Hardly the middle

T’is only the beginning

Of heat

Of breathless stifling

Of listless languor

Sweating through every pore

Thunderstorms

Lightning

Hail

Tornadoes

Sunburns

Dehydration

Impossibly early sunrises

Sleepless nights

And on the shortest day

When ice coats all

I wish for just an hour

of unremitting sun

never quite contented with

Mother Nature’s

whims as she dictates

the rhythm of my life
