Konstantin: The Heartless Beta

Chapter 35. Kai's Mate

Lily

I look down at the two perfect beings I've birthed and feel tears running down my face. To think both of them are mine and Konstantin's... that after all this time...

Did Stefan try to fool me by saying the other was his, or did he not know? I honestly cannot say, but the witch inside says that the blonde woman wants one of them back. Before I knew they were both babies and not one and a demon spawn, I wanted to give it away. Why would I want to keep a manifestation of evil?

But things are different now, and even if my little girl has been injected with whatever Stefan put inside of her, I will still love her fiercely. We'll take on whatever comes afterwards; I'm sure Konstantin feels the same way.

However, just because my body has healed after all the abuse does not mean that my mind has. Whenever I doze off, I wake up in a cold sweat and imagine myself back on those chains with Stefan using my body. It's only the scent of Konstantin on me that brings me down, then the faces of my children.

It's going to take a while for me to get over it or work through it; I know this. But with Konstantin and hopefully the entire pack at my side, I know that I can heal my mind once more.

A knock at the door gets my attention, and when I look up, I see Kai's mate, Caterina, walk inside. When Nikolai told me about her, I couldn't believe it. But seeing the powerful Alpha with her made me believe; this dainty, timid woman tamed the man known as The Beast of New York.

Apparently, she went through a lot before Kai found her, but even more when she became his Luna. I'm sure she'll tell me about it one day, or at least I hope we can become that close.

“Hey,” she says, walking towards me with a slight smile on her face. “How are they? How are you?”

I return her smile and look at the sleeping babies. “I've healed, so I'm okay; as for them, they're fast asleep after their first feed,” I say, then look up at her, noticing the tears well up in her eyes. “Oh! I'm s0-"

“No, please don't let what happened to me rob you of this little bit of happiness. I trust Kai will get our child back; I'm just feeling... bereft, you know?” She says, then looks down at them. “They're perfect; the new generation of Volkov Wolves have all been born.”

I patted the bed and gestured for her to sit down, and when she did, I placed my hand over her. “You know-"

"Wait!-" She calls out and throws her head backwards, her eyes going white.

"Caterina...?" I call to her, my eyes growing wide at her reaction to me touching her, and when I take my hand away, she jumps up from the bed and doubles over, holding her stomach and dry heaving. “Are you okay?” I ask.

She looks up at me with tears in her eyes and shakes her head. “You... you went through a lot at the Serpent's hand. I can't... can't believe he did all of that to you!” She says and dry heaves again. “The things he made you do... I

My heart drops at her words; how did she know? “How...?"

Caterina blinks, and a small smile crosses her face. “I guess no one told you about my Sight?”

I shake my head. “Your Sight?”

“The Goddess blessed me with the gift...amongst other things,” she says, then sits down again. “It only happens by touch, but I can see anything from the past to the future, although it's all jumbled up. Once, it happened when I caught an unknown scent. we later discovered that it was Fenriz's scent left on his warriors and what I saw were his dead wives.”

"Oh, God. That couldn't have been pretty,” I say, remembering the one horrific scene I walked in on by accident.

She shakes her head. “No, it wasn't. Then I made the mistake of telling him the name of his mate.” Oh. Big mistake, especially with how Fenriz's beast obsesses over mates.

Letting out a sigh, she looks up at me. “I have faith that my child will return to me, so please do not stop gushing over your own miracles on account of me. They're perfect,” she says, then lifts her hand to stroke my daughter's cheek.

“Cat?

She pulls away and gives me a tight smile. “I still forget about it myself,” she says and chuckles. “But what I saw is nothing to worry about; Kaia will have a beautiful life alongside my Kira.”

Her eyes widen, and her hand flies to her mouth. “Kira...I have a little girl,” she says and leans forward, her body shaking with quiet sobs. “I vaguely remember referring to my child as “she’ during a vision, but I didn't know for certain... before Dimitri ripped her from my arms...I"

"Oh, Caterina...” I say, dying to embrace her but knowing I would set off unpleasant images for her if she had to touch me. She looks so happy but completely sad at the same time as she must be recalling the vision in her head.

So I named her Kaia... after our Alpha? If that's the case, does that mean we will get Caterina’s child back and have a happy ending? Wait, I can’t put my hopes on this... the future isn't set in stone.

But looking down at my daughter, I realise that the name has already stuck with me.

Caterina looks up and wipes her tears away. “I should let you rest,” she says and stands up. “Welcome home, Lily. I'm sure we'll grow to be good friends.” Then she turns around and walks out, closing the door behind her.

Something tells me Caterina saw something else when she touched me because there was apprehension in her scent when she walked in here. But ever since I touched her hand, she seemed to be more at ease around me.

Well, I can only hope that it's a good thing. After everything all of us have been through, the least we deserve is a happy ending.
