Chapter Chapter Twenty Two
When Eve planned the party, she hadn't taken her emotional state into consideration. Ellie had always been fascinated with human ways, so her maid of honor had rented out the backroom of The Cube. The Luna was careful to warn her friend to wear warm clothes to the ice bar in Calgary.
Eve walked into the cool, dark room and checked over the decorations. There were small silver and navy balloons floating in the corners. Several tables with alcohol in glasses so cold, they could well have been made of ice as well.
She could feel her pack members approaching from the parking lot. Ellie was excited and nervous at the same time. Eve checked over her outfit once more before they arrived. Her black sweater-dress hung off her shoulders comfortably. Her tall boots protected her calves from the cool air.
Eve was trying not to be self conscious. She wasn't used to going out without Flint anymore and she didn't want her pregnancy to show before they could announce it. She had to stop overthinking a moment later, when Ellie entered the room with a group of familiar she-wolves.
"Here comes the bride!" Eve stepped to her and wrapped her in an affectionate hug.
"Evie!" Ellie gripped her tightly.
"Let me in on that!" Faye wrapped them both in her arms.
Two of the young women from Ellie's training year accompanied them. Eve knew them both, just not very well. The tall one with the raven hair and dark eyes was Lana. The shorter, curvier girl with blue eyes and a wide smile was Chelsea. They waved in greeting as Eve gestured around the room.
"How do you like the place?" The Luna probed.
"I passed some humans on our way in! They're all so bundled up!" Lana stated excitedly.
"I know. Apparently their body temperature is really low." Eve explained.
"It's so cool!" Ellie jumped u an down excitedly.
The group began to inspect the drinks, glasses, and tables. Eve watched a young woman poke her head into the room and glance around. She was a wolf, a StarLight warrior to be precise.
"Flint sent you an escort, huh?" Faye spoke from behind her.
"What?" Eve turned to face her.
"It's okay. Jay made me bring Danielle with me. She's at the bar." She gestured to the other room.
"There are StarLight warriors floating around. this place is one of our subsidiaries." She replied. "But yeah... He has like five people assigned to this right now."
"Alphas... What are you going to do, right?" Faye laughed.
"Right." Eve smiled.
"Where is the music?" Chelsea's voice floated through the air.
The Luna walked over to a table and picked up a tablet. With the move of her finger the speakers came to life. Ellie's favorite song began to play over the speakers; "Feel Good" by Gryffin and Illenium.
"Oh. My. Goddess!" Ellie squealed.
Eve grinned and turned up the volume. The young woman began dancing and pouring drinks. Faye grabbed the Luna's wrist and pulled her into the group. They were jumping and dancing to the rhythm until the song faded.
A poppy dance beat followed and Ellie turned to her, handing her a shot of vodka. Eve took it and stared at it with furrowed brows. Everyone lifted their glasses and held them together.
"To Eve. You're not just my Luna, you're my best friend. Thank you for the party, but more than that... Thank you for everything." Ellie met her eyes with tears on her lashes. "So, to Eve!"
"To Eve!" Everyone clinked their shot glasses together and drank them.
Faye stealthily took the alcohol from Eve and dank it, handing her the empty glass. The Luna stepped forward and refilled the glasses.
"And you haven't even opened your presents yet. Or seen the hotel room." Eve's statement produced some chuckles.
"Here's to the bride." She lifted her glass and the others followed suite. "Ellie, from a pup too smart for her own good to a woman, mate, and wife... Being by your side as you grew, and getting to grow up with you, has meant more to me than the fullest of moons."
She found herself struggling to hold back her own nostalgic, loving tears.
"To Ellie, the best, wildest, most loyal fried anyone could ask for. Let's all wish Austin luck."
"To Ellie!" The girls laughed, again clinking their drinks together.
Once again, Eve handed Faye her full shot and took her sister in law's empty one.
"Excuse me." A small voice cut through the conversation.
"Hi." Eve greeted the small waitress standing behind them.
"Hi. My name's Yolonda. If you need anything tonight, just wave me over." She smiled.
"Okay. Thanks." Faye nodded politely.
Her phone rang in her pocket. Eve stepped away from the group to answer it, leaving Faye with the human girl.
"Hello?" She plugged her free ear to block out some of the music.
"Luna." Flint's teasing tone replied to her.
"Oh, hi." Eve smiled at him.
"How's it going?" He probed.
"Good. I'm guessing you already know that since I've seen three different warriors peek in here." She couldn't help but smile at his protectiveness.
"I know you're safe." Flint chuckled. "I was asking how the party was going."
"Oh, well in that case..." Eve sighed jokingly. "It's going well. Ellie seems to be having a ball. Jay may be mad at me tomorrow though."
"Why?" He probed.
"His mate is drinking her shots and mine tonight. That's one hell of a hangover coming her way." She answered.
"Right." Flint paused before asking, "Why haven't you told Ellie about the pup yet?"
"It's her bridal party. I don't want to steal her thunder. I'm going to tell her after this." Eve explained.
"Of course. It's so simple." He chuckled.
"Shut up." She giggled at him.
"For now, baby. Go enjoy your party. Call me when you get to the hotel." Flint laughed again.
"Okay. I love you." Eve smiled.
"I love you too." He replied before hanging up the phone.
Chelsea approached her and tapped on Eve's shoulder.
"When should we do the presents?" She whispered.
"Whenever." She shrugged. "How about now?"
The young woman nodded. Eve smiled and waved her hands in the air, drawing all eyes to her.
"Present time ladies! Pick a seat because I will not have blurs in all my pictures!" The Luna announced happily.
As everyone gathered the things they had brought and began to get seated, Eve felt lightheaded. She leaned on the doorframe for a moment and focused on her breathing.
Not now... She thought to herself.
Eat something. Flint would say eat something. The she-wolf answered.
Eve waved at Yolanda in the next room. The human quickly walked up to her.
"Hi. What can I do for you?" She smiled though her eyes showed concern.
"The catering that I have arranged, could you have them bring it now." Eve asked.
"This early?" Yolonda furrowed her eyebrows.
"The alcohol." She gestured behind her. "We need to put something on our stomachs sooner than I thought."
"Of course." She nodded and wandered away.
Eve took a few deep breaths. Even in the cool air, she felt hot. Her breath was fogging into a mist and she felt dizzy. A moment later, Faye touched her back lightly.
"Are you okay?" She probed.
"Yeah. I just forgot to eat earlier." Eve lied awkwardly.
"Okay. I saw you talk to the human so I take it you sent for the food?" Faye asked.
"Yeah." She nodded.
"Well, come take a seat. When they bring it, I'll make you a plate." She offered.
"I'm kind of... Craving meat right now." Eve whispered as she sat on the dark, furry sofa.
"Got it." Faye nodded.
Yolanda led a few servers into the room. They laid out the food on the tables in the back before leaving again. Faye thanked them before making Eve a plate of food. She handed the lightheaded Luna enough bacon wrapped shrimp to feed a small village.
"Thank you." Eve smiled at the absurd amount.
"No big deal." Faye plopped beside her on the sofa.
Another upbeat song came over the speakers. After cleaning her plate, the Luna felt less dizzy. She wasn't sure if it was the food or the time passing but either way, she was grateful the growing Alpha power had gone back to rest.
