”

The Serpent King’s eyes darkened, but he remained eerily still, making no move.

“I’m just a messenger from the Wolf Warrior Unit. If you lay a hand on me, you’re declaring full–scale war with them!” Solana’s voice rang coldly with resolve.

“Our strategist, Magnus, is no saint. He won’t show mercy to any life, especially not to the vile, lowly sc*m born into this world tainted from the start!”

She barked her words with an icy finality.

“Heh… is that so?” The Serpent King’s expression twisted into a mocking sneer. “If you truly had no mercy for life, you’d have initiated the bombing by now, wouldn’t you? Why wait till now?”

Solana’s eyes flashed with a momentary pause, but she quickly recovered, her lips curling into a confident smirk. “Is that what you think? Then listen to the sounds outside.”

The moment the Serpent King, felt the tremor, he immediately controlled his emotions, hiding every ounce of his surprise.

In the next moment, a massive roar erupted from the outside, shaking the very air.

Boom! Boom! Boom.

Though the Serpent Altar was situated within a stone building, the sound still rang out, deafening. The entire Serpent base seemed to quake beneath the force, as if the mountains themselves trembled.

Serpent King’s face turned even more grim, twisted with fury.

“What’s going on?!” he demanded, his voice sharp.

Outside, in the camp on the edge of the Serpent base, Mackenzie felt the massive disturbance echo through the mountain range. Without hesitation, she rushed out of her tent, and her eyes were met with a terrifying blaze.

Through the swirling snow and gusting winds, thick black smoke spiraled upward. In the midst of the chaos, the shape of a mushroom cloud faintly rose into the sky!

“Report to Mackenzie!” Eve quickly ran over to Mackenzie’s side, gasping for breath. “You authorized Magnus to fire upon the Serpent base. He just ordered a strategic missile to be launched, with a warhead yield of 100,000 tons!”

“What?!” Mackenzie exclaimed in disbelief.

“100,000 tons!” Eve repeated, his voice tinged with horror.

“Outrageous!” she cried. “Does he not realize that doing this will kill countless innocent people?”

Before she could process the full weight of the situation, one of the warriors from Dark Night Island, standing nearby, displayed a shocked expression.

Rhett, too, had not anticipated Magnus going so far.

Though he wasn’t well–versed in modern military technology, Rhett could tell that the explosion they had just witnessed could level an entire mountain. Such destruction was far beyond the capability of any martial artist.

For a long moment, Mackenzie stood in silence, still feeling the aftershocks of the blast. But deep down, she trusted Magnus. He wouldn’t act so recklessly. If he did, he’d have no way of explaining himself to her.

Killing the innocent would serve him no purpose. Perhaps this was just his way of attempting to force a surrender without further violence?

She had always adhered to the principle: Trust those you employ; distrust those you suspect.

Though Mackenzie had never fought in a war, her business experience had taught her much. Through their interactions on this journey, she had come to trust Magnus, even if just a little.

Five minutes later, the tremors from within the Serpent Altar gradually subsided.

The Serpent King remained silent.

Solana, after receiving his orders, couldn’t suppress his satisfaction as he spoke up with a smug grin, “So, Serpent King, how does that feel? I’m sure you don’t want all your efforts of decades ruined in one blow. Are you willing to take a gamble with me?”

The cruel grin that had once adorned Serpent King’s face vanished, replaced by seething anger.

“How dare you?!”

Solana’s words did not falter as he proudly declared, “What’s wrong with threatening you? We could kill you, too. Do you believe that?”

“You-” Serpent King roared in fury.

Before he could even finish, his body coiled like a serpent. In a flash, he seized Solana and squeezed him with an iron grip, his voice a growl of pure rage.

“Dare to threaten me?! For so many years, no one has ever dared speak to me like this! No one!!!”

Despite the suffocating pain in his chest, Solana still managed a smug smile. “Go ahead. Kill me, and you’ll have your Serpent King and your thousands of followers join me in the grave. At least I won’t lose.”

The more Serpent King’s anger boiled, the more he hesitated. That explosion had left a shadow in his

heart.

He understood now that his adversary was no kind–hearted fool. This was a person who would stop at nothing.

If he killed this woman, who knew what kind of weapon would be sent next time? And who knew where it would strike?

“Every man of substance has his faith, and you are no different, Serpent King,” Solana continued, following Magnus‘ orders. His smile was full of manipulation. “You’ve built your empire, constantly striving to grow stronger. Surely you’ve been aiming to become the leader of the Five Poison Sect, haven’t you? Surrender to the Wolf Warrior Unit, and I’ll make that dream of yours a reality.”

“What did you say?!” Serpent King flinched at the words

Solana had struck a chord, but it wasn’t a difficult guess. The leaders of the Five Poison Sect had fought amongst themselves for years, each one desiring to conquer the others. It was no secret that their ambitions lay in such a direction.

As for any greater goals, they could only be pursued once they achieved that dominance.

“I’m saying exactly what you want to hear,” Solana retorted with a smug grin.

Elsewhere in another camp, Magnus stood with confidence, his smile unwavering as he spoke.

“Just surrender now, and promise to assist the Wolf Warrior Unit in bringing other bases under control. We’ll make you the next leader of the Five Poison Sect!”
