Carol looked happy, but Damon frowned, appearing somewhat uncomfortable. I
reminded him that if we didn’t leave soon, we’d be late for work. Only then did he start the car.
This situation had happened once before.
It was when Carol had just transferred to our hospital. After work, she asked Damon for
a ride home, and we all went down to the underground parking lot together. Carol walked quickly and naturally took the front seat.
Despite my dissatisfaction, I didn’t say anything at the time out of politeness.
Once we got home, I argued with Damon, saying

He sternly accused me of being unreasonable: “It’s just a seat. Why do you care so much? Besides, Carol is new here, can’t you be
considerate?”
Considerate?
Any more of this, and I might as well give up my role as his wife to her!
I felt choked with anger, thinking he didn’t care about me. But now I realize, it’s just a seat, not worth getting upset over.
I turned my head to look out the window.

Up front, Carol kept chatting away, “Damon, that place we went to last time was so romantic and fun. We should go again sometime!” Her tone was shy, almost flirtatious.
Anyone who didn’t know better might think she was Damon’s wife, not only sitting in the front seat but also talking with him so naturally.
Unfortunately for her, Damon didn’t seem interested in conversing. He responded with a simple “hmm” and focused on driving.
Carol continued to desperately seek attention, bringing up various topics.
Damon ignored her completely, instead asking me, “Honey, did you have breakfast?”

His use of “honey” made me pause, and even the chatty Carol fell silent. He had never called me “honey” before. I nodded and replied quietly, “Yes.”
