Lethal Confessions

Chapter Sixteen

Cassandra remained on the ground her eyes shut as if in meditation, hands balled into fists. There was a loud thumping in her head and she felt her body becoming numb, limb by limb, each one giving off a pricking sensation before. Something was building up in her, a hunger and thirst for blood, for death and she had no control over it.

Sophia sat still, scared that any slight movement she made would cause Cassandra to pounce on her. Then she realised that Cassandra was trying to fight off the 'thing' that was trying to possess her body; she wasn't going to wait to see who won and quietly got on her feet.

At that exact moment Cassandra's eyes flew open and Sophia knew the main door was a no-go. As fast as her legs could carry her she run down the hallway, Cassandra on her heels. She turned right and was about to run up the stairs when Cassandra's hand caught hold of her collar and she was pulled backwards. She collapsed on Cassandra who stumbled backwards and crashed into the basement door. It burst open and they both tumbled down the stairs.

Cassandra, now with inhuman reflexes, was up in an instant and began to circle Sophia like a lion to it's prey.

Sophia in trying to stand up, seized a hand trowel from on of the scattered boxes and attempted to hit Cassandra. Cassandra slapped her hand away and took the arm bound in a cloth - the one she had used in smashing in the mirror - and twisted it. She yelped in anguish, then Cassandra head-butted her and kicked her feet from under her. Sophia fell to the ground with a thud. Her head began to swim and she watched Cassandra through a vision blurred with tears. Her evil grimace unnerved her.

Sophia's fear exuded her and fed into Cassandra's ego.

A baseball bat stuck out from one of the fallen boxes and Cassandra picked it up. She weighed it in her hands for a while and before Sophia could react the bat came down on her back with a force so strong she felt a bone crack and the affliction travel all the way to her brain.

"All this is your fault. You are to blame for all this."

She writhed in agony as Cassandra tortured her by repeatedly batting her. She tried to crawl away but Cassandra dragged her back.

"If only you had left Philip and John alone, if only you hadn't suggested this darn trip in the first place, none of this would be happening."

"I'm sorry-"

"Sorry, you think sorry is going to bring them back? "

"Please." Sophia pleaded. "Don't do this. Don't let that thing control you, this is not who you are."

Cassandra chuckled mirthlessly. "How do you know that this is not who I am?"

"That thing was in me before remember?" Sophia challenged, struggling to pull her hurting self into a sitting position. "I know exactly how you're feeling, that the only thing that can make up for all this is death, my death. Don't believe whatever that is running through your mind now, it's toying with you, your emotions. I assure you, if you allow it to do what it wants, you're going to regret whatever that comes after. I know what I'm saying. Trust me." Sophia's voice became soft. "You have to fight it."

Cassandra's demeanor faltered for a moment and her eyes appeared to revert to their original colour but that was over as soon as it had began. "Yeah, right. You don't know anything. You know nothing about me or how I'm feeling. "

"Fine. You're right, I know nothing about you, but this I know; you aren't a murderer."

"Don't be so sure." And with that she smashed the bat against Sophia's head.

Sophia shrieked and fell backwards. She had never felt this much pain in her life. She was weak and bruised, her face hurt and her clothes were covered in her blood. But she did not want to die, and even if she was destined to, then she wasn't going down without a fight.

Cassandra turned her back to her for a second and Sophia snatched an iron rod that was lying around. She gathering the little strength she had left and stood to her feet. Then she rushed to Cassandra aiming for her torso.

Cassandra heard some noise behind her and turned just in time to see Sophia rushing at her. She grabbed the rod at the last minute and held onto it before it could do her some damage.

They struggled for the stronger hold and finally, she impaled her
