Chapter Chapter Four
Eve found herself seated on the examination table with Flint on the stool beside her. The thin paper beneath her crinkled loudly each time she fidgeted. Her mate sensed her anxiety and he placed his hand on her thigh. The warmth that radiated through her from his touch soothed her, just before the exam room door opened.
"Good morning, Luna. Alpha." Emily nodded to them with a polite smile.
"Doctor Mills." Flint greeted her.
"So, how are we feeling?" She pulled up a seat in front of Eve.
"I've been getting a little dizzy and sleeping is harder than it used to be." She admitted.
"And the sickness?" Emily removed the stethoscope from her neck.
"It's about the same. Eating is... Not good for my stomach." Eve replied.
The doctor listened to her lungs and then her heart beat. She retook her seat and opened the file she'd been carrying.
"I see here that you've actually lost weight since I saw you last. Did you try sticking to plain diet I gave you?" She asked.
"Of course." Eve nodded.
"I'm going to send you home with some Ondansetron for nausea. Also some more prenatal supplements to up your vitamin levels. On average, the sickness subsides within the first three months. Hopefully you're coming up on the end of this part." Emily tried to reassure her.
"And until then?" Flint asked in a flat tone.
"We let the Ondansetron do its thing." She smiled calmly.
"And the dizziness?" Eve probed.
"Your blood pressure is good. Your blood sugar could be higher but it isn't dangerously low. I would say that once we get you eating, the light headedness will no longer be an issue." Emily explained.
"She's only sleeping five hours a night. Much less than she used to. And her wolf is more restless. She wants to run all the time." Flint stated.
"Being pregnant can come with some oddities. Ten weeks isn't very far along and fluctuations in energy levels are to be expected at this stage. Who knows? Next week she may feel the need to sleep all day."
"Her wolf will be experiencing the same things. Energy spikes and hormone changes are completely normal." The doctor responded as she stood to prepare the machine on the other side of Eve.
She wrapped the end of the ultrasound probe and pulled a curtain across Eve's lap. The Luna slid down in on the table and placed her feet in the stirrups. After a feeling of cold, dull pressure; the monitor came to life. At first it looked like the snow on an old television set surrounded by flashing shadows. A few moments later, an image appeared.
The framing of a small mass came into light. Though the proportions were not even, it was clearly the formation of a nearly human head and body. Flint stood from his stool and leaned over Eve's head to peer at the screen. Emily reached up to the monitor and pressed a button. A second later, a strong re-occurring noise filled the room.
*Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh*
The steady, fast rhythm instantly cleared the minds of both expecting parents. They stared at the screen in awe.
"That is your pup's heartbeat." Emily smiled.
*Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh*
The sound felt deafening. Flint placed a possessive hand on Eve's head, his mind was overwhelmed by the reality of what was in front of him.
Precious... Eve's sluggish thoughts were light, as was her chest.
Our pup. Her wolf was at peace. More content than she had been in days.
Half of us, half of Flint. She agreed silently.
It is everything. The she-beast echoed her human's feelings.
Flint allowed the sound to wash over him. He was absorbing it, soaking in the moment.
It's so small. Was the thought circling his brain.
Small and defenseless. The wolf replied.
We will protect them. Both of them. Flint looked at Eve's joyful, awestruck expression.
We must. So we will. The beast responded in a matter of fact tone.
The Alpha was tense. As happy as he was to see his growing offspring, a larger and more primal part of him yearned to rid the world of its enemies. And as soon as he could, he would.
"Look what we did." Eve leaned her head on his chest.
"I know." Flint breathed.
After another moment, the doctor removed the probe and the curtain. All the while, the image and sound were left playing on the sonogram machine.
"Here is your copy of the photo. I also burned you guys a disk of the video." Emily handed Flint the objects in her hand.
"So everything is on schedule?" Flint asked.
"Yes, Alpha. Everything is progressing perfectly." Emily answered.
"Are you sure?" He probed firmly.
"Absolutely... I have to ask; how are you feeling, Alpha?" She spoke carefully.
"Me?" He raised a skeptical eyebrow at her.
"Yes. How is your wolf's energy level? How are you sleeping?" Emily probed.
"I- Why? You're an OBGYN, are you not?" Flint furrowed his brow.
"I am." She chuckled before answering. "You and Eve are connected on a level that cannot be understood medically. You are mates, so the things she goes through may very well have an effect on you."
"Right..." He sighed with frustration.
Eve knew that Flint hated talking about the things that bothered him. Even more so, Emily's good natured personality was starting to sound patronizing to him. The Luna touched his shoulder. She wanted to reassure him, like he always did for her.
"I've been fine." He spoke definitively.
"Should that change, I want you to know that you can call my office as well as your regular physician." She replied easily. "Do you guys have any further questions?"
"No. I think we're good for now." Eve answered for them both.
"Okay. Well, pick up your medication at the front desk. I'll see you guys again in four weeks." Emily smiled at them both before leaving the room.
Eve pulled her underwear and skirt back on before tossing her gown in the bin. She and Flint took a moment to look over the pictures they'd been given.
"I can't believe we made a pup." Eve stated quietly.
"I know." He breathed.
She handed him the photo once again and their eyes met. Eve could always sense how Flint was feeling. It had become as natural to her as experiencing her own emotions. She laid her palm on his chest, giving him her support without uttering a word.
It was instinctual. Just as Flint would always be there to ease her difficulties, Eve would always be help him shoulder his burdens. She tilted her face toward him and he wrapped her in his firm, loving embrace. Their lips met and the feeling that ran through their veins served to remind them both that no matter their struggles... They were never alone.
