Chapter 57
Adrop of tears slid down Mrs. Hughes’s cheeks as the slowly scrolled through her phone while reading the news. Who would ever imagine that the daughter in law she loathed so much years ago would turn out this way? She could never have imagined that things wound turn out this way, of course,
Waves of regret spumed through her all over again and she could only wish she never made this mistake in the first place.
“i puess you saw the news already, Mom,” She raised her gaze from the phone and looked in the direction where the voice came from, and there was Lisa, standing there with her hands crossed on her chest.
Lisa..” Mrs. Hughes failed to hide her smile as she dropped the phone and managed to stand up to her feet, but slumped back on the bed as they were too weak to carry her up
“You came to see me?” Tears poured down her cheeks as she stared at Lisa with excitement all over her.
“No,” Slowly, her smile faded as Lisa’s reply left a dagger in her heart. She thought her daughter must’ve been worried that she won’t be fine after she read the news which was why she came around, but it turned out she had expected much. Lisa really hated her so much now.
“How do you feel about it, Mom? Or should I ask what you feel, rather? Guilt, regret, or…” She paused as she slowly walked over to the chair beside the bed and sat on it.
“What do you really feel?” Secing the tears in the eyes of the woman who had been nothing but loving to her ever since she was born broke her heart into shreds. It really hurt trying to hold herself together when she could barely do it, but for the sake of what is right, setting her feelings aside was really important in this situation. It didn’t matter whether this woman was her Mom or not, what mattered is the fact that what she did was wrong.
“Lisa Please don’t hate me,” She slowly shook her head as tears found their way down her cheeks.
I guess your Dad heard what happened… He has not come here to see me ever since I woke up.. Xander said he won’t be coming here. I was happy when i saw you—”
“is that what you are worried about, Mom? Are you worried about losing your family? What about Summer? She had no family, Mom…. She had no one. You could’ve been her Mom, you know? We could’ve been the family she never had,” Tears poured down Lisa’s cheeks as she looked at her Mom bitterly.
“She would we still gotten to this position she is today if you had helped her. We had the means to… We had everything to help her, but you chose to ruin her life instead. Tell me, do you think you deserve anyone around you, Mom?” She paused and bit her lip.
“She stayed all by herself, gave birth all alone. I’m sure you know the pain a woman pass through in that labour room, don’t you? It’s between life and death, Mom. You’ve been there before and it’s not even once. Imagine if Dad weren’t there for you when you had Xander and when you had me. How would you have feel?”
“If only you weren’t selfish, Mom… If only you were nice enough, she would’ve been a part of our family. I pleaded with you, Mom… I went on my knees and begged you to please treat her right before I left, I told you that I was the only one she had before she got married to my brother, and after the mariage, we were going to be her family. You disappointed me, Mon,” Lisa burst into tears as she buried her face between her palms.
“I’m sorry, Lisa… I know I don’t deserve to be forgiven, but please don’t do this…” Her hand trembled as she placed them on Lisa’s shoulders.
“I will find her, tisa… I will find Summer and make things right. I will make sure to gain her forgiveness, I promise,” She whimpered like her life depended on it, but Lisa only scoffed as she raised hur gaze to her.
“Why? Because you think she is someone worthy of your son now? Would you have agreed to find her if she was still that poor girl you knew then? Would you have agreed to beg for her forgiveness if Was still the same Summer you used to know?” Lisa scoffed and shrugged her hands off her shoulders

Chapter 57
Ms Hughes face dropped disappointedly as she slowly shook her head. She really wanted to make things right this time, but will any of her family. believe her?
“It’s not that, Lisa. I promise you, it’s not that,” She shook her head, but even with the sincerity in her eyes, Lisa could not bring herself to trust this
woman for any reason.
74%
“Tell me what will happen if you ask for her forgiveness? What do you think will happen? She will open her arms wide and accept my brother back like nothing ever happened?” Lisa paused and scoffed
“Come on, Mom. Will you allow me to go back to such family if I was in her shoes? A family that did everything to ruin me… Would you still allow me to go
back there?”
Mrs Hughes was left speechless. Deep inside her, she knew this was never going to work again, but she was hoping to try her best. She was going to at least try to make things right, she was going to show her sincerity and go on her knees if need be. She was a mother who regretted all her actions, a mother who could not sit back and watch her family fall apart because of the mistake she made even though things might never work out.
“You know… Summer was supposed to have performed surgery on you since one year now, right?”
Mrs Hughes face went pale with shock.
“Of course, you didn’t know about that. Even I would’ve refused too if I was in her shoes. I mean, I have no reason to save the life of someone who could eat my flesh without even cooking it if she had a chance to, right?” Lisa paused then leaned forward and smiled. “I’m sure you wouldn’t do the same for someone like that also, right, Mom?”
“Lisa”
“I’m sorry, Mom. I don’t know how to hold myself back, so I might do something to hurt you really bad later. I am a woman of justice, and I hope you’ll understand that,” Lisa paused then stood up and adjusted her cloth.
“I hope you get
better soon,” Lisa tried to hold back her tears as she finally turned to leave when Mrs Hughes spoke up.
“Summer… Can you help me meet her? I really need to see her, please,” Mrs Hughes prayed silently that her daughter would at least do this favor for her even though it didn’t look like she would. She was hoping so though.
“Why?” Lisa scoffed then turned to her and continued. “You want to beg her to save your life since she’s the only surgeon who can do it?” Lisa raised her
eyebrows.
“Are you doing this for your son, your guilt, or for yourself?” Lisa further inquired, but only got a silent stare.
“I guess that answered my question. Excuse me,” And with that, Lisa finally walked out of the ward without sparing the poor woman another glance…
