Chapter Epilogue
After the Awards Mr. Blair brought a man up to me. I learned that he was a former pupil of Mr. Blair’s, and he went by the name Matthew Conner. He was currently enlisted in the Calvary and looking for a mount.
Mr. Blair said that he knew Matthew would take the very best care of Destiny and ride her just the way she had been trained. So, if I was willing, Destiny could be his new mount.
I didn’t want to give her up to anyone. But if it had to be anyone, there could be no one better than someone Mr. Blair trusted.
Before taking her, Matthew asked if I wanted to ride her one last time. I told him no, but would he let me say good-bye?
I wept unashamed into her mane. “I’ll never forget you Destiny. Thank you. Thank you.”
I gave her a treat and kissed her on her whorl in the middle of her forehead.
For the next three days I was in shambles. My family understood and let me alone.
But on the fourth day I bestirred myself and went up to Mr. Blair’s farm. He was working with Nodreth at the time. The gelding was severely scarred from his harsh treatment with Nadia.
Mr. Blair asked if I wanted to help with his training.
And so now I’m working with Nodreth, using lessons Destiny taught me, to help him trust again. He’s slowly coming around.
Destiny taught me that, even if they’re going to be ripped away from you later, it is well worth it to give all that you have to them now. So, I will train each horse with a full love and passion.
I’m Iris Backwood, and I’m a Horsewoman.
