Chapter Chapter Seventeen
She tore them apart, one by one, and she was unable to stop herself or reign herself in. Briar's screams were still echoing in her mind when her eyes sprung open. It wasn't her abrupt movement that woke Flint, it was the panic that flooded his senses.
He sat up to find Eve trying to catch her breath on the end of the bed. It hadn't been his frantic emotions that woke him, it was the feelings of his mate. Once she had calmed her racing heartbeat, she turned toward Flint sheepishly.
"Everything's okay." She tried to force herself to smile but she could tell how lopsided it was.
"I know." He nodded calmly.
"Go back to sleep. I'll go check on breakfast." Eve spoke quickly.
The Luna moved to stand but Flint grabbed her arm. He pulled her to lay in his arms once again, silently denying that she should leave.
"It was just a dream." He stated knowingly.
"I know..." She breathed nearly silently.
"Then rest for now. The sun isn't up yet." Flint kissed her forehead.
Eve obediently closed her eyes and took a deep breath. His scent and touch calmed her nerves and reminded her of her place. She was always safe beside him; of this she had no doubt. Without realizing it, she drifted back off to sleep, surrounded by his warmth.
"Eve. Eve, baby." Flint's voice pierced the darkness of her slumber.
The Luna sleepily pulled her eyes open; her mind was still clouded. Her mate smiled down at her as he examined her swollen lips and half opened eyes. He placed a gentle kiss on her mouth, allowing his electric touch to stir her to consciousness.
"Wake up, baby." He whispered as he pulled away slightly. "We have to get back to GreenTree."
"Right. The pack." Eve slowly sat up beside him.
"The doctor first." Flint nodded.
The Alpha was already dressed in a pair of dark jeans and t-shirt. He went downstairs while his mate took a quick shower. When she pulled her chocolate brown sweater over her head a thought occurred to her, one that nearly made her jump out of her fresh leggings.
Briar! I killed his parents! He's an orphan now... The simple statement produced a sinking feeling in her chest.
Orphans do not last long on their own. The animal replied in a small, somber tone.
"No." Eve spoke out loud, unable to keep her thoughts silent any longer. "No. He will live. He's just a pup. He did nothing wrong..."
It doesn't matter if he is innocent. Nature doesn't consider this. The she-wolf answered, clearly upset.
Eve finished pulling her long, straight hair into a ponytail. She grabbed her boots from the foot of the bed as she ran downstairs. Flint, who had been frying sausage in the kitchen, felt a disturbance in the air before he heard the quick steps of his rapidly approaching mate.
"What is it?" He stepped into the living room.
"Briar. We can't leave until we look in on him." Eve stated quickly.
"But you're fine? You feel okay?" Flint released a breath and placed his hand on top of her head.
"He's an orphan. We can't just leave him on his own." She explained her thoughts.
"Come in here. We need breakfast." Flint steered her to the counter in the kitchen.
"I'm serious, Flint. He's a lone pup now." Eve sat reluctantly on the stool.
"He has a grandfather, baby. Remember? His name is Norman, I think." He slid a plate of meat in front of his mate.
"Who's to say he isn't ill and weak? Or that his mind hasn't aged away his thoughts?" She pondered aloud.
"Okay. Just eat. I'll take care of it." Flint kissed her forehead before calling into the house, "Anna?"
A few moments later, the specialist warrior entered in her usual cargo pants with a dark, fitted shirt.
"Alpha. Luna." She nodded at them in greeting.
"I need you to find the address listed for Briar Taylor through the Summerville school system. His emergency contact was his grandfather. If he has a different address, I'll need that one too." He stated.
"Yes, Alpha." Anna nodded before walking back upstairs.
By the time the couple had finished their meal, the specialist returned. She handed Flint a sheet with the information on it he'd requested. Eve collected their things and put on her makeup. She was anxious to calm her nerves and see that the pup was safe with her own eyes.
"Stick to your assignment. My mother is bound to have left a trail somewhere. A clue. I expect you to be able to find it." He spoke in a serious tone as he loaded their suitcases into the hatch.
"Yes, Alpha." Anna nodded.
Flint climbed into the driver's seat. He could feel Anna's determination and dedication to StarLight. If anyone could find Selena, He was sure it would be her.
"Thank you. Your hard work is appreciated." Eve smiled through the open passenger window.
"Luna." Anna nodded gratefully, smiling a bit.
Flint drove toward Summerville. According to the GPS, they were forty minutes away from Norman's home. Briar and his parents apparently lived in his home with him. Eve was nervous but more than that, she wanted answers. The Alpha played soothing music and allowed his mate to mull over her thoughts.
"If he's in a bad situation, I want to take him to Stardust Hope." Eve stated as they turned into a small neighborhood.
"Stardust- What? Why?" Flint looked at her with confusedly furrowed brows.
"We don't place rogues and half-breeds. They do." She explained.
"He won't need saving, Eve." He parked the car on the narrow suburban street.
"I hope not." The Luna sighed as she tried to swallow the guilt haunting her mind.
