Back on Vehement’s bridge, Colonel Evan Reverre was plotting the progress of the 95th on his viewer when a cadet hurrying past caught his eye.

‘Spinit, come here!’ he yelled.

‘Sir?’ The boy approached tentatively.

’Access my comms node,’ Reverre told him. ‘There’s a message there from Freba at the Ministry, just received. Forward it to all the relevant people.’

‘Yes, sir, immediately, sir.’ Then the boy looked confused. ‘Er, who exactly is that, sir?’

‘The people on the ground, you idiot!’ The back of Reverre’s hand clipped Spinit’s cheekbone.

‘Yes sir, sorry sir, right away sir.’ Spinit retreated.

’Is it any wonder we’re losing this war? Cretins, all of you,’ Reverre shouted after him. ‘Just as well,’ he added quietly to himself.
