Immortals Of Byolla Bay

Chapter 21 – Rikki

Not sure if I’m relieved or even more worried than before. The way Kinsley accepted us and didn’t run away screaming into the night or have a mental breakdown impresses me immensely. She really is an enigma of her own design. My enigma.

I wasn’t planning on revealing the truth about who we really are for a long time. I’m happy it’s out of the way and Kinsley is still beside me. I’m worried mainly about what Drakkar has planned if he can get to her, which is not going to happen, but I’m also nervous about telling her the rest of our story. I need to explain our soulmate lore, that she is my bindende sjel.

In her eyes we have only just met, but in mine I’ve loved her since the day she was born. When I touched her it set inside my bones, became a part of my DNA. She’s as much mine, as I am hers. This is what I was thinking on when a voice brought me back to the present,

“Does he always space out like that?” It was Meshella, Kinsley’s best friend. Apparently she had been trying to get my attention and failed. “Forgive me, Meshella. I must have zoned out, I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night. What did you ask of me?”

She smiled, “I said thank you for taking Kinsley dress shopping. She showed me a picture of what she picked out and it’s perfect! Are you taking her to my party or does she need to ride with me?” Before I could answer her Maggie piped in, “We will be taking her. I need her help getting ready if you don’t mind?”

Meshella smiled, “Great! Kinsley is great at fashion input, but awful at doing it on herself, so please do me a favor and make sure she doesn’t try to wear her sneakers with that dress, okay?” Kinsley chuckled, “My shoes are more practical than heels, especially since we will be at a bonfire in the clearing. I’ll break an ankle before the party starts.”

I shook my head, “Nonsense, I will not let you fall.” Kinsley’s cheeks turned candy apple red and a huge grin broke out on my face before I could stop it. “Well if you zone out when she falls you won’t catch her.” Meshella joked.

I winked at Kinsley, “I do make mistakes, love. I am only human.” Kinsley put her hand over her mouth and chuckled at the inside joke her and I now share.

Friday night started out exactly like I figured. I was ready first, hours beforehand and Maggie was upstairs with Kinsley spending hours on their hair and whatever else girls do to get ready. When I brought Kinsley upstairs Maggie had a vast assortment of women paraphernalia splayed across her bed. My eyes widened. I had no clue it took all this just for females to get dressed. I told the girls I’d be downstairs and took my leave.

Maggie always took forever to get ready and now I know why I think. I should ask father if he ever has to go through this with my mother. Exactly 30 minutes before Meshella’s birthday bonfire was to begin, the girls finally came downstairs. My jaw dropped when I seen Kinsley.

Maggie had done her hair to where half was up and the rest splashed over her shoulders in a light brown cascade. The dress hugged her so tightly that I could see all her curves, and I felt my cheeks heat up. My stars I didn’t think she could get more beautiful, but here she is proving me wrong. Kinsley crossed her arms over her chest and smirked, “So I take it you like how I look?” All I could do was nod. Maggie burst out laughing and motioned for us to walk out the door.

The location of the bonfire was the glade beside the cliff that overlooked the fishing port where father and Gene worked. Maggie and I decided we could walk, or run since Kinsley knows what we are now, and I would carry Kinsley since she was unsteady in the heels Maggie forced her to wear.

We walked to the edge of the woods where the trail to the school was and stopped. Maggie reached down and tightened the strap on her high heels. She has mastered running in those things and it surpasses my intelligence as of how, but she can without tripping or falling even once. I looked down at Kinsley, who smiled shyly and looked away. A spurt of courage must have ran through me, because without asking her or giving her a warning, I scooped her up in my arms, earning me a squeal from her, and took off running down the trail.

The fire spread through me and I welcomed it gladly. I felt her relax as she wrapped her arms around my neck and pushed the side of her face into my chest. I glanced down at her, thinking I was running a little too fast for her human lungs to catch her breath, but she was smiling big as the wind whipped wildly through her hair. She was enjoying herself which made my chest swell with pride knowing I could put a smile on her face like that. We slowed down when we heard voices and music at the edge of the clearing. Maggie was brushing away a spider web she ran into and pulling some stray leaves from her hair. “Did you enjoy that?” I chuckled. She glared at me, “Next time I’m dressed like this, you lead the way. Just be glad it hasn’t rained and there is no mud or else both of you would have been covered.”

I went to put Kinsley down and when she was standing upright her arms were still wrapped around my neck. “That was so much fun! Can we do that again? I mean, not now obviously, but sometime soon? That was amazing!”

I laughed at her amusement, “Of course, anytime you wish. Just tell me and we’ll run as far as you want to.” It was then she noticed she still had her arms wrapped around my neck and her cheeks turned the familiar candy apple color, but she didn’t make a move to pull away.

I heard Maggie telling Meshella that we were here and so to lighten Kinsley’s embarrassment of her best friend finding us like that, I reached up and took her arms down, but brought her hands to my lips. “It was my pleasure carrying you, my lady. I cannot wait until I can do it again.” I kissed her hands and let them go as soon as Meshella walked from behind the trees.

“There you are! I been looking all over for you! Let’s go! I want to dance!” I smelled the alcohol on her breath as soon as she opened her mouth.

She led Kinsley into the clearing as Maggie came to stand next to me, “There’s more alcohol than kids here, in the middle of the woods, next to a cliff and Drakkar is lurking somewhere. I’m almost positive something bad is going to happen, one way or another.”

I sighed, “I can’t help thinking you are right. Between the two of us, Kinsley should never be out of our sight. No matter what happens.” Maggie nodded and we followed Kinsley and her inebriated friend into the party.
