Jax's X Game The Axelridge Series Book 2

Chapter 30

(Chapter Song ‘4 minutes’ by Madonna)

JAX

“So here’s where we stand.”

Cy goes over the standings with me as the team warms up on the field.

We're getting our asses kicked. With the last game on the table, I need to pull a goddamn miracle to win this.

I would never regret saving Audrey from herself, but shit, my lack of presence at this tournament was not what I wanted.

“We have three out for injuries and our back ups got called back to the league to prepare for the playoffs.” He looks at me and crosses his arms. “My advice? Forfeit.”

“What? No. Cy, we can’t forfeit!” I scowl.

He shrugs. “What else can we do?”

“Yes, what else, Jaxton?”

I turn and smile. “Rey.”

I walk over to her and give a quick kiss. “What are you doing here? I thought you were working?” I look her over in her sport gear. “You’re playing?”

“I heard the Lumber Jax were struggling and I came to help.” She tilts her head and smiles.

I drop my head and shake it. “Rey…”

“Jax…” Cy warns.

I contemplate and raise my head. “You really want to play.”

“Yes. I do. It’s all I ever wanted.” She slides up to my chest. “To be under the leadership of a big…strong…handsome…Alpha…” She says seductively as stares into my eyes and plays with my jersey.

I grab her hands and chuckle. “Ok. You don’t need to fuck with me.”

“I am not. I mean it.” She insists.

I lean to her lips. “I don’t believe that for a second, Queen.”

She laughs, wraps her arms around my neck and kisses me.

I break the kiss and pull back. “Ok.”

Her wyes widen and her brows stitch up. “Yes?”

“Yes.”

“You’re serious? I can play on the Lumber Jax?” She grabs my arms with a toothy grin.

“Yes, Rey.” I laugh.

“YES! Thank you!” She jumps up and hugs me tight. She kisses my cheek over and over. Fuck…what? Since when is she this grateful?

I laugh more as she smothers me. “Ok! YOU'RE WELCOME!”

She pushes back. “You will not regrets this. I promise.” She points at me as she backs up. “I have to tell Red! I’ll…see you on the field!” She turns and jogs to the elevators.

I chuckle, sigh and shake my head as I turn back to Cy.

“Wow.” He says with sarcastic surprise.

“Shut up.” I point at him.

“A woman. On the Lumber Jax. I never expected that.” He smirks.

“She good. I can’t deny her talent. Maybe I was…a little hard on her." I shrug.

He looks at me with a blank face.

I scowl. “What?”

He stares at me. “You admitted you were wrong…That must of really hurt.”

“Seriously…I’ll clock you.” I point at him.

“No, really…You’re bleeding inside, aren’t you?” He says with snark.

“Enough.” I warn.

“The feminist broke you. The Great Alpha Dupree. Whipped by a girl.” He snickers.

“CY…” I growl and take a step.

He pushes off the desk he’s leaning on. He starts to walk backwards with a shit eating grin on his face. “So, what color dress are you wearing to the ball?”

“THAT’S IT!” I break into a run and he takes off to the field, cackling the whole way. “GET YOUR ASS BACK HERE, BETA!!” I yell as we hit the field. I catch up and tackle him into the grass.

****

The ball is snapped up by Gerard and he runs up the middle of the field. The Rocks are hot on our ass.

“OPEN!” I yell.

He whips the ball to me before he’s checked.

I catch it and run. The Middies surround me and I fight to get out. Breaking free, I run and cross into the attack zone. Defenders didn’t waste any time. They hit my pole and the ball flies up out of my pocket.

I watch it, free my pole and lunge under it. I catch it again, roll and get to my feet.

I deke around another defender, line up for a shot and before I can take it, I'm body checked into the grass. The ball rolls loose and the Rock’s scoop it.

The passes fly and the ball is already down field as I lay on my back.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”

I turn my head to see Audrey run to me.

“These guys are brutal.” I groan as she drops to her knees and leans over me.

“No.” She shakes her head and points at my chest. “You’re heads not in the game.”

“My heads in the game!” I scowl.

She grabs my chest pad. “Not from where I stand. Now, you either win this tournament or I don’t show you what I bought at Sensational.” She bounces her brow.

My brows raise and my mouth shrinks. I swallow. “Sensational? The hottest lingerie shop in Axelridge?” A wave of heat flushed through me and my dick turns to a semi real quick.

“The very same, Alpha.” She tilts her helmet to me.

I, immediately, push her off and jump to my feet.

I lean to her. “Pass me the damn ball.” I point to her as I walk away with a hop in my step. “It better be black and lacy.” I release a hungry growl and run for the ball.

With two minutes left in the game, I clear my head.

Audrey’s right. My heads not in the game because all I can think about is the moon. I feel it, but I don’t know if she does. She says she does, but I kind of sense that she doubts it.

I totally know why. She either thinks she doesn’t deserve a second chance after Vinnie or that she won’t get one. That’s why I need to make this extra special for her. I want to show her that my mate is the most precious thing on this planet and that role will be filled by her. So my heads been filled with the Blue Moon and I’m letting the Rocks run right over me because of it.

Come on, Dupree. Win this thing.

Audrey checks a middie, snatches the ball and soft passes to Gerard. They run toward me as I cross the center line.

“HERE!” I raise my pole.

Gerard passes back to Audrey who then fires it to me. I spin and run back up the field. As I run, Audrey blows past me. I pass it to her and dig in my cleats. My legs burn as I sprint to the attacking zone. The defenders move in and she passes to Gerard who’s in the X box behind the net. He passes it to me and I slam my back to the defenders.

I keep my pole up and try to push my way around to see the goal.

“HERE!” Audrey’s open so I pass. The door slams shut in front of her and she tries to dodge. She trips, but passes the ball back to me before she hit the ground.

I waste no time. I run for it, jump and as soon as the ball hit my cradle, I swung that bastard hard at the goal.

It screams through the air and the goalie dives. He misses and the ball hits the back of net.

Sirens sound and the crowd goes insane.

I land on my stomach and slam my helmet into the grass.

“LUMBER JAX WIN! LUMBER JAX WIN!”

I get to my knees and I’m tackled on to my back.

“HEY!” I laugh.

She rips my helmet off and I see her ear to ear smile. “I knew you could do it, Dupree.”

I smile. “Couldn’t have done it without you, Oakland.”

I grab her head and smash my lips on hers. The stadium is shaking with excitement from the fans, but I barely notice. Audrey’s lips drown it all away and all I hear is the thumping of our hearts.

I slowly break the kiss and pull her head back. “You know what I want to do?” I mumble on her lips.

“I think I have an idea.” She smiles.

“I want to go for a run.” I smirk.

She juts her head back. “Oh…well that’s way better than what I was thinking.”

I laugh and pull her lips back to mine.

“So…I was thinking…we should…color coordinate. Yellow and black…for the team.” I run and jump a wall. I grip my shoes on it and climb up to the top.

“I don’t like yellow.” Audrey runs, jumps and grabs my hand. I pull her up and we both run.

“It’s the team colors.” I jump a garbage can and hop to a bench. She follows.

I walk across the back and jump down. She jumps and rolls in the air, landing on the ground in front of me. “Nice!” I clap her arm.

“Thanks. I’m a winter, by the way.” She places her hands on her hips and blows a lock out her face.

I scrunch my brow. “What the hell does that mean?”

She pushes past me and runs. I break into a run and catch up. “It means…” She turns and jumps a full flight of stairs. I jump up on the railing, walk down it and do a back flip off it.

I join her again. “My skin tone is compliments by soft cool colors like blues and pinks. Yellow is not complimentary.”

“You can’t go to the ball without the colors. The tournament awards are being handed out.” I stop and throws my hands on my hips as I try and catch my breath.

“Who says I have to wear the colors?” She crosses her arms.

“Well…” I wipe the sweat of my face. “I do.”

She chews her cheek and her eyes get that look. My jaw falls and I can see it coming. I feel the empowerment brewing and I brace myself. “Look. It’s just for the night. I just want it to be special.”

Her eyes narrow as I step closer. “Special.”

“Yeah.” I smile.

“So, this isn’t you trying to control me and dictating what I can and cannot wear?” She motions a finger at me and stands with her attitude. “Because I’ve been dressing myself for years without a man telling me how.”

“What? Rey…” I stop and shoot her a confused look. “No! All I’m doing is…”

A smile grows on her lips and she starts snickering.

I bite my cheek and shake my head. I nod. “Come here.” I crook a finger at her.

She shakes her head. “Nope.” She grins and backs up.

“You fucked with me. Come here.”

“Nope!!” She spins around and runs down the street.

“No, you don’t!!” I run after her, grab her by the waist and lift her up. She screams and laughs as I spin us around. I drop her and tickle her sides. She laughs hysterically until I spin her around and bruise her lips as people walk around us.
