Chapter Chapter Forty
It had been two days since Eve’s phone call, Flint hadn’t spoken to her since. It was uncomfortable for him. He always felt stiff and out of place. He had been sleeping on the couch in his office in HQ. Every minute, he could Eve in his mind. He knew how she was doing.
She hadn’t had any dizzy spells since he had placed some space between them. This served, in his mind, as proof that his power was overloading her when he was near her.
Just as Flint could feel how his mate was doing, he could also sense her emotions. He knew the distance between them was painful and confusing to her. Yet, it was for those reasons why Flint didn’t address his absence.
He had turned his mind to work. He set to finding out all there was know about Jack Danes. He was a rogue, fully bred wolf and in his fifties. He had lived in the valley for over thirty years, after having been cast out of GraySky. Apparently, he conspired to sabotage the Beta tournament.
Flint had also focused a great deal of effort into finding Sarah Becker. He had several teams of warriors searching throughout the valley. On top of that, he had sent a few specialists to the NorthWood border for reconnaissance. Apart from rumors, they had nothing to report.
He’d received a call yesterday that Alpha Daniel’s son would be camping with his friends in the southern woods of the territory, regardless of his father’s disapproval. Flint placed a call to NorthWood, where he was assured this wasn’t the case. He hung up and reigned himself that these were just more rumors.
Flint now found himself staring at a desk covered in paperwork. He couldn’t seem to concentrate on the search reports and files of personal information on rogues and half breeds. His eyes were constantly drawn to the photo on his desk. It was from his coronation.
He and Eve were dancing. They paid no attention to the camera. Flint could see her bright smile and the warm glow in her eyes, even in the framed image. It was as distracting and pleasant as it was painful. He sat down in his chair and quickly picked up the phone.
“Snow Slide.” An elderly female wolf answered.
“This is Alpha Flint Dolan. I need to speak with Alpha Noah.” He stated.
“I’m sorry, Alpha. Alpha Noah doesn’t take phone calls. I can put you in touch with Elder Kenneth. He is our pack’s chief advisor.” She replied.
“Do it.” Flint nodded.
As the phone rang it occurred to him why Noah may not take phone calls any more. Shifting forms gets more difficult as a wolf ages. The lifespan of a Lycan can be up to one hundred years old, and Noah was already nearly seventy. Perhaps he decided that when the ability to shift forms left him, he would remain forever on his paws.
“Speak.” An old man’s voice interrupted his thoughts.
“This is Alpha Flint Dolan. Who am I speaking to?” He replied.
“Who did you call? Foolish...” He grunted. “It’s Elder Kenneth.”
“Noah was helping me with something.” Flint gritted his teeth to contain his annoyance.
“Yes, I know why you’re calling.” Kenneth sighed.
“I need to know what’s happening.” He stated.
“Noah argues for us to give you a highly protected legend. We, as the elders, are deliberating. It will take time.” He answered.
“How much time do you think I have to spare in this situation? I can tell you, I need answers. I need them now.” Flint was growing more and more frustrated.
“Nature is taking its course with your mate and pup. To subvert nature... It will take longer than a week to decide if we should do anything.” Kenneth replied bluntly.
“D-decide to-” Flint inhaled sharply, cutting himself off.
His wolf was howling in his mind, thrashing for freedom. He was furious. Too furious to think and just enough to tear someone apart. Flint inhaled through his nose.
“How long?” The Alpha growled.
“After the Call. Maybe a week after.” Kenneth answered.
“Tell the others.” Flint hung up the phone.
He began pacing around, trying to calm his inner beast. The wolf was still writhing and fighting to take control. He turned suddenly and thrust his fist out. He repeated this action until the entire wall was shaking.
He eventually felt the bricks on the exterior of the building begin to crack and crumble. The window beside him shattered from the vibrations. He inhaled sharply again, trying to withhold the urge to destroy everything around him.
At that moment, the door swung open. Flint turned angrily toward the intruder only to freeze in place. He tried to swallow the aggression swelling in his chest.
“Your assistant called me out of a meeting.” Elijah met his gaze fearlessly.
“Go back to it!” Flint barked in response.
His father didn’t speak. He just stepped into the office and closed the door behind him. The Alpha scoffed and turned around. He continued taking slow, deep breaths. Elijah examined the office. There was a pillow on the back of the couch and the desk was covered in haphazardly stacked, mounds of paperwork.
“Why have you been staying here?” Elijah furrowed his brows.
Flint growled and threw himself into his desk chair.
“Answer me, boy!” His father raised his deep voice threateningly.
“Where else should I be?! With Eve?! I can’t be! My power is pushing her over the fucking edge!” Flint shot to his feet.
“What?” Elijah’s eyes widened a bit.
“My power, the pup’s, Eve’s, the pack’s... It’s killing her!” His voice was suddenly a whisper, “I’m killing her.”
“No.” He lifted his hand toward his son to calm him. “That’s not what’s happening.”
“Yes! Yes, it is! I showed you-”
“I know what you showed me from the book, but you need to listen to me now.” Elijah dropped his cane and took Flint by the shoulders. “You’re closeness doesn’t change the fact that she shares your power.”
He stopped trying to turn away and instead looked at his father in bewilderment.
“You need your Luna to control yourself. She needs you to be stronger. The power is always shared. She feels your power if you’re next to her or on another continent.” Elijah released him. “But without one another, your control will slowly fade. As will her strength. And now, with all the power inside her-”
“No...” Flint ran his hand through his hair, pushing it back.
“How long have you been here?” His father gestured to his unshaven face.
Something grabbed his attention. Anger, confusion, despair. A torrent of emotions flooded his mind on a wave of power. Elijah looked up as if he too, had felt something.
“What’s-”
“Eve!” Flint grunted and fled the office.
He didn’t run to the elevator, instead he lept from platform to platform until he reached the first floor. He was moving at full speed until he made it to the parking lot. Flint looked at the SUV before hastily shaking his head. He tore off his clothes without another thought.
He could hear his mate’s wolf. She was howling. It sounded sorrowful, yet furious. He shifted into his wolf form without effort. He began running as if his life depended on it. Flint didn’t care if he was weaving through streets or launching over yards as he raced toward his mate. He only cared that he got there before the power inside her, crushed her.
