Chapter 14
Chapter 14: The One
Kaleb checked his mobile just as he entered the penthouse. He thought, ‘She did not reply.’
As he walked in, he muttered, “They should be asleep by now.”
It was already twelve in the evening when he arrived, coming from an entire day of work at the company. He first knocked on the
door where Scarlett was supposed to rest, but after hearing no answer, he turned the knob. It was open and the air conditioning
was switched off.
He smiled, guessing how she must be staying with his son at the moment.
Kaleb bathed and changed into his pajamas before making his way to Liam’s room. Only then did he find Scarlett, embracing
Liam as they rested on his bed.
Walking to the side where Liam slept, he leaned over and pecked his cheek. He whispered, “Love you, Liam. Sleep tight.”
He sat on the edge of the bed, facing the headboard and cherishing the view. The way Scarlett held Liam i n her arms, so
protectively and lovingly, warmed his heart. He swore he found the one.
A smirk formed on his face, seeing how she was wearing a pooh bear t–shirt dress to sleep. ‘She really likes Mister Pooh.’
Soon, his eyes landed on Scarlett‘s full lips. He wound up gulping, just thinking of what he could do with them against his own
rims. He exhaled, shaking his head. If he was the old Kaleb Wright, he would kiss her outright, not thinking of consequences, but
time changed him. Liam changed him.
Now, he was wiser. Now, he saw beauty beyond what was visible. The beauty that he needed was right in front of him. She was
the one he had been waiting for.
“Mmmm.” He heard Scarlett moan in her sleep and he swore, it was so inviting.
Noticing how her hair fell into her face, he reached for her cheek, gently tracing the softness of her skin before pushing back the
strands of hair behind her ear.
“Mmmm.“ Another moan left Scarlett‘s lips, but this time, her eyes also fluttered open. “Kaleb?”
“Hey,” he said with a sexy smile.
Barely a whisper, Scarlett asked, “What time is it?”
“It’s one in the morning. You should go to sleep –“
“No, I need to talk to you about something.” Scarlett carefully got up. She pecked on Liam’s head before delicately laying him flat
on the bed, his head against the pillow.
Kaleb and Scarlett made their way to the living room for a chat. Kaleb stretched his long arms on the sofa and his long legs into
the thick carpet on the floor. He pufffed before saying, “Scarlett, I cannot thank you enough for watching over Liam –”
“You often come home this late?” Scarlett asked.
“Many times, yes, but there are few occasions when I return home early. If I need to work at the office, Boris and Liam often stay
with me there,” Kaleb revealed. “Why? Is there something wrong?”
“Kaleb, how much does Liam know about his mother or how she left him?” Scarlett asked outright, surprising Kaleb.
The man wound up taking a deep breath, his chest raised with effort. He averted her gaze and looked down on his lap. He sat up
and leaned down to rest his elbows on his knees. Only then did he reply, “He
knew she left, but we never covered the details. Why do you ask?”
“Because, Kaleb, he asked me not to leave him too... and it wasn‘t just for tonight. It felt like he meant it a s a whole, you know,”
Scarlett said cautiously,
Silence stretched between them as Kaleb practically turned in every direction, reflecting. He groaned, saying, “It was my fault. It
had to do with the last girl I tried to date. Two years ago, my parents suggested I find a suitable mother for Liam. So i befriended
a socialite. She appeared nice to Liam whenever I was around, but little did I know, she was putting ideas in Liam‘s head – that it
was best he find his mother, live with her since we were going to have a family of our own.”
With a heavy sigh, he added, “She made him feel that he would be unwanted should that happen... Apparently, she did not want
to take care of a son that did not belong to her.”
* did not see her again, and that‘s when she got angry at Liam. It was days after I cut contact with her when she came to the
hotel, apparently waiting for Liam to arrive from school. She told him her mother left him and that he was unwanted.”
“What?” Scarlett said, with eyes widening. “How dare she?”
“Exactly,” Kaleb answered.
“I noticed how Liam was affected after that. Even if he was still four years old back then. He is a smart boy, you know. I took him
to see a psychiatrist, and that lasted for a year. I thought he would be fine by now.” Kaleb shook his head, saying, “Anyway.
Thank you, Scarlett, for letting me know.”
Putting a hand on his chest, he revealed, “I do my best to cover for the love of both a mother and a father, but I guess... I guess
I‘m still not enough... If only you would accept my proposal and we both can give him the love he deserves.”
He winked at her and added, “If only... someone here, sitting across from me. Someone with beautiful long straight hair and
espresso eyes, would realize she loves me and Liam, too.”
His eyes sparkled as he resumed, “Just so we are clear, Liam and I are a package. I‘m his father, so if you go falling in love with
my son, you have to love me too.”
“Oh?” Scarlett pursed her lips, and she wound up chuckling, her ears burning. She sheepishly replied, avoiding the topic, “I‘m
sure he knows you love him, but you are a busy man, too. And it‘s not even your fault. I‘m here to help in any way I can.”
Kaleb hissed. He smirked, saying, “Hmmm. Thank you.”
He suggested, “You should take your rest, Scarlett. We can talk tomorrow about the matters of your living conditions, and
potential work... I can stay with Liam tonight.”
“It‘s fine. You must be tired. I can stay with Liam,” Scarlett offered.
“No. I want to stay with him,” Kaleb revealed, but a roguish grin became painted on his face. He suggested, “But if you insist,
however, we can both sleep in his bed. It‘s big enough to accommodate us.“
“Pfft! In a double bed?” She reacted, her face burning after his proposal. One, she would not dare be in the same bed as him.
She worried more about her self–control, being in a bed with a Greek God. Two, Kaleb was not a small man, to begin with. It was
just impossible to stay in the same double size sheets with him, without getting tangled with him. Nope! Not with Liam there too.
“Then, you can stay with Liam. He needs you too,” Scarlett suggested, her face still heating up after his suggestion
They walked back together to the bedroom hallways and said goodbye. Scarlett entered the guest room and Kaleb went inside
Liam’s.
For the next hour, Scarlett tried to sleep, but the images of Kaleb and Liam just kept popping into her head. She already made a
mess of her bed, tossing and turning against the sheets. Despite the commonly known practice of counting sheeps, her mind
kept wandering off to the bedroom, two doors away from her.
She grumbled, getting up. Her hair was a complete mess.
Scarlett decided to check with the two. She convinced herself, “Just check on them. That‘s all. I just wanted to make sure that
Liam is fine.”
After fixing her hair, she made her way to Liam‘s door. Fortunately, it was open. She walked in, finding Kaleb, resting Liam on his
chest while he lay reclined against the headboard with two pillows supporting his back. His eyes were closed, but one of his
hands remained around Liam‘s back.
Liam, on the other hand, had his little arms around Kaleb‘s shoulder, his head resting on his chest.
“Aww,” Softly she said, admiring the sight of the father and son. A smile formed on her face and her eyes twinkled, ‘What do you
know, a hottie and a cutie?‘
Scarlett could tell the little boy was in good sleep. She thought, ‘He probably felt his father’s presence.’
I’ll stay here for a little while,‘ she said to herself, laying next to them, her eyes remained to study the two. She yawned, telling
herself, “Just for a little while.”
The next day, Scarlett felt her pillow was harder than usual and it smelled of a man‘s aftershave. She opened her eyes to the
sight of blue orbs, looking straight at her.
“If you wanted to sleep with me so badly, you should have just said so,” Kaleb said in a sexy bedroom voice. His face was
practically two inches closer to her. ‘Oh, my god!‘ She gulped.
