Chapter Chapter Twenty-Eight
UNEDITED
Nathan rushed to his car in the underground parking garage, when he is tapped on the shoulder. He was standing by the diver's side and was just about to open it.
"What the hell do you want?" He nearly snarls when he finds Judd behind him. The second to last person he wanted to see.
Judd put both of his hands in the air. "I don't want any problems. I just came to warn you."
"About what?" It was taking everything he has to keep his composure.
"They want me to kidnap Sabrina somehow." Judd knew they were throwing him to the wolves. They wanted him to get caught or killed, whichever came first. It would be fun for them to watch but, he had his own plan. Cliff sent him with a chaperone, Antonio, he managed to get lost in a crowd and find his cousin.
"Who?"
"Theses guys that I got mixed up with. They want the money I owe them, and they want to try and get it from you, using your wife as ransom."
"Who are they?"
"He's a loan shark/ drug lord that goes by the name Cliff; and he's dangerous. He won't stop until gets what he wants."
Nathan shakes his head in disgust and disbelief. "Why is he coming after my wife, for the money you owe him? If this is an attempt to scare money from me, it's not going to work."
"Because your mother went back on our deal when you and Sabrina got back together. They don't care how they get it, they just want their money."
"For fuck sake. What the fuck were you doing getting mixed up with them? He runs fingers through his hair.
"Does it matter right now?"
"I should fucking kill you," Nathan mutters.
He then pulls out his phone, hit's a few buttons, and puts it to his ear.
Bang! A gun fires off. Nathan collapses instantly onto his stomach.
Judd glances around afraid for his life. He should run. He should and run and fast, but instead, he stoops low and shakes his cousin's lifeless body. "Nathan?" Click...click...click. The sound of Cliff's shoes echoes off the walls as he appears from nowhere with his two main men, Antonio and Carlos. "Fuck." He growls Judd swallows and stands back up nervously.
Cliff begins to pace back and forth in front of him whiles waving around a silver pistol "Look what you've made me do!" He barks.
Antonio walks over and puts his arm around Judd's neck. "Miss me?" He smiles.
Judd swallows. "What are you going to do to me?"
"Fucking Nathan Alden." Cliff laughs in disbelief. "Kill, fucking, Nathan Alden. You..." He points his gun at Judd. "Fucking made me." He points the gun back to himself. "Kill fucking Nathan Alden. Did you really think we weren't going to find you?" He points the gun back at Judd and then cocks it back. " Better question, You ready to die?"
"Hmm..." Nathan moans.
Everyone's eyes dart towards him.
Cliff notices his fingers moving slightly and panics. In one swift motion, he shifts the gun and fires another shot into Nathan's back. Blood began leaking from under him.
"Fuck!" He Shouts. He then points the gun back at Judd. "You know what, for this; I won't kill you. I will take something equal in value. He smirks, and without looking away from Judd's eyes, points the gun at his knee and pulls the trigger. "Ahhh." He cries out and falls to the ground in agony.
Cliff then puts one of his feet on his chest, and the other, he uses to pin down Judd's wrist. He points the gun at his elbow and puts the bullet in it. "Now you live the rest of your life without a fucking leg and arm."
Sabrina covered her ears as the blaring noise of sirens zooms past. The roads were crazy with people and unfortunately for her, the car wasn't moving. None of the cars on the road were moving. This entire part of the city was in dead-stop traffic.
She uncovers her ears and blows out a long breath when the sounds get far enough. This chaos had to be because of Nathan's interview.
She gets out her phone and calls him hoping he was done but it rang out. She hits messages and sends a text. "When you are out of your interview please call me."-sent.
Half-hour later, no reply, and she couldn't make it down the street the studio was located on. The road was blocked by police, fire trucks, and two ambulances. What the hell was going on?
Her driver was directed away from the street the studio was located on by a cop, and onto another street filled with traffic. She pulls out her phone and tries to call her husband again. Still, no answer.
With nowhere to go and the honking of the cars beginning to annoy her, she decides to turn back.
Just as the car finally pulled onto the main road, they were stopped again so an ambulance could drive past.
Someone must have gotten hurt. She thinks to herself. She then looks down at her phone. "It couldn't be Nathan." She calls again.
This time, it doesn't go to voicemail. The roaring sirens that just passed her, reappears on the other end. "Nathan?"
"No ma'am." It was a woman's voice. "My name is Rebecca Heart, I'm an EMT presently riding in the back of an ambulance with your husband. I'm answering his phone because he has been shot and is being taken to Brentwood Vally Hospital." "Oh god." Sabrina holds onto her heart.
"Don't panic. Please come to the hospital as soon as you can. Your husband will need you. I have to go now." The phone goes silent.
Tears fell on her lap. "Go to Bentwood Vally Hospital." She orders her driver and then calls Selma to relieve Clarissa from Jasmine's duty.
At the hospital, no one was telling her anything. They wouldn't even let her in near him. She waited over an hour before a doctor rushed to speak to her. "Mrs. Alden."
"Yes." She jolts up from her seat in the waiting room.
The doctor pulls her aside and very quickly gave her a rundown of what they have uncovered.
"He is stable but critical. We have spent the last couple of hours trying to get him in stable condition actual. He has flatlined twice and has lost a tremendous amount of blood.
Her eyes well up."
"He was shot twice, both times in his upper-back. We are pumping blood back into his body but needs surgery immediately. We need you to give us signed permission for the go-head. "Of course anything." She wipes her eyes.
He hurries her to a nearby desk and asks the nurse to pass a form and a pen. "You also have to know that one of the bullets is very close to his spine. There is a chance he may be paralyzed." "Okay." She signs the forms and like a zombie and walks back to the waiting room. How was anyone supposed to take that?"
When she arrived, she was met with a sight for her sore eyes. Nathan's sisters and Jacob were there waiting. She was so worried she had forgotten to think about them. However now she was grateful for their presence. "Sabrina." Baylee gets up from her seat, and rushes in front of her."He's going to be okay right?"
Jacob and Clarissa approached her also wanting an answer to Baylee's question.
"What's going on? Have the doctors told you anything?" Jacob sticks his hand in his jeans pocket.
"They won't tell us anything. They didn't even want to let us upstairs." Clarissa pleads for Sabrina to say something. "On the news, they're saying he was shot twice in the back. Is that true?" Sabrina's throat was genuinely hoarse and in pain from her violent crying. She sniffles and nods in reply. "He...I... the doctor said...he is in critical condition, and in the operating room."
Jacob mutters a curse, sit back down, puts his elbows on his knees.
All three girls put their arms around each other and hugged for quite some time while in prayer. They needed each other more than ever.
The seconds turned to minutes, and minutes turned to hours; and there was still no word on Nathan's surgery. They all stood shut and dwelled in their own thoughts.
"I watched the interview he did." Baylee tries to muster a smile at Sabrina. "He's sweet. I can't believe he did that. I can't believe I just said that."
None of them could offer a real chuckle.
"And I can't believe my mother." Baylee continues. "If I didn't know my grandparents, I would wonder if she was a seed of a demon."
"Baylee," Clarissa warns. "This isn't a joke. Don't you think you talk a little too much sometimes." The moment it came flying out of her mouth, she regretted it. "I'm sorry. Excuse me." She runs into the hallway. Jacob quickly runs after her. He looks left then right, and there she about was 15 ft away in front of a room that states Ex-Ray. She covered her face and was crying.
He steps slowly nearer her until he's directly behind her. He reaches and grasps her shoulders.
"Don't Jacob." She knew it was him.
He doesn't listen and turns her slowly. "He's going to be okay." He assures her once their eyes meet.
Feeling weak and defeated, she sticks her head in that familiar place on his chest. "How did all of this happen? Sabrina and Nathan, you and I, my mother and father; I don't understand..."
He wraps his arm around her. "I don't know." He breaths. "But somehow we're going to get through it all."
The echo of footsteps interrupts them. They break apart and look at a male doctor headed into the waiting room. "We should go." Clarissa leads the way.
In the waiting room, Sabrina crossed her arms and watches the doctor worriedly.
"Mrs. Alden."
"Yes. Is he okay?"
"The surgery was successful."
Everyone in the room sighs in relief.
"But he's not out of danger yet. He is in a deep sleep, and we're hoping that he will wake soon, maybe a week."
"Hoping?"
The doc nodes.
"What if he doesn't wake in a week?" She asks.
"The longer he stays asleep, the less likely it is that he will wake."
At this moment she had no time to think negatively. "What are his odds?"
"I would say, roughly around sixty percent. For now, he has to stay in the intensive care unit. We may know more in a few days."
"Can we see him?"
"Yes of course. He's allowed one visitor at a time. He puts one of his hands on her shoulder. "We're going to do everything possible and to the best of our ability, to save your husband, Mrs. Alden." "Thank you, Doctor."
After the doctor is gone, she finds out from a nurse what room he was in. "Room 407
Finally, she was going to see her husband, but then she looked around. Clarissa, Baylee, and Jacob were also waiting to see him. "You all go first. I won't be leaving, so I'll wait."
So first in went Jacob, who was fast. Then Clarissa. and Baylee, who both came out with tears. After waiting impatiently, for what felt like forever, it was finally her turn.
Immediately upon seeing him she kisses his cheeks, forehead, nose, lips, everywhere. "Oh, Nathan." She cries."Who did this to you?" They had him laying on his side, wrapped in bandages, had iv in his arms, and a tube in his throat.
