Chapter Chapter Thirty
As Duncan parked beside a gas pump in Summerville, his passenger caught his eye. Eve was stroking her sternum with a tight expression.
"What's wrong?" He probed, noting her stress through the mindlink.
"Nothing. My chest- I think Flint's upset." She answered.
"He's dealing with the other Alphas. It's upsetting. I'll be back." Duncan nodded before he climbed out of the car.
Eve fiddled with the GPS and pulled up the directions. They were already on Locke Road. It said the diner was right up the block. Eve opened her door and stepped out of the car.
"What are you doing?" Duncan asked curiously.
"Stretching my legs. Also, I think maybe we should leave the car here." She stated.
"We are basically there." He sighed and hung up the pump.
"So, go park." Eve waved him off.
Duncan nodded and moved the Jeep to a proper place. The Luna waited on the sidewalk until he approached.
"You can't come in with me." She pointed out as the large, green Fire Fly sign came into view.
"I will be on the other side of the street. Watching. One thought and I'll be there." Duncan nodded.
"I don't think I'll be able to talk her into coming back to StarLight with us." Eve admitted.
"I know. Observe. Don't interfere." He paused before they reached the parking lot.
"Okay. See you in a few." She turned to leave.
"Wait." Duncan sighed and rubbed the back of his head.
"Everything alright?" Eve asked.
"Here." He handed her a pocket knife from his jacket pocket. "We're in the valley. Do not turn under any circumstances. If it's a trap, use this."
"Okay." She nodded and clipped the weapon to her belt.
Eve headed toward the diner and took a few breaths. She looked through the large, storefront windows as she approached the door. In the corner were two teenagers having what seemed to be the world's most awkward date.
At the other end of the restaurant was an old woman drinking coffee from a mug with both hands. The other tables were empty. Eve entered and examined the place.
The floor was a vintage black and white checkered pattern. The tables were simple and red with booths surrounding them. The narrow counter had a few stools but no one occupied any of them. Eve chose a seat facing the door, sliding onto the dark vinyl.
"Hey, dear. My name's Linda. What would you like to drink?" A middle aged woman in an apron came to her table.
"Water, please." She answered.
As the woman walked away, the bell over the door rang. Eve looked at the newcomer only to a familiar rogue. The girl in the animal print dress from the ice bar was now approaching her in a sweatshirt. She was carrying what looked like a small book in her hand.
"Luna." She greeted her.
"You are not who I came here to meet with." Eve moved to stand.
"No, no. Wait." The half-breed opened the book to reveal a tablet.
Eve watched her suspiciously as she set it up in front of her. With the touch of a button, Selena appeared on the screen.
"Thank you, Angela." Selena stated.
The half-breed nodded. She pulled something from her ear and dropped an earbud on the table. Eve watched her retreat to a booth beside the door before she turned her gaze to her mate's mother. Selena had cut her hair since Eve had last seen her. It was a short, pixie cut and it made her look younger. That, or freedom had been good for her.
Where ever she was, Selena was in plenty of sunlight. There were white shelves behind her and Eve thought she was in an office chair at a desk. She smiled as her son's mate looked her over, taking a moment to gaze at her as well. Eve stuck the earbud in her ear, waiting for a greeting.
"Luna Eve." Selena smiled at her.
"I didn't think you would come. I thought this was a trap." She replied.
"I had to see if you would come. And how you would come. I don't know what kind of terms I'm on with anyone right now." She explained.
"You're in no danger from StarLight. Flint's trying to find you though." Eve stated.
"I know he is. He wants answers. I hope that by giving them to you, he'll stop looking." Selena sighed.
"You don't want to see him? Explain yourself to him?" She furrowed her brows.
"I do. Of course I want to see him. Unfortunately, I can't return to GreenTree now. Not with things as they are." She answered quickly.
"Okay, but you told me not to tell him I was meeting you." Eve crossed her arms.
"Here you go." Linda dropped off her glass. "Did you have enough time to look over the menu?"
"Nothing else for now. Thanks." She replied.
"Alright. I'll be back to give you a refill." The waitress nodded and left.
"If you had told my son you were meeting with me, he would have come with warriors." Selena stated when the Luna looked at her again.
"That's why I agreed not to say anything. There are still questions for you to answer." Eve took a small drink of her water, hoping to appear casual.
"True. Yet, now that I see you I know what I've been feeling." She smiled softly.
"What do you mean?" She restrained the urge to touch her stomach.
"You're struggling with the Alpha power. You're pregnant." Selena spoke in a sure tone.
"I need help." Eve rubbed her face tiredly.
"I know, honey. I'm going to help you." She spoke in a reassuring tone.
"How?" She asked in a small voice.
"I don't have all the answers. When I got pregnant with Flint, my father was worried about the Dolan bloodline and the power in it. He gave me a book. It has an old legend in it." Selena stood and stepped out of frame.
Eve waited in silence for several minutes until her mate's mother sat in view of the camera once more.
"I will find it. I know I still have it. Listen, are you on an all meat diet?" She stated.
"Yes. Please, find that book. No one knows anything. I've been turning without meaning to, I woke up running on my paws when I fell asleep in my bed wearing human skin, I k-"
Eve took in a sharp breath to stop herself from finishing that sentence. I killed someone. These were words she couldn't express. Not now, not with Selena.
"It's worse for you than me. I'm sorry, Eve. I'm going to help you. I promise, that pup will be safe. Always." Selena tried to calm her.
"Okay." She inhaled and exhaled heavily through her nose as the power rose in her chest. "Okay. Thank you."
"I know there is more for me to explain." She eventually spoke again.
"Yes, Selena. There definitely is." Eve nodded.
