Indecent Folks

Chapter 17

"Are you sure I'm allowed to go outside?" I asked Sawyer. His friends smiled at me before they crossed the archway that leads to the field behind the village.

"Come on," Sawyer held my hand and took me outside. My eyes quickly landed on the base of the dome as I watched the vamps walk past it. I stood right in front of it and observed it. It really looked like a bubble up close. "What is it?" Sawyer asked.

I smiled and touched the dome. I don't feel it, as if it's not there. "It's the dome. It was this huge?" I asked myself and looked around. The dome covered the entire village and about five yards past the wall.

We headed to the field where Sawyer's friends played ball tag. He and I sat on the grass while he carved a small horse figure beside me, and I drew the field in a blank sketchbook.

"You're dead!" A guy threw the ball, hitting his friend in the face. Everyone burst out laughing while I chuckled softly and turned to my sketchbook.

"I've never met your parents," I mumbled without looking at Sawyer.

He shot a glance at me before he continued carving. "They died before the village turned."

I stopped in my tracks and shot a look at him. "And you still wanted to live for centuries even without them?"

He glanced at the ground and shrugged. "I'm keeping a promise."

The longer I stared at him, the more I saw the grief in his eyes. I flipped a page of the sketchbook and asked, "To whom and what promise?"

"Rougan," he replied, "He became like a brother to me when my parents passed away. I needed him, he needed me, and the village needs us, so we promised not to give up life whatever it takes."

I bit my lower lip and nodded gently. "I don't think I'll ever want to live another lifetime knowing that I'm the only one left in my family."

"Rougan became my family," he mumbled before picking up a tool in his barrel bag.

I continued sketching, but he shot a look at me and froze, so I turned to him. He glued his eyes on the paper. It's an almost finished sketch of his face's side view. "Was it bad?" I asked. He smiled and pulled my flat cap down to my face. "It's nice."

I hastily fixed my cap and caught his cheeks turning red. "Jesus, Sawyer! Are you blushing?" I teased.

A chuckle escaped from his lips while he continued carving. "You wish."

I was about to tease him more, but Rougan's voice echoed behind us. "Sawyer! Haven't we talked about this already?" The laughter and noise on the field faded after his scream.

I turned around and found Rougan walking towards us. His arms swayed angrily while he balled his fists. "What's his deal?" I whispered to Sawyer.

He stood up and rested his hands on his hip. "The sun was nice. She needed this," he replied.

"Stop making excuses. We talked about this. You were reckless! I told you that the situation is getting worse!"

"I can handle it!"

"No, you can't!"

I jolted when they yelled at each other's face, prompting me to stand up and take a step back. They gave each other a cold glare before Rougan pointed his finger at me. "What part of her nature is not getting into your thick skull?" he asked his friend. "She is not a damsel that you need to save!"

Rougan glared at me afterwards, but I just stared at him in confusion because I didn't get everything he just said. Maybe this is another matter that they know about me.

"Stop trying to blame me, Rougan," Sawyer spat. "Between the two of us, I was not the one who actually let his guard down-"

I shrieked when Rougan threw a hard punch on Sawyer's face. He knocked him to the ground, but Sawyer was able to stand up. "Am I the one who brought her here? This is your fault!" Rougan yelled. "I know! I fucking know!"

"Enough," I whispered as my knees trembled at the sight of them.

"Then stop making this harder for me!" Rougan yelled.

"Oh, that..." Sawyer pointed at Rougan's chest. "That isn't my fault." He smirked at him, and it just angered Rougan more, prompting him to grab his collar.

"I said enough!" I yelled on top of my lungs. To my surprise, the surface of the dome trembled as if blown by a strong wind. They shot a look at me while I glared at Rougan. "Get your hands off him," I warned. Shock filled his face while he gently let go of Sawyer. His head began tilting like he was trying to resist something inside him.

"Rougan?" Sawyer called.

"Goddamn it," he whispered to himself as he clenched his jaw.

I went to Sawyer, who had his eyes glued on his friend. "Are you okay?" I asked him.

He turned to me with his mouth slightly open before he held my cheek and nodded. "We should go back."

I turned to Rougan and found him staring at his shaking hands. He never looked this confused before. He gazed at me one last time before walking away. "What's happening to him?" I asked Sawyer. "Not your fault," he replied.

We watched Rougan walk away, and it took everything in me to not go after him. He was bothered by something, and if Sawyer's with me, who's going to be there for him?

We picked up our stuff and walked back to the village. I caught a few vamps glancing at me while we headed to the lawn. Sawyer was busy with something in his mind, so even if I wanted to ask what's up, I couldn't bring myself to speak. Four guards stood by the right wing entrance, and one of them sprinted towards Sawyer when they saw us.

The vamp whispered something to him, so I looked around and found the rest of the Sunken watching us from behind. Then I saw Lauren, Cooper and Paige among the crowd. "Is everything alright?" I asked Sawyer.

He turned to me and gently reached for my arm. "Come with me." His voice was cold, and it made me suspicious, but I went with him anyway.

We entered the mansion's right-wing and headed for the stairs until we made it to the last floor. It was dark as they were no lamps, but a glass window let in some sunlight. At the end of the narrow hallway stood an old looking door guarded by two vamps.

"Who's in there?" I asked.

"You'll see," he grabbed my arm, and I knew that something was wrong, so I pulled away.

"What's happening, Sawyer?"

He clenched his jaw and looked at me apologetically. "My fault," he mumbled before he dragged me to the door. The vamps pulled it open, and it revealed a simple room with a small bed and a bucket in a corner. It was like the cell for the prisoners in the basement, but bricks made up the walls, and there was only one small arched window with steel railings.

"I want to talk to Rougan-"

"You will. But only at the right time," Sawyer cut in.

"And when is that?"

He sighed before letting me go. "Whenever he likes." He walked out and closed the door. My shoulders dropped when darkness filled the room. The rain started pouring as I sat on the bed and hugged my knees, resting my back against the cold wall.

I didn't notice that I fell asleep while the rain still hasn't stopped. Rainwater dripped from the window and drenched the floor while I shivered from the cold wind, so I sat straight and let down my hair. It's night already. Whoever brings me my food, if there's any, I hope it's Norah.

My head cramped from the stress while I fiddled with my skirt. It wasn't me who went into a full-blown argument earlier, so why am I the one locked up? Someone made a noise outside, so I sat straight in anticipation. It wasn't Norah but the handmaid who usually prepares my bath and stuff. She walked in and placed the tray of food on the floor. The guard behind him stood by the door, watching me carefully.

"Where's Rougan?" I asked the handmaid.

She gently shook her head. "I'm not allowed to tell you anything, Dani," she replied coldly.

"Am I not going to have a lamp here at least?"

"You're not allowed to have any form of destruction," she replied.

I watched her walk away, and when the door had closed, I turned to the tray illuminated by the moonlight from the window. There were even no cutleries.

I slumped on the floor and dragged the tray closer to me to pick up a chunk of meat while a lump formed in my throat. I finished my meal and stared at the window. I have no place here, but they're keeping me for a reason, and it doesn't look good at all.

The only thing that makes me feel better was that they would surely get rid of me soon. I just hope it's not through death. I licked my lower lip and waited for god knows how long until someone opened the door again. It was Sawyer. He carried a blanket and a lamp in his other hand.

"What time is it?" I asked.

"Almost midnight."

He handed me the blanket, so I took it and covered my legs as I sat on the edge of the bed. "Rougan is not going to talk to me tonight, is he?"

His eyes briefly landed on the floor before he looked into my eyes. "Not now."

I sighed in frustration and ran my fingers through my hair. "Why would this village give me everything I need only to take them away from me later on?"

"Because that's how it's supposed to be."

"So, are you going to tell me what happened? Why am I here?"

He sighed and looked away. The few seconds of silence scared me a bit. "Paige and Cooper successfully made the Sapper," he announced.

I gasped in surprise. "T-then what's the point of keeping me here?"

"This isn't the right time for you to take it."

My shoulders dropped as I felt a sharp pain in my chest. "You can't be serious. What right time are you waiting for?"

"You're doing something that you are not aware of, Dani. We can't tell you about that just yet because it's risky. Your full awareness of your power is our demise."

I frowned at him in confusion. "So this is about me being a kingmage again?"

"Since the moment you stepped here, everything has always been about you being a kingmage. That's the main reason why I took you in that night. The smell of your blood revealed your identity to me."

I looked away as a sarcastic smile made its way onto my lips. "So it wasn't kindness," I realized. "You took me in because I'm different?"

"It's my fault. I shouldn't have let you in."

"What about Rougan?" I asked.

"What about him?"

"Does he regret-" My voice cracked. "Does he regret getting close to me as well?"

He glanced on the floor, rubbing his thumb against the lamp's column. "You can ask him yourself."

I shook my head and frowned at him. "I won't understand anything unless you tell me everything."

He shook his head too before stepping back. "One day, Dani." I watched him walk out of the room and disappear, along with my hopes to get an explanation.

**

One day. I waited patiently for that day. Every time the door opened, I wished it was Rougan, but a week had passed, and the only person I was able to talk to was Sawyer. He sat on the chair in a corner, crossing his arms while he watched me eat my dinner. "He's looking for you," he whispered.

I raised an eyebrow and shoved a piece of chicken meat in my mouth. "News to me."

"If it makes you feel better, he's not having a good time as well."

"What do you mean?"

"You've done severe damage, and Paige is losing her patience. Maybe one day we'll just tell you everything and...hope for the best."

Someone's growl echoed in the hallway so we both sat straight. It was so loud that we heard it clear, even if the door was closed. My heart sank when I realized that it was Rougan. "What's happening?" I asked.

We stood up while he headed straight to the door and left without responding nor looking back. The guard was about to close the door, but I ran towards it to stop him. "Wait! What were they doing outside?" I asked.

"We have no idea." One of them pulled the door harshly, so I had to let it go. I clenched my jaw and stared at the floor until my eyes caught the lamp that Sawyer left. Oh. A grin made its way onto my lips. I'd kiss the sky if I can.

I ran towards the lamp and grabbed it before turning to the bed. "I won't miss you." I threw the lamp on the floor, and the blanket immediately caught fire.

I watched the fire dance beautifully in front of me until it reached the wooden ceiling. The cold wind blew while I waited for the guards to open the door. "God almighty!" yelled one of them.

I smirked and tilted my head. "Indeed!"

"Tell them!" a guard said to his companion before turning to me and grabbing my arm. He dragged me out of the room, and I obliged happily. I bit my lip while we walked down the hallway. What is happening out here?

When we reached a hallway with arched windows, I ran towards the first one and looked outside. "Hey!" the guard pulled my arm, but I stood my ground as I scanned my gaze everywhere. Nothing was normal. I couldn't see a single vamp outside, and the place is no longer as bright as it usually was.

"What happened in the past week?" I asked, turning to the dome above us.

The guard pulled me harder, so I followed him. At the end of the hallway, we saw Lauren walking towards us. She raised an eyebrow before looking at me from head to toe and turning to the guard. "Take her to Rougan's cell." I frowned. "Rougan's what?"
