Chapter 22
UNEDITED
A couple of nights later when Nathan arrived home from work, Sabrina had baby vomit all over her and left Jasmine with him so she could take a shower. They haven't spent any time together since he's been back full swing into his busy schedule, so she makes her shower quick wanting to spend some time with him.
Instead, she was greeted by an unwanted surprise. Vivian was standing in the living-room with Jasmine in her arms and Nathan in front of her.
"Thank you for letting me see her." Vivian gazes down at Jasmine's confused face.
Nathan had his hands the pockets of his beige suit and only replies with only a nod of his head.
Sabrina folds her arms and leans up against the wall between the kitchen and the living room. It didn't upset her that Vivian was holding Jasmine. It was inevitable. She just wished that she could feel more comfortable with it though. "Hi, Jasmine. I'm your grandma." Vivian gently rocks her granddaughter and does a little dance around the living room.
Nathan looks away from them and spots her. He comes close near her and puts his palm on her center lower back. "I hope you're not upset." He speaks close to her ear.
"No." She shakes her head and keeps looking at Vivian.
He didn't believe her. "Hey." He puts his other hand on her waist, pulls her so she was facing him, and keeps them there. "I know what she said was out of line, but she's going to love Jasmine. And Jasmine shouldn't be denied love from anyone because of indifferences or childishness."
"I know." She unfolds her arms, trails them up his biceps, and then settles them on his shoulders. "I'll be civil."
He smiles lightly and searches her face before leaning in kissing her shoulder. "I can't wait to come to bed tonight." She blushes.
"Nathan," Vivian calls.
When they both look over. Nathan was slower than Sabrina.
"Can I have her for a little bit?"
They both look at each other. Yes, it was inevitable, but Jasmine with her all alone made her uneasy.
"I want to call my friends on a Video call and show off with my new granddaughter."
Sabrina pulls away from Nathan and crosses her arms again. She had no proof that she couldn't trust Vivian. Just her suspicions. She knew overall that Vivian wouldn't hurt Jasmine but that didn't stop the uneasiness. "It's okay with me if it's okay with Sabrina." He shoves his hands back in his pocket.
"You can come upstairs and get her anytime you want." Vivian pleads.
"I guess it's okay. She needs to eat again at 9:30."
"Okay." Vivian smiles.
Sabrina packs up a small bag and hands it to her mother-in-law. "Have fun with grandma." She kisses Jasmine's forehead.
Once they leave, she turns around from seeing them out, and Nathan's eyes were glued to his phone. She was freaking out about Jasmine being gone and he was as usual. He trusted his mother but she didn't. She watches as stood In front of the white three-piece sectional concentrating really hard.
She had an idea to take his phone and toss it across the room, making him pay attention to her. Instead, She tosses out emotions and leads with rationalization. She intended to get his full attention but probably not maybe so dramatically. She moves in front of him and just as she reaches her hand out to cover his phone, he grabs it, softy.
"One-second sweetheart." He doesn't let go. He holds onto her hands and continues with whatever he's doing. Then, Unexpectedly, he brings it to his lips. She felt a tingly sensation run up and down her arm.
How did he know what she was going to do while his eyes were magnetized to his phone? She had no clue.
After a few moments, he puts his phone in his pocket, grabs her other hand, and puts them both around his neck. He surprises her when he drops his hands down to her waist and hauls her up against his chest for a hug.
They both let out a breath of stress and inhaled relief in each other's scent. She couldn't remember the last time they just hugged.
The bell by the front door rings off and startles her. "Must be the laundry I sent down earlier." She assumes.
Nathan reluctantly releases her and moves near the door. "My assistant." He replies. "Send her up." He states into the intercom, then opens the coat closet that was near the door. "I have a few last-minute things that came up. We need to work through the night." He pulls out a small green handbag.
"Yours?" Sabrina points to the bag and then folds her arms.
"Genevieve's." He answers.
"Genevieve?"
"Jill left to be a mother. Genevieve is her replacement." He clarifies.
The doorbell rang just she was going to ask why he has her purse.
He opens the door... She didn't look like she was dressed for work. Her skirt too short, her shirt to tight. "Hello." Sabrina smiles and extends her arms. "I'm Sabrina." Who the hell was she to judge her based on her clothes?
"Mrs. Alden." She greets back. "Very nice to meet you." She stands in the doorway for a few moments too long.
"Here." Nathan's hands Genevieve her the purse. "Your bag."
"Thank you, sir." She takes it.
"Come in." Sabrina gestures for her to enter.
I'll just wait in the office." She excuses herself politely and limps through the kitchen uncomfortably.
Well, she's definitely been here before. "Nathan." She started the beginning of a sentence only to be cut off by a kiss on the forehead.
"I have a lot of work to do. Get rest." His little way of letting her know not to wait up before he left her standing in the living room alone.
He was so hot and cold and it was beginning to frustrate her. He said that he loved her but still he was distant and different. She didn't know what to do to make things any better. Could they really make this work? She was beginning to question everything. She was trying to have understanding with his work schedule but the old Nathan put nothing in front of her. He made time for her, he called, he canceled meetings, he gave her his undivided attention when she was in the room. No, she didn't expect him to do that all the time but, it just feels like he was trying to put distance between them and she couldn't understand why.
She goes into the kitchen and pulls open the oven to check for the dinner plate she leaves for him every night. It didn't surprise her that it was still there. She lets out a breath and grabs the plate and drink. He had to eat. Once she reaches the office door she knocks lightly and waits for a reply.
"Come in." He answers sounding somewhat distracted.
She opens the door to see him sitting at his desk and Genevieve standing at the side. The room was a lot smaller than his offices before but still a decent size.
Genevieve moves away and goes to the black leather sofa that was lined with papers in the corner of the room.
Nathan looks away from his computer. "You need something, Sweetheart?"
"Just for you to eat your dinner." She moves around the desk places the plate and a glass of iced tea in front of him
He didn't look at the plate. He grabs onto one of her hands and pulls her closer as he stands up. Before she knew it he placed a soft kiss on her lips. "Thank you." He whispers.
"You're welcome." She pulls herself away and takes a step towards the door.
As Sabrina leaves the office she glances at Genevieve and notices that she looked hurt. Her eyes were hiding nothing. It was definitely wasn't just disappointment. Why would she be hurt unless there was something there?
A bit later, she stands in the living room staring out the window down at the city. Nathan wouldn't sleep with one of his employees, would he? Could he be sleeping with her now? She hated feeling so insecure but he was so distant sometimes. About an hour later she retrieved Jasmine from her Mother-in-law and held her as she watched a late-night romantic comedy on the recliner. She was glad that she did. She was able to get her mind away from her own drama. Around midnight she fed Jasmine one more time and went to bed.
Now that the movie was over she had nothing left to think about but Nathan and Genevieve in that office alone together. The image of her face just kept appearing. Another hour later she fell asleep, but then another hour later she woke as soon as the room door opened.
Nathan did his usual thing. Change, jump in for a quick shower, and came onto the bed.
"Why did you have her purse?" She asks.
"Why are you awake?" He returns.
She sits herself up and hits a switch near the bed to turn the lights on.
"I couldn't sleep." She answers him. "Are you going to answer me?" She needed to know. She couldn't stop wondering.
By this time he scooted close to her, laid down with his arm behind his head and closes his eyes. "Genevieve broke her ankle a couple of weeks ago. She can't drive her own car so she's using one of mine." He stops.
"Soo..." She pushes him to continue.
"She left her bag in the car."
Okay so that would explain the purse and her limp, but what about the pain in her eyes? She was going to just flat out ask him. If she didn't she was going to go crazy.
"Is something happening between the two of you?"
"What?" His closed eyes shoot aimed at her with outrage. "Are you kidding me?"
"Why would I kid?"
"She forgets her purse and suddenly I'm a cheater?"
"It's not about the purse. It's about the looks in her eyes when I was in your office. She was hurt when you kissed me and I don't understand what right she has to even be hurt, to begin with."
They could hear each other blink it became so quiet.
"Nathan?"
"I've never had sex with her." He fluffs his pillow and turns on his side so his back was facing her. "I'm exhausted, Sabrina."
"You just almost did?" She assumes.
He doesn't reply again.
She wanted to let him sleep but he was being too vague.
"What happened between the two of you?" She pressures him for more info. "Did you kiss her?"
"No..." He yells as he sits up and leans against the headboard in frustration. "Look." He looks her in the eyes. "I honestly may have let her believe that there could be something more than a working relationship, but I have never let it cross the lines of one. It was before we got back together."
"Why is she still working with you if you know she's pining for you?"
"She is great at her job."
"Of course she is. Her job is pleasing you."
"Sabrina." He warns.
She greets her teeth, hits the lights off, and lays down with her back facing him. She hears him fluffing his pillow and then settles himself. She felt so angry about a lot of things she wanted to ask and needed to know but it was probably best they finish this conversation in daylight hours. Then, she feels his arm come around her waist. "I will have her transferred to another department as someone else's assistant."
"You should have done that the moment your relationship with her changed from employee to potential mate." She fires back.
"Nothing happened. He maintained his innocence as he pulls her closer.
She let him and felt as his body very quickly became heavy. Her mind couldn't rest. He changed and it was starting to bother her. He definitely didn't treat her the same nor did he look at her the same. Was this as good as it got? Did she make a mistake by lying to him? He did tell her that he changed and things wouldn't be the same and although she knew that, she still was waiting for him to be the person he was. At that moment, she realized that is what she was really waiting for. She knew better, he told her better than to expect the same, Nathan. She wasn't understanding the severity of it. She began to realize how unhappy she is. The only thing that gave her joy was her daughter. Her husband was closed off and distant. She tried to understand him, she could see and feel that he loved her but he was also hurt.
"Oh my god, he's hurt." She speaks into the darkness. It hit her like a punch in the gut. By lying to him and telling him that she cheated on him she gave him pain that will forever torment him. A memory that doesn't exist. This was it. The moment she knew she made a mistake.
