Chapter 26

I gently placed my hand on the table and reached for a bow without taking my eyes off him. His mouth gently hung open as he stared back at me. "I was taught very well. May I?" I asked.

He licked his lower lip before stepping aside so I could stand precisely opposite the first target sheet. I picked up an arrow and raised the bow to prepare for a shot. My memories in Dunfield came to mind as I took a deep breath. I caught a couple of figures at the side of my eyes, so I glanced at them as they walked along the arcade to my right.

In the centre of six uniformed guards was a nicely clothed and good-looking man. That must be Alfred Edwards II, 40, son of the late King Alfred I and Queen Felicity, and the reigning king of Ireth...for now. His gold crown shone while his red cape dragged along the floor. Before he could shift his gaze in my direction, I turned back to the target sheet and released the arrow.

The marquess and his companion gasped audibly as they both applauded me. "That's an inch away from the bullseye. I didn't know that you're good at this," said the marquess beside me. I smiled at him, but he wasn't the one I wanted to impress, so I turned back to the king. He stood on the arcade's steps while his guards behind him watched me.

"Your Majesty." The marquess walked up to him and laid his hand in my direction. "It's ready. We just..." He glanced at me before turning to the king. "Had a little fun," he mumbled.

The king walked up to me while the guards scattered around and surrounded us. He looked at me from head to toe as I put the bow back on the table. "Good day, Your Majesty." "Did no one tell you that this place is currently closed?"

I acted shocked and immediately went down on my knees, gently bowing my head. "Forgive me, Your Majesty. I'm only a workforce inspector, and I shouldn't have touched your things. Please forgive me. I'll do anything," I pleaded, making sure he could sense desperation.

I felt his gloved hand as he gently reached for my chin, so I could meet his gaze. He scanned me with his eyes until they landed on my chest and stayed there for a while. "Anything?" he asked.

A smile made its way onto my lips as I nodded. "Anything."

"Compete with me, then. If you win, you take home one thing in this palace."

"And if I lose?" I asked.

"I'm taking you to my bed."

I stood and stepped aside so he could walk up to the table. He picked up a bow and arrow before standing opposite the second target. I watched him with a smile on my face as I glanced at the guards around us. They were all staring at me like some prey, so I gave them an innocent look. Something I learned about men was that they always love to feel powerful when they were just slaves to their weaknesses.

The king released the arrow, and we watched it pierce through the sheet, an inch away from the bullseye. He raised an eyebrow as he turned to me. I picked up another bow and arrow and stood opposite the third target. "Good luck, Harriet," the marquess cheered at a distance.

I glanced to the king, who was already frowning with his arms crossed and eyes glued to the target. A smile made its way onto my lips as I attached the arrow to the string. I raised my arms and aimed for the target sheet. I also learned that men always love it when someone challenges them, but they hate losing. To get a man for your benefit, you have to let him think that he won. Once you fed his ego, and he will start letting his guard down. I shot the arrow, and it pierced three inches away from the bullseye.

I pretended to be shocked as I dropped my shoulders. When I turned to the king, he smirked and looked at me from head to toe. "I'm expecting you tonight, Miss Inspector," he whispered before walking away.

The marquess walked up to me and looked at me with pity. "You underestimated His Majesty. He shoots very well," he whispered.

A smile made its way onto my lips as I shook my head. "This is what I get for not sticking to my job," I said before looking around for Evie.

She came to me, carrying the satchel. "You may begin the inspection on the cooks, Miss Wilson," she said.

I turned to the marquess and bowed a little. "Thank you for your politeness. I will not forget this. What's your name?" I whispered. He blinked in confusion as he gently nodded.

"Adam Edwards, second-degree cousin of His Majesty."

"See you when I see you, my Lord." I bid goodbye before walking away.

We entered one of the palace's edifices, where Evie led me to another room upstairs. "You have to wait here for at least two hours before they serve the dinner. The monarchy usually eats together, and it may last for an hour. You're here as the King's guest, so if someone finds you, you tell them that," she instructed.

"You're pretty good at this," I spoke.

Her cheeks turned red as she looked away. "It's nothing," she replied before walking away. A smile made its way onto my lips as I looked around the lounge. There's a fireplace to my right, a window, and a pair of couches to my left. A bookshelf stood beside the wall, and the place immediately reminded me of Dunfield again.

I shoved my fingers between my breasts to get the vial that I kept. Few more hours, and Grace will have this kingdom again. She can help me gear up and stand a chance against Paige. That vampire kills without hesitation, so she must be ended without mercy.

The sun has set, and I waited patiently by the couch as I read a short story. "It's time, Dani," Evie called me as she stood by the door. I followed her while we took a few turns and climbed up some stairs.

"Is Grace ready?" I asked her "She's anxious. Her brother planned to kill her before, so having to send you in his lair just won't sit well with her," she replied.

"Hmm, you'd never like to find out how much we argued about this."

"I told her that you're doing fine here, so she calmed down a little."

We reached a heavily guarded hallway where pairs of guards stood at least one yard from each other; all of them held a rifle and carried a gun on their hips. I kept a straight face on when they stared at us while we walked up to a door at the end of the hallway.

The guard standing beside the gigantic door stepped forward and blocked his right arm. "Who are you?" he asked while I glanced at the other gripping his gun.

"His Majesty's guest. Surely, His Majesty has told you?" Evie asked.

The guard looked at me from head to toe before stepping aside and pushing the door. "Inspector Harriet Wilson is here, Your Majesty," Evie announced.

I looked around the room and smelled lavender essence. The room's interior was well-decorated with gold and red tapestry. There were four pillars on each corner, carved with gold-plated linings. An elegant gasolier hanging on the recessed ceiling illuminated the place along with the sconces on the walls.

Across the door was a couch facing the west where the king sat wearing his robe and drinking on a glass of liquor. His feet rested atop the small table in front of him while he shot a look at us. "What are you waiting for? Come in," he said coldly.

I glanced at Evie before walking in. When she closed the door, I stood beside the couch and started unzipping my dress. He looked at me with so much desire while he poured liquor into his glass.

I let my dress fall onto the cold floor, revealing my silk nightgown. The king took a breath as he placed his glass on the table and leaned his head against the couch. A smile made its way onto my lips when he reached for my wrist, prompting me to sit on his lap.

"Your beauty is out of this world," he whispered. "You look expensive, yet fragile." He held the back of my head and pulled me closer so he could kiss my neck. I gasped when his lips touched my skin while I humped against him. His hands landed on my bosom, squeezing it tight.

His crotch stroked between my legs, prompting me to let out a fake moan while he growled as I continued grinding against him. I smiled at him and reached for his lips to distract him, but I kept my eyes open and quickly pulled the vial from the hollow of my breasts.

He opened his eyes, prompting me to pull my face away and put my right hand on the backrest of the couch so he won't see the vial. "You have no idea what I'm planning to do with you tonight," he whispered before pulling me for a kiss again.

His hands grabbed my breasts while I bent backwards and opened my eyes. His kisses went down to my neck, so I took the opportunity to pour the liquid in his glass behind me and hid the vial behind the pillows.

He hurriedly carried me with my bosoms, so I grabbed the glass while we smiled at each other. I raised the drink when he laid me on the bed and handed it to him. He took it without hesitation and drank the liquor. "Come get me now, Your Majesty," I whispered.

He tossed the glass on the floor, causing it to break, but he didn't care. Instead, he brushed his lips onto mine while an image of Rougan flashed in my head. My heart pounded in pain as tears filled my eyes. The king kissed me hungrily, but all I could think of was Rougan's touch and how he held me during those nights. I ached for him while I was in bed with another man.

The king eventually went on full stop as he shook his head and tried to open his eyes. "Are you okay, Your Majesty?" I asked, faking my innocence. He looked into my eyes, so I gave him a sweet smile. "I think you drank too much. Would you like to rest for a while? I'm not leaving yet," I whispered, pushing him gently to get him off me.

"Ugh..." He laid on his back on the bed and massaged his temple while I drew the curtains on the balcony.

The cold wind blasted on my face as I walked closer to the cemented parapet. A smile made its way onto my lips when I saw the view outside the palace gate from four floors up the ground. The lamps illuminated the streets just fine while some people wandered the streets, getting in and out of the structures.

The king's bedroom was in the centre tower, and from where I stood, I found the rounded garden maze past the palace's lawn but just a few steps before the gate.

"Inspector?" the king called me, so I turned to the bedroom and found him walking towards me. His eyes and cheeks were red as he plastered a smirk on his face. "I feel ecstatic," he replied, reaching for my hips and pulling me closer so he could kiss me.

I gently pushed him away, so he frowned at me and grabbed my jaw. "Stop fighting," he warned. A smirk made its way onto my lips when he could no longer focus his eyes on me. I turned around and climbed onto the parapet. "What are you doing?" he asked, gently caressing my ankle.

"Look around," I whispered. "This is all yours. Have you ever told the world, Your Majesty?" He looked at me in confusion, so I laid my hands in front of him. "Let me show you."

His lips formed into a smile as he grabbed my hand to stand on the parapet beside me. The coping of the parapet felt cold against my feet as we looked around the kingdom. Somewhere on the maze, I caught a figure of a woman wearing a black dress. She stood at the centre, but the six-foot-tall garden maze hid her from the people on the ground. "Everything that you see is yours," I told the king. "Claim it."

"This is mine," he whispered.

"Louder, Your Majesty. Let them know who you are."

"I am your king! Alfred Edwards II! The rightful heir to this goddamn throne!" he yelled. I smiled and watched him spit nonsense. Then, the guards began to gather outside and turned their heads upwards to see us.

"All of you shall bow to me! You're all at my mercy! This kingdom is mine! All the money is mine!" Even the servants began to walk out of the palace to see their king on his balcony. "You! Kneel! Kneel before your king!" he continued. "They are your people, Your Majesty. Come join them," I whispered from behind him. "Be with them. They will accept you for who you are and whatever you did."

"My people." He turned to me with a smile on his face, but it slowly faded as he gripped onto his neck. I watched him cough while he tapped his chest repeatedly. His eyes landed on me while he struggled to breathe. "Help..." he whispered. He shifted his gaze at the ceiling before he got weak in the knees, and finally, his body fell off the balcony. A smile made its way onto my lips while the people on the ground screamed in unison. I leaned to the parapet and smirked. "Your king is dead!" I yelled. Someone opened the bedroom's door with a loud bang, and the guards walked in, aiming their guns at me.

"Where is His Majesty?!" one of them yelled.

"It doesn't matter," I replied before turning to the people outside.

"Alfred is dead, and you shouldn't be looking this way, but rather behind. The rightful heir to the throne awaits you. Give her a warm welcome!" They turned to the garden maze and watched Grace walk out from there. The guards aimed their guns at her, but she slowly lifted the veil off her face.

"I am Grace Edwards," she introduced calmly. "Daughter of King Alfred I and Queen Felicity. I'm here to mourn my brother and to ascend the throne," she announced before looking up in my direction. I smirked and inhaled the scent of

success.
