Immortal Fire - Book One

Chapter 33

Strange electrical storms are forming all over the city of New York as the night progresses. Authorities are urging everyone to stay indoors and away from electrical appliances of all kinds…

I stopped paying attention to the reporter as soon as the camera panned out and there, in plain view for everyone to see, were green vortexes that looked like something straight out of hell itself.

“How is no one freaking out about those… things?” I asked in utter disbelief.

“Only supernatural beings can see it; as far as the humans are concerned, it’s just a strange electrical storm, but still, something normal to them.” It was Hayden that spoke, and I could not believe that he was decent to me. There was no tone of hatred or judgment in his voice at all.

“Then I’m guessing that it’s something that we need to worry about?” I asked, looking at each of them.

“Definitely,” Hayden answered.

“What do we do?” I asked.

“You do nothing but stay inside your room. I’ll go and speak with my brothers right now and you two are going to speak to your respective parties to find out what they might know.” It was Damien that answered, and he was acting like the Angel he was. Jesse nodded and left the room and Hayden ran a hand through his hair.

“What is it?” I asked; I knew him too well to not know that when he did that, something was wrong.

“I can’t contact Lunzos. We ran away against orders, remember?” he said. He was right. If we were to contact them, they would come to get us and drag us back to Lunzos and probably punish Hayden in a variety of ways for aiding in my escape. Hayden could never return there.

“Damien, can’t you find something out for Hayden?” I couldn’t stand the thought of Hayden being dragged back there for going against orders

“Yeah, I can. I have got to go right now though, but you stay in your room Aria. I mean it.” Damien vanished before I could even nod or say yes sir - maybe a salute would have been more appropriate...

“You better go to your room,” said Hayden; after Damien was gone

“You sound like my parents. Why can’t I just stay here with you?” I asked as I took a step toward him. Hayden tensed and looked away.

“Because I don’t want you to; that’s why.” The last bit of my heart broke as the words left his mouth and tears flowed down my cheeks in a silent stream.

“You know, Hayden, I never expected that you of all people could be so cruel. I guess I was wrong about you.” And with that said, I left and went back to my room, slamming the door.

The sound of something breaking downstairs caught my attention, but I ignored it. Instead of crying, I grabbed a pen and paper that was on the dresser and started drawing images that came to my mind. I was not even aware of what I was drawing until my fervor wore off.

Looking at the paper, it was an image of Hayden and Hunter’s faces; each half forming one head and a symbol that reminded me of something, yet not knowing what lay in the middle. Feeling disturbed by what I had drawn, I crumpled up the piece of paper and threw it across the room, watching it land in the corner behind the dresser.

I needed to see Hunter and find out what the hell was going on. Checking the time, it was two am. Everyone should be asleep by now and the warehouse was extremely quiet. Maybe I could go and be back before anyone noticed. Deciding to go and find Hunter, I grabbed my coat and snuck out of the room as quietly as possible.

Going down the spiral metal staircase was a mission of its own. Every step made a creak, and I was sure someone would bust me any second. When no one came, I let out a silent sigh of relief.

Walking through the living room I passed the mirror hanging on the wall and saw that it was broken… I decided that I should just leave it and continued until I came to the metal door that led outside and looked around. No one was there and I could not believe that I was doing this without being caught. Opening the door slowly and slipping outside, I closed it and a smile formed on my lips. The victory was fucking mine!

“It’s a little late to be going out, don’t you think?”

Shit. I am so busted.

Turning around, I found Damien standing in front of me with his arms folded over his chest. Muscles and tattoos bulged from his arms.

“You didn’t think that I was that stupid?” he asked, raising an eyebrow at me.

“Well, I could hope…” A smile formed on his lips, and he dropped his arms.

“Aria, are you trying to get yourself killed? Go inside.”

“No. I need answers and I’m going to get them.” I said adamantly.

“Aria…”

“Don’t ‘Aria’ me. I am sick of just sitting here waiting to be killed. If Hunter were going to kill me, he would have done it by now, and anyway, I’m going whether you like it or not.”

Pushing past him, I started toward the street where I had seen cabs drive past. The electrical storm was moving past the city and the vortexes were gone, but there was still a slight drizzle and my breath let out little puffs of white mist into the ice-cold air. Damien was walking beside me, and I was not going to let him stop me.

“I mean it, Damien, I’m going. You can’t stop me.”

“I know; that’s why I’m coming with.” Looking sideways at him skeptically, I felt a bit better knowing that he would be with me.

“Why are you helping me if you are so against me going?” I asked skeptically.

“Because, you don’t always have to do everything by yourself Aria, everyone needs help and guidance sometimes.”

“Even Angel’s?” I scoffed rolling my eyes at his statement.

“Even Angels…” he answered me seriously.
