Just a Wolf

I obviously can’t leave it here. I plan for the story to continue in the next book, Just a Rogue.

I have to say, when I started this story I had no idea what was going to happen. I’ve been writing a completely unrelated series, Guardians, a sort of fantasy/historical fiction/romance about a new and different take on guardian angels. I love Guardians, I’m obsessed with it, I am literally in love with my main character Gregor. But it just doesn’t seem to be a terribly popular genre on FindNovel.net.

So, I figured I would jump on the werewolf bandwagon. Everyone here loves werewolves, right? I’ve read a handful of werewolf stories, and figured I’d just go with the established trope: territorial werewolf packs, living in a packhouse, led by an Alpha and Luna, fated mates, the whole thing. But I wanted to turn it on its head a little, and show the whole thing from the point of view of underlings.

You know, the people who actually get stuff done. The people who keep the machinery running smoothly. The people who do most of the work and get very little of the credit. The humble people, the brilliant people who help prop up the leaders.

Just a wolf.

So I deliberately never have a POV chapter from an Alpha or Luna. This isn’t their story. It’s the story of my plain little folks who are self-deprecating and obedient and supportive. I got a couple of complaints about that - at least one reader seemed to think that it was boring to have the story centered on people who don’t really see their own worth.

But that was the whole point. Ordinary people are what make the world go round. Their lives, their loves, their skills, their passion, are the true strength in any group.

Amelia and Dom might not realize it yet, but they are brilliant and strong wolves, just because of how decent and bonded and diligent they are.

I’m going to start writing the next book shortly. I realized about halfway through this one that there was no way this could be finished in one book. I had these basic ideas, but the plot unfolded on its own, as happens with most of my books. What was meant to be a short little frolic has ended up being a long involved tale that I’m very invested in.
