Chapter 4
Chapter 4 Pretending to Be Mr. Steele's Girlfriend
"No... It's not necessary."
While a reward of 100 million would certainly be tempting, what Alva truly wanted was Colbert Steele himself... he's worth far more than 100 million.
She shook her head and refused with a gentle smile, "It didn't matter who it was in the car that day. I would have tried to help anyone I saw in danger. And I believe other people would have done the same in that situation. I didn't do it for your money."
"If you don't want the money... You can tell your father to contact my assistant. When it comes to projects, I will prioritize the Baldwin Group as our business partner."
Alva felt her eyebrow twitch. She put on a polite smile as she said, "Thank you for your kind offer, Mr. Steele, but it's really not necessary."
Just then, Colbert's phone suddenly rang.
"Excuse me. I need to take this."
Colbert took a glance at the screen and saw it was a call from his assistant, Corey.
"What's the matter?"
"Boss, I'm sorry. Miss Stanford was brought back to the mansion by Madam Steele."
Corey explained the situation.
"Why would Grandmother show up there?"
"I'm not sure..." Corey was also puzzled by how well-informed Madam Steele was, "B-But it seemed that Madam Steele wants you to...to marry Miss Stanford." Colbert frowned, "Not a chance."
He hung up the phone and stared at the screen, lost in thought.
Alva took this moment to take in his handsome features, sighing inwardly.
Before she came here, her mother had repeatedly told her that she should play the "savior" card well and get Colbert interested in her.
Alva kept her mother's words in mind as she said, "I'm satisfied as long as I see you safe and sound, Mr. Steele."
"Satisfied?"
"Yes." Alva nodded, pursing her lips gently, "I'm always happy to help someone in need. It always gives me a sense of satisfaction."
Even though the Baldwin family was at the bottom of the business and celebrity rankings in the city, Alva's personal charm brought her family a lot of good reputation and opportunities. She was known as a true beauty, inside and out.
She needed to keep up her reputation, even if it was all fake.
"Mr. Steele, shall we eat? I'm sorry, but I have to go to an orphanage after lunch. The children will be upset if I get there late."
Of course Colbert thought she was impressive, but meeting her in person... Something felt off about her.
He suddenly remembered Corey's words and asked, "Since you are so good at helping people in need, Miss Baldwin, I wonder if you could do me another favor?"
"Sure! What is it?"
"I want you to pretend to be my girlfriend."
"Girlfriend?" Alva's heart raced, feeling overwhelmed by the sudden surprise.
'Looks like my efforts today were not in vain after all,' she thought.
Alva hesitated for a few seconds before she asked, "What do you mean, Mr. Steele?"
"My family has arranged a marriage for me, but I don't want it. So, I want you to pretend to be my girlfriend. When the matter is settled, I can give you anything in return; you name it."
Alva suppressed her excitement and tried to ask as calmly as she could. "Why me?"
Colbert glanced at her with indifference. "If you don't want to, I can find someone else."
"No, no, that's not what I meant..." Alva's composure almost faltered, "I wouldn't refuse a request from you, Mr. Steele."
Besides, this is what she came here to do!
Even if it's just to pretend to be his girlfriend, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Of course she wasn't going to turn it down. Little did she notice that the moment she agreed to Colbert, a scornful smile flashed across his face.
'Just what I thought, she's no different than all the other women.'
Colbert even began to doubt whether Alva's rescue of him was truly a coincidence or a well-planned conspiracy...
