Chapter 9
“You are making me bait?” She growled, completely forgetting the fact that Xavier knew they were mates. Xavier shrugged and pushed her away from him.
“Go and do an excellent job.” He smirked as Katana crouched her way around a bush. “Remember, toilet duties.”
She was feeling grumpy as she sat a ways away from her group and still had a clear view of her mate. Xavier glanced behind him and gave her an impatient look. She didn’t know what to do. Her mind was drawing a blank as she stared at her mate. However, her mind went into overdrive when she saw Kieran moving towards her group, she panicked.
She stood up immediately from the bush that she was hiding behind. His eyes flew to her. She looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Her eyes were as wide as flying saucers and she was gnawing at her bottom lip, like she was a beaver eating a good piece of wood.
“Hi.” She squeaked before bursting into a run.
She heard her mate growl and chase after her. She yelped and ran like the forest was on fire and it was hot on her butt. She ran like she was being chased by a big bad wolf, who wanted very much to eat her alive. When she heard the sound of clothes ripping, she knew he had shifted.
“Oh no!” She shouted as she pivoted and changed directions. She could shift, but if she shifted he would know she is a woman. She would have no clothes to wear. If he catches her, he can command her.
Sharp growls and snarling were coming closer. Her mate was bent on chasing what was his and she was bent on running away from what was hers! She wasn’t going to let him win.
“Toilet duties.” She muttered under her breath and picked up speed. She refuses to do toilet duties. She refuses to be looked down at, as an incompetent person.
She saw a big tree and climbed it as fast as she could. When she reached the very top, she stopped. Breathing heavy, she looked down at her mate, who had shifted and was now wearing only shorts. He looked up at her with his amber gold eyes.
“Come down, Kenneth.” He ordered.
Katana shook her head.
His eyebrows furrowed. “You think I can’t climb?”
She watched as her mate began making his way up the tree. When he was just within reach of her, she jumped and went flying to the ground, landing perfectly on her hands and knees. She just needed to distract him long enough, so that her team can make it back safely with her teammates.
She heard him growl in anger. She knew he would be falling down shortly after her. She burst into a run and ran towards a river, but was surprised when her feet weren’t moving. She glanced down in panic and realized she had stepped into quicksand. Her eyes widened as she scrambled to get out of it, but the more she moved, the quicker she sunk.
When most of her body was quickly immersed in the sand, she felt her panic mode increase tenfold. She did the only thing she didn’t think she would do. She called out to her mate.
“Kieran!” She shouted.
Kieran appeared in front of her, shortly after her calling his name a couple of times. Her neck and shoulders were fully submerged. His eyes widened when he saw her predicament.
“I need help.” She gave him a half smile.
“It doesn’t surprise me to see you in this situation.” He muttered as he disappeared from her view. She felt the quicksand pulling her deeper.
Kieran brought back a sturdy stick and he stuck it into the sand for her to grab onto. She found it poking her belly and wrapped her hands around it.
“I got it.” She said. It didn’t take long for him to pull her out. His wolf strength was enough to pluck her up easily.
She fell onto the ground and breathed a sigh of relief. Falling back onto her back, she closed her eyes and tried to calm her erratic heartbeat. She bathed in the sun rays that were poking through the trees, until she felt a shadow fall over her face.
“You have a funny way of baiting.” He said huskily. Her eyes flew open and she pushed against his chest. He was hovering over her. She fell back onto her butt and a slow smirk crawled on his face.
She scrambled to her feet. The siren went off, concluding the game. She backed up a little as he stood up and followed her.
“You played me.” He said lowly, but there was no anger in his voice.
“I had to.” She reasoned.
“You deserve to be punished.” He stated and her eyes widened.
“No toilet duty!” She hastily commented. “I mean - I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“You used our bond against me. You are a distraction.”
He was walking toward her and she was feeling like a cornered animal. When she saw him attempt to grab for her, she yelped and ran back towards camp like a lightning bolt. She wasn’t going to allow him to get anywhere near her again. This was the last time. She had to focus on the task at hand and a mate can’t interfere.
She appeared back into camp to see Xavier, Thomas, and Isaac successfully rescuing their teammates. People were laughing all around. She glanced behind her to see that Kieran was gone. Troy walked up to her.
“Where were you? And why are you all covered in sand?” Troy asked.
“We won!” Isaac cheered as he came over and gave Katana a pat on the back.
“With the amazing help of Kenneth here. My team will not be assigned toilet duties.” Xavier said brightly.
Katana was irritated. Xavier had used her as bait. She could be so much more. She could have helped them, but instead she spent her time running from her mate.
As if on cue, her mate appears from the corner of her eyes. Xavier laughed and began gloating, which in turn only infuriated Kieran even more. He walked up to Katana and grabbed her elbow.
“Since Kenneth played such a big part in the success of the red team. He will be rewarded.” Kieran gave a wicked grin. She literally gulped as she waited for what he had to say next.
“Kenneth, you will be assigned to clean my bedroom, my office, and attend to my daily needs.” He announced. Many people snickered and Katana glared at both Xavier and Kieran. The two idiots who seemed to have grown another head and were bent on making her life hell here.
“I don’t think I am the right-” Katana started.
“Oh, but you are. You definitely are.” Kieran whispered in her ear.
“We should assign him toilet duties too.” Lewis snickered. Kieran looked up with a very fierce glare.
“Since you so willingly brought up that idea, I think it’s best if you do it, Lewis.” Kieran growled at him. Lewis took a step back.
“But-”
“Yes?” Kieran arched an eyebrow dangerously.
“No-nothing.” Lewis mumbled.
Katana felt slightly happier now that Lewis was assigned toilet duties -- that was until her mate dragged her toward his building. Her heels made drag marks on the ground. She was hoping to avoid him, but how can she now when her mate ordered her by his side?
