In Too Deep

Chapter 27

Chapter 27

“No!” I yelled in shock horror. I dropped to my knees beside him, his eyes were still open but he was losing consciousness fast. “Don’t worry Bastien, I can heel you.” I tried to reassure him.

“Actually, you can’t.” I heard Katia say from behind me, I could hear the smirk in her voice but I chose to ignore her. I concentrated on heeling Bastien; I put all my strength and power in to the healing spell. I didn’t care if it killed me as long as he lived.

“It’s not working!” I yelled at everyone and no one at the same time.

“I told you, it won’t work, it’s part of the spell. No power on earth can heal the damage it causes.” Katia explained. The wound in Bastien’s stomach started to blacken, and I knew I was totally out of my depth. I have never seen anything like this before.

“What is this?” I demanded, confusion and anger raging through me.

“Every plague known to man. As well as some unknown. All of the disease without the possibility of a cure. Certainly enough to kill a vampire, even one as old as him.” Bastien wasn’t Katia’s intended target but she seemed pleased with the results. The delight in her voice made me feel sick.

“She’s right…I can feel it, I’m dying.” Bastien gasped out.

“No, I will not let you die.” I said determined and I concentrated harder.

“Stop it; you are draining all of your power.” Bastien said to me softly but with determination shining in his blue eyes.

“I don’t care, you saved my life.” I said to him as I looked directly in to his eyes.

He took my hands in his and ran his fingers over mine. I felt a tear escape from my eye and run down my cheek. I have never cried in front of people before, in fact, I don’t remember the last time I cried, but right now I didn’t care. Bastien raised one of his hands and wiped my tears away.

“I’m sorry for hurting you.” He whispered to me. “I hope one day you can forgive me.”

“I do forgive you.” I said quietly, wanting to give him peace, I knew with a heavy heart that he wasn’t going to make it, I could give him this at least. After all, he did just save my life.

“I love you Freya.” Bastien gasped in pain.

“I love you too.” I replied. With that, his eyes closed, and his arms fell to the ground. “No.” I whispered.

Everything around me faded to darkness, Bastien is dead, and it’s all my fault. My chest felt like it would explode from the pain, I never let myself believe that I loved him before, but now I couldn’t deny it.

“Freya.” I heard Ryan say cautiously behind me.

“Leave her be son.” I heard Smithy say to him. I felt myself come slightly back to the present time, and my heart filled with rage.

I stood up in one sudden, sharp motion and turned towards the coven of witches, my rage directed at Katia, my mother.

“Murderer.” I said accusatory, I wasn’t sure exactly what she saw in my eyes but she took a step back, away from me.

“I did you a favour. You don’t need a man, they are disposable. After everything he did to you? He lied to you, manipulated you. And yet you still care for him? You are weak if you allow a man to treat you that way and get away with it.” Katia said, defending her actions.

“It was up to me to deal with all of that, not you.” I glared.

“He got in the way, I was aiming for you.” She snarled.

“I guess that shows what kind of person you are. What kind of mother you are.” I could barely contain my rage. My heart felt like it was split in two.

I drew on every power I have ever collected, the sky turned dark and thunder roared through the sky. Katia’s eyes widened, unsure exactly of what I was intending on doing, and to be honest I wasn’t entirely sure either.

The wind picked up again as it had done before when they arrived, they were scared and they were trying to leave. That was not going to happen. They may be more powerful than me but my rage and grief fuelled my power. I was barely in control of what I was doing.

I focused on blocking their escape, they were staying here whether they liked it or not, I wasn’t done with them yet. I deflected their spells that they continuously threw my way. I had to force my mind to focus on my intentions, and to come up with a plan fast.

I created it in my mind first, making the place physically real somewhere far away. A prison that they would never escape from. I didn’t have enough power to kill them so I needed the next best thing, which I had to hope they wouldn’t figure out before I finished.

I envisioned where I was going to send them, every detail needed to be perfect. I summoned crystals to appear in front of each witch, at this point Sophia figured out my plan, allowing her magic and strength to flow in to me, the rest of her family following suit. I gratefully accepted the extra strength.

The coven discovered my plan a moment too late. They threw their heads back and screamed as their powers were ripped out of them, flowing in to the crystals, causing them unimaginable pain. Their screams tore through the air, a deafening sound, causing many of those around me to cover their ears with their hands.

As soon as the spell was complete they collapsed to the ground, they were no longer a threat without their powers. But I needed to be sure. I transported them to the place I created especially for them in my mind, a prison fit for the kinds of people they were. Somewhere they couldn’t escape from.

I collected the crystals from the ground, which now contained their powers and locked them away in a box that I spelled to keep them contained. This wasn’t something that could ever get out.

I collapsed to the ground, exhausted. I’ve never needed to use that much power at one time before. I crawled back to Bastien, back to his body, I still couldn’t believe he was dead. He’s dead and it’s all my fault. I rested my head on his chest and let the tears fall freely.
