Chapter 28
"Seriously, Dani? In the Chapel?" Grace stormed in and walked down the aisle towards me while guards march behind her. There were no lit sconces in the chapel, but the moonlight shining on the glass windows lit up the place.
I leaned against the priest's chair on the altar and had the table removed, so I saw the mud stain on the hem of her dress while she stood below the steps. "It's raining a little outside. Why would you have to come here? Shall I bring in a chair for you?" I asked before fiddling my lips with my finger.
"Stop playing god right now and send them away," she ordered. I kept my gaze on her, and so did she until she gave up.
"Hmm, I am no god, but the heavens gave me something that no one else in this lifetime could have. I can't waste it."
"I am not watching," she blurted before turning to face the door.
"You will make a good bride," I said. "You should find a king so you would stop bothering me."
She glared at me, but her face just made me smile. "Had you not been acting like a child, then I won't have to worry about you," she spat.
"Don't worry, what will happen tonight is far from a child's undertaking." Her shoulders dropped while she looked ready to argue more. "It's late. Go to bed, Your Majesty," I said.
"You never said that properly," she complained before finally leaving.
"Goodnight, Your Majesty!" I teased.
Moments later, someone knocked on the door before a pair of guards walked in. Behind them followed Rougan, who sported a brown tunic, black vest, pair of breeches and boots. Paige was in her usual black dress. They stopped below the steps while the guards walked away and shut the door.
"You didn't bring Sawyer? He would love the show," I mumbled.
Rougan pursed his lips while Paige looked around. "Where is the prisoner?" she asked.
"She asked where's the prisoner!" I yelled to the door to my left. A man growled from there, so Rougan sprinted towards the door.
I laid my palm in his direction and balled my fist, pulling up a wall in front of him.
He stared at the yellowish and translucent barrier before turning to me in surprise. "Turns out, I can do that," I informed him. He gently touched the wall, but I stopped him. "You may not want to do that." I flicked my fingers, and an electric current running on the wall became visible to his eyes.
His jaw dropped as he walked back in front of me. Paige smirked and rolled her eyes. "So you finally found out about your tri-power," she concluded.
"Force field generation, ecological empathy, limited mental manipulation," I whispered, turning to Rougan when I said the third super ability.
"We just came here for the prisoner. So what is this drama?" she asked.
A smile made its way onto my lips. "Don't worry. You will have a front seat if you watch." I laid my hand on the first bench to her left. "Shall we begin with storytelling first?" I asked, prompting Paige to cross her arms while Rougan slid his hands into his pockets, uninterested as he looked away. "I had a nice chat with the prisoner. His name is Vincent. He killed his mother and two nuns who tried to help her. You picked the worst people to be your food, and I like that." Paige rolled her eyes. "Your point being?"
"The years of imprisonment in the village surely gave them a chance to learn about the Sunkens and their secrets. When I say a Sunken, I meant yours." I pointed my finger to Paige, who furrowed her brows. "I always knew that I saw a child in the village."
They stood up straight while Paige uncrossed her arms in surprise. I gently nodded and smiled at them. "A vampire has a child?" I asked myself. "But that's impossible, isn't it? Unless he was born when you were still a human," I suggested. Her mouth slightly hung open in anticipation. "But then again, the last time you were human was 400 years ago." A chuckle escaped my lips as I shook my head. "Paige, Paige. There really has no limit to your insanity, has it?" "I did what I did to keep my child."
I burst out laughing, prompting me to slap the armrest. "Jesus Christ, Paige! Had no one told you what you deprived your child off? He deserved to grow old and have a life! Meet people outside that village and enjoy his youth! But you, oh, you selfish bitch."
"I would never let him die," she defended.
"Do you think he'd mind that? How old is he? Ten? Eleven? If he had a choice, do you think he'd choose to be a monster? Do you think he doesn't want to grow old? Meet friends, have a wife, settle in a place where he doesn't have to hide forever?"
"You have no say on how I want to raise him!"
"Raise? He's forever ten years old. You turned your child into a vampire. A child, Paige! He's not a doll, you psycho." Silence filled the chapel as my voice echoed in every corner. "Now," I took a deep breath and looked at the glass windows to my left. "At this moment, there are currently 200 Irethian knights in Westplains. Their mission was to provide training to Peravenan knights. However, I might have sneaked a little..." I squinted my eyes and smiled at them. "Additional mission." I laid my hand in their direction and clenched my fist to pull up a dome over them. Paige quickly sprinted towards the edge and punched on the wall, but it only created a faint grumble. Rougan stood in his place quietly as he gazed at me with confused eyes.
"What do you want?!" Paige yelled.
My eyes darted on the windows again as I rested my cheek on the back of my fingers. "Right now, that same dome around you is surrounding the entire village." I let them absorb that information before proceeding. "The 200 Irethian knights shall already be a kilometre away from the wall at this moment." I shot a look at them and smiled. "Ready to shoot flaming arrows." Then my eyes darted at Paige. "Sounds familiar?"
They gasped in unison while Rougan stepped forward. "This isn't you, Dani."
I smiled. "What do you know about me? You punished me for mentally manipulating you, even if I wasn't aware back then. Then, when I thought I'm ready to face my future, you made me turn to my past, turn to Julian. I have no problem loving a vampire, but you made it so painful for me. Then this bitch killed my betrothed."
"My child, Dani. He's innocent," Paige pleaded.
"And you think Julian isn't? He had prejudices against the Sunkens, yes. He didn't listen to me, I know. But should that cost him his life? I had the perfect plan. I had everything sorted out. You just had to trust me, but you didn't! You knew about my goddamn tri-power, and you still thought that you need to kill him to protect your village?" They were left speechless, filling the chapel with deafening silence. I sat straight and watched them. "Tonight, I'll put you in the same hell you made me go through."
Paige kneeled in front of me as she began crying. "I will do anything, Dani. But, please don't hurt my child. He's all I have. He's all I have!"
"Julian was all I have as well. So that," I nodded at her. "That's exactly how it feels."
She gently shook her head. "I am so sorry. Please. I'm sorry. Please forgive me."
"That's the sickening part about you, Paige. You only bother to ask forgiveness because you've run out of options. You are not sorry. You are afraid." I waved my fingers, dissolving the dome around them like a vapour.

They both looked around them while I glanced at the pendulum clock to the wall on my right. "I caged the Sunkens in the dome so they can't pass through. They will all be ashes in a few minutes. I hope Sawyer wasn't inside, though." Paige glued her eyes on the floor, shocked and upset, while Rougan sat on his heel to console her. "We have no match, Paige. We should go."
"Don't forget your prisoner," I cut in, couldn't hide the smile on my face.
Paige craned her neck and turned to me. Her eyes turned red, while the veins under them were visibly black. She opened her mouth, revealing a pair of fangs. "He's just a child, you witch!" she growled before sprinting towards me at full speed, but so did Rougan, who stood between us to stop her.
The wind blew within the walls as I leaned against my chair. A smile made its way onto my lips while I watched them stand on the steps of the altar. Rougan's hand remained on my sword that he plunged into Paige's rib. She choked on her blood as it dripped from her mouth and trickled down her pale chest. They both kneeled in front of me, gazing at each other.
"I'm sorry," Rougan whispered. I had no choice," he defended.
I rested my cheek on the back of my fingers again and watched them. Paige fell on her knees as her skin slowly turned grey. "You, you betrayed us," she whispered before turning to me. I smiled and waved my fingers to bid goodbye. Her body slowly dissolved like ash, leaving a lump of dust on the floor.
My sword clanked on the floor while Rougan was left kneeling on the ground. "She's like a mother to all of us," he mumbled. "My parents loved the gold and wealth, so once they got a safe position in the Peraven Palace, they rarely visited us in Dunfield. Paige, on the other hand, spent most of her life bringing order to the guild. She cared for us more than I did, and I respected her for that. Until she cared too much." He turned to me with penitent eyes. "I'm sorry for your loss," he whispered.
I sat straight and took a deep sigh of relief before I stood. "You betrayed her to save her child and the entire guild." I walked in front of him and tapped his chest twice. "We're done here. Great work."
His eyes bore into me like a guest trying to get his way in, but I shut every door and walked away. I've long given up the idea of us together because we only cause each other trouble, and I can't live a life like that. So maybe love isn't for me
or us.
The wind nipped at my cheeks as I pulled the door. Even the moon shone brightly in the night sky, giving me hope to find my peace. A genuine smile made its way onto my lips as I walked into the entrance of the palace, crossing my arms when the wind hugged me like a mother's embrace. It's cold outside, but this is the warmest I've ever felt since Julian's passing. I turned to the stars in the sky as tears filled my eyes. It's done, Julian. May your soul rest in peace.
