Chapter Chapter Fifty Eight

Flint watched in awe as Eve bit into Bastian's throat. She began screaming and Flint felt it. Her pain, Bastian's static was leaving her. He didn't know how or why, but Bastian and Eve were connected. Somehow, someway, it hurt her to kill him.

Bastian's limb body sank against the outside of the cabin behind him. Eve fell back onto his still chest. She was wailing and crying. Eve grabbed her stomach as she screamed out again. Flint transformed back into his human form as Elkin and Blair ran to Eve's side.

"No!" A shrill voice cut through the air.

Callie jumped down from the cabin's roof, onto the deck. She grabbed Blair from behind, squeezing her neck dangerously. The young woman froze, staring at Eve with wide eyes. The Luna couldn't focus on anything but the cramps that were raking her entire body.

"You killed him!" She screamed.

"Let her go, if you know what's good for you." Duncan ordered her from the yard.

Callie howled sadly, before snapping Blair's spine. She lept onto the porch as Duncan, Johnny, and Austin led the charge after her. She was the only Shadow wolf left alive. Blair's open, empty eyes were staring at Eve. Making the Luna growl. So many had died, and the reasons seemed irrelevant now. Hot liquid gushed down her legs, just before another cramp shot across her lower back, into her gut.

"Her water just broke. The pups are coming." Elkin stated as Flint ran onto the deck.

"Eve." The Alpha dropped to his knees and pulled her away from Bastian's lifeless body.

"Flint. You're here." She smiled as exhaustion overwhelmed her.

"Of course I'm here, baby." He pressed his forehead to hers, savoring the electricity she produced.

"Ah!" Eve jumped and held her stomach tightly.

"Alpha, we need to move her. Preferably somewhere dry." Elkin stated.

"Inside." Flint cradled Eve to his chest and hoisted her as he stood.

"It's caving in." The Luna hoarsely stated.

"Come on." He turned and carried her toward the driveway.

Flint nodded toward the truck bed with the cab cover. Anna opened it and Flint slid his mate inside. Elkin climbed up behind her. The doctor began feeling her stomach just a moment before more hot liquid spilled down her thighs.

"Oh, no." Eve was panting for air.

"It was just your second water breaking. Both pups are ready to come out. Now." Elkin informed her.

"What do you need?" Anna asked from the threshold.

"Blankets, towels, anything dry." The doctor replied.

She turned and left, looking for supplies. Flint climbed into the truck bed and pulled Eve into his arms again. She winced from the pain in her lower spine, but still snuggled closer to him. His electricity was soothing to her, even if the throbbing pain in her throat remained.

"Here, Eve." Flint pulled the leather pouch from around his neck. "You have to eat these. It's the binding agent I told you about."

Eve opened her mouth trustingly, too weak to even lift her hand. Flint poured the berries into his hand. He dropped them into her mouth and she grimaced, swallowing them.

"Bitter." She commented.

"Do you feel any better?" Elkin asked, listening to her stomach with the stethoscope from his jacket pocket.

"No." Eve breathed.

"She needs more." Flint grabbed the pouch from the doctor's neck.

He fed her that palm full of glowing, turquoise beans as well. She refused to chew them, swallowing them whole once more. Eve felt something cold gather in her chest. It moved slowly downward, coming to rest in her stomach. Another pain, this one devastating. Eve jerked and tensed her muscles.

The cold eased the weight of the power off her chest. After several deep, focused breaths; it was completely gone. All that was left was exhaustion. Flint felt the power leaving her. He could feel her relief to have it gone. A momentary smile graced is lips.

"These were all I could find as far as 'dry' goes." Anna returned and tossed a pile of t-shirts into the bed of the truck. "I found them in the laundry room by the kitchen. They smell clean but really smoky."

"That'll do." Elkin nodded. "Alright, Luna. You ready to have these pups?"

"Am I allowed to say no?" She smiled weakly.

"No." Elkin replied.

"Then, yeah. Let's do it." Eve sighed.

She didn't know how she was supposed to give birth. Her entire body was so worn down from toting the power, so tired from the battle, and so achy from the pain; all she wanted to do was sleep. It would take all her strength to have the pups, and she currently had no strength to give.

Flints soothing electricity was coursing through her. Reminding her that she wasn't alone; her mate was finally with her. His strength, simply being in his presence, made Eve feel like she could do this. She decided in that moment that even if it killed her, which it felt like it could, she would push these pups into the world. They would live, no matter what happened to to her.

Callie had managed to make it across the road in front of the cabin. Johnny and Duncan were on her heals, with four other StarLight wolves behind them. Duncan reached for her with his hands, diving toward her. However, Callie dodged him and sped up. She was crying angrily, allowing her emotions to fuel her movements. She never turned to face her pursuers.

Callie took leaping steps as she fled toward the tree line across the open field. Johnny jumped over Duncan, catching up to her. The wind from her lifting her boots brushed across his open jaws. Shade encompassed them. Callie jumped off the ground, grabbing the truck of a nearby tree.

The steel spikes on the arches of her boots helped her ascend quickly into the air. Johnny lept after her. He snapped his teeth on her pant leg, trying to pull her back to the ground. Callie kicked him in the face, sending his body tumbling to the ground roughly. The wolves were trying to follow her movements from below while two of them shifted into their human forms.

Duncan jumped into the tree, determined to catch her. She'd killed Blair just to ease her rage. They'd been forced to witness the useless, senseless death of a twenty year old girl. She had been a loyal, dependable friend to the Alpha family. A kind, loving family member to all of StarLight. It was infuriating.

Callie had seemingly vanished. The commander peered through the pouring rain and swaying branches. He couldn't see her and her scent was faint. It seemed to be all around. A feeling swelled through the mindlink, grabbing everyone's attention. Excitement... No, possibility. It crashed through StarLight pack like a tsunami.

"GO! After her!" Duncan shook the feeling from his thoughts.

As the wolves ran forward and the men continued climbing through the forest, a sound pierced the air. A shrill, hoarse crying sound. Duncan and Johnny met gazes before glancing back at the cabin, focusing on the noise. Eve had done it, at least once. There was a new Dolan in the world, but still one left to be born.
