Chapter 28
Nowadays, students were capable of anything. Girls becoming mistresses of the rich had become commonplace in the city.
Hearing this, Scarlet shook her head immediately and said, "No, it's not what you think. Mr. Foster appreciated Mr. Smith's work very much, so he wanted Mr. Smith to design clothes for him."
"That makes sense. Mr. Foster appears to be very cold and unapproachable. What's more, a rich man like him can get any woman he wants without striking a deal with them."
"Speaking of Mr. Foster, have you guys heard the latest gossip? He is in love with a beautiful but sick lady."
"Tell us, Scarlet! Is Mr. Foster handsome? Is he more handsome in person than on TV?"
Scarlet's female colleagues were so excited that they began to discuss Lenny.
Gnashing her teeth together, Evie got even angrier. She was determined to find a way to get rid of Scarlet.
One of them had to leave the studio, either her or Scarlet.
In the evening, Scarlet went home to her rental apartment and rolled around in bed happily. The money she just got was a life-saving straw. Because of it, she could live a comfortable life for the rest of the year
If she saved more money, she should be able to hold on until her baby arrived.
But she still needed to work hard. Raising a child would cost a lot of money.
And she wanted to give her child nothing but the best.
While she was thinking about her and her baby's happy future, her phone rang. It was a call from one of the servants at Lenny's villa.
The servant tidied up Scarlet's old room and found a pocket watch with a photo of Scarlet's mother and grandfather. In the photo, Scarlet's mother was holding young Scarlet in her arms.
Scarlet had always kept that pocket watch close to her. She thought that she had brought it with her when she moved out. As it turned out, she left it in the villa.
"When are you free, Miss Brown? Can you come and get your pocket watch? I would love to deliver it to you myself, but I can't leave the villa without asking for permission."
Scarlet understood what the servant was talking about. They stayed in the villa twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week unless they asked for a leave.
"When is Lenny not at home? I'll come and get the pocket watch then."
"Mr. Foster is not at home tomorrow night. I think he has a business meeting."
Scarlet made an appointment and planned to get her pocket watch at eight o'clock tomorrow night.
The next night, she came to the villa.
The servant rushed out to give her the pocket watch. She looked at Scarlet with tearful eyes.
"Why are you crying?"
"We miss you, Miss Brown."
There were also other servants coming out. Scarlet was familiar with all of them as she lived in the villa for a year.
She didn't want to cry, but she didn't expect that all of the servants would come out and greet her. She swallowed the lump in her throat.
She had treated them with kindness and sincerity, so they also returned the same to her.
"All right, all right. Focus on your work here, okay? Lenny's living in the villa now. Avoid making mistakes, and be useful."
In the past, when she was living alone in the villa, she was very casual and didn't impose so many rules on the household staff.
"Are you really not coming back, Miss Brown? Mr. Foster's new girlfriend isn't good at all. She can't compare to you."
"Yes, Miss Brown. Can't you get back with Mr. Foster? He will be the luckiest man in the world if he has you by his side."
"Guys, don't say that. Be good to your new hostess. I have to go now. Thank you."
Scarlet clutched the watch tightly, looked at her former staff with reluctance, and then turned around and left.
She didn't dare to look back, fearing that she would burst into tears.
She kept walking until the villa was completely out of her sight. Then, she wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes.
No cabs passed through the road where she was now, and she would have to walk for at least fifteen more minutes to reach the bus station.
At this moment, lightning sliced through the night sky and thunder shortly followed, startling Scarlet and making her tremble.
It looked like it was going to rain.
Scarlet had always hated dark, stormy nights. When she was younger, Kyra punished her by making her kneel in the yard under the rain. Lightning flashed and thunder roared all around her, and that event left her terribly traumatized.
She quickened her pace, but soon, rain started pouring. She was drenched in a matter of minutes.
Not long after, the cold began to seep through her clothes and into her bones.
