Lies in My Marriage by Lane Abbott

Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Just as I was about to speak, Tania appeared holding a bottle. “Sir, ma’am, it’s

time for dinner!”

I had no choice but to hold back my words.

Before acting impulsively, I needed to understand Kevin’s intentions. After all,

recent events spoke volumes.

Furthermore, Felix was still a child, and children only recognize those who take

care of them. At the moment, I wasn’t capable of looking after him myself.

Since Tania dared to confront me, dealing with a child who knew nothing

wouldn’t be a problem for her.

I reached out to Tania, saying, “Give me the bottle. I’ll feed Felix.”

However, Felix was bouncing around Tania in excitement, his eyes fixed on

her. He didn’t even look at me. To him, she was his mother.

I stubbornly extended my hand, attempting to take Felix from Kevin, but his

little hands impatiently brushed mine away while urgently reaching out to

Tania.

Kevin picked him up and handed him to Tania. Then, he gently helped me up

and said, “Let’s go! It’s time for dinner! Otherwise, you’ll be famished later.

Food replenishes your health faster than medicine.”

His casual words made my heart skip a beat. It seemed Kevin didn’t know the

secret of the medicine, or else he wouldn’t have said that. This statement

clearly meant he wanted me to eat more and rely less on the drug.

Of course, this also reminded me that I couldn’t appear too energetic. I

should behave according to the medicino–induced lethargy instead.

So, I reluctantly watched Felix being taken away. I silently told myself that the

child was mine. I just needed to bide my time until I could kick her out of my

home. My son would still be my son.

Under Kevin’s care, I ate quite a bit, and he watched me with a delighted

smile, never taking his eyes off my face.

“Why are you smiling?”

“Silly, I’m happy when you have an appetite!” Kevin affectionately patted my

hand on the table.

“You’re like force–feeding a goose. I think I might have overeaten a bit.” I

pretended to have a spoiled look, weakly leaning back in my chair.

This time, my weakness wasn’t an act. Prolonged medication and restless

sleep had pushed my body to its limits. I now fully understood what it meant

to be physically frail and unwell. I wasn’t even faking it. Even the effort needed

to stand would cause my heart to race, and my core had no strength.

I hadn’t taken those three doses of medication, so I could clearly feel that I

was much more alert. However, I still felt lightheaded and weak, almost to the

point of exhaustion.

“Feeling tired?” Kevin asked with concern as he looked at me.

I immediately nodded, pretending to be all limp and leaning by the side of

the table. “I’m sleepy!”

Kevin got up without hesitation and scooped me up. “I’ll take you back to the

room.”

I wrapped my arms around his neck, feeling a bit sore. I couldn’t remember

the last time he had treated me like this. My heart warmed, and I blurted out,

“Dear, when will I actually get better? I feel like I’m getting weaker and weaker.

With all these medications, there should be some positive effect by now.”

“Don’t be impatient. You’re already making progress. See, you’re able to come

downstairs!” He looked at me meaningfully.

I felt a twinge of anxiety. Somehow, his answer didn’t sit right with me. Was I

not even allowed to come downstairs anymore?

Doubts flooded my mind again, and I stayed silent as I lay against his chest

weakly.

As we left the dining room, I saw Tania feeding the baby out of the corner of

my eye. She glanced at Kevin, who was still holding me.

He carried me briskly back to the second floor and gently placed me on the

bed. I was on the verge of falling into a deep slumber.

He reached out and pulled a blanket over me. He didn’t leave; instead, he

stood by the bed, gazing at me.

Even though my eyes were closed, I could sense that intense stare.

It was strange; this scrutiny made me feel somewhat uneasy. It was devoid

of any warmth.

He held his gaze for what felt like ten seconds, and then I heard him call my

name, “Danielle!”

I didn’t move and didn’t respond, pretending to be asleep.

The next second, I felt him lean in closer, his warm breath brushing against

my face. I didn’t dare move.

My sixth sense told me that this action was definitely not innocent.

His gaze, which felt like an eternity, made me realize that any remaining

illusions I had about Kevin were completely shattered.

I heard Tania’s voice quietly asking, “Is she asleep?”

Kevin’s warm breathing ceased, and I heard their footsteps walking away.

Then, she said something that struck me like lightning. “Keep an eye on her!

Things have been a bit off lately.”

After that, I didn’t hear anything they said. I felt like I had plunged into an

abyss. Even though I was covered in a blanket, I couldn’t stop trembling.
