Chapter His Knees 72

I was still puzzled as to why Carlos had invited me to this dinner. He was usually so guarded, so when he called and insisted I come along, my curiosity couldn't help but get the better of me. I tried asking him what this was all about, but, as expected, he was evasive. His nonchalant attitude made me all the more suspicious, but I let it go for the time being.
He'd never invited me to something like this before, and while we'd spent time together in different circumstances, this felt different. I wondered what was so special about this evening. Was there something going on that he didn't want me to know about yet? His secrecy was starting to make me think there was more at play here than just a casual dinner.
As I got ready, my mind kept racing. I sighed, knowing that pushing him for answers would be futile, Carlos was good at keeping things close to the chest, and no matter how many times I asked, I knew he wouldn't tell me until he was ready, Maybe tonight would shed some light on the mysteries surrounding him, or maybe it would leave me with more questions than answers. Either way, I couldn't deny my excitement at seeing what was ahead.
I dressed up for the evening, choosing something simple yet elegant. As I made my way downstairs to meet him, I could feel the slight flutter of anticipation in my chest. When I stepped outside, I was greeted by a sight I hadn't expected-a sleek limousine parked right in front of the house. A limo? My jaw almost dropped. People around the neighborhood were stopping to take pictures of it as if it were some celebrity's ride. Carlos, however, didn't seem surprised in the least. He casually walked up to the car, opened the door, and gestured for me to get in, his expression calm as if this was completely normal.
I couldn't help but feel a little out of place as I stepped into the plush interior of the limousine. "Who are you?" I thought silently, glancing over at him. This wasn't the Carlos I had come to know. His quiet, modest demeanor didn't match the level of wealth this car represented. And then I noticed what he was wearing. He was

impeccably dressed tonight, more so than I'd ever seen him. His suit was tailored to perfection, and his cufflinks caught my eye immediately.
I blinked as I realized something. "Those cufflinks... they're from the same jewelry collection as my earrings." I hadn't planned to say it out loud, but the thought escaped me.
Carlos barely glanced at them. "Maybe. The staff at PACK probably prepared them. I didn't pay attention," he replied coolly, brushing it off as if it meant nothing.
I raised an eyebrow, slightly disappointed in his indifferent response. But before I could dwell on it, Tina, my wolf, chimed in, "Carlos's wolf said he was very happy." That took me by surprise, and I smiled inwardly. Maybe he wasn't as unaffected as he seemed.

As we arrived, my breath caught in my throat. The venue was breathtaking-more like a palace than a banquet hall.

Chandeliers sparkled overhead, and marble pillars gleamed in the soft, ambient light. Everything was designed to impress, and the grandeur left me feeling slightly overwhelmed. The atmosphere carried a sense of importance, as if we had stepped into a world far removed from our own.
The moment we stepped out of the limousine, I noticed the soldiers standing guard at the entrance. They were from the Alpha King's regiment. My surprise must have shown on my face because Carlos glanced at me and said, "Yes, there are royal family members here tonight."
I raised an eyebrow in mock surprise. "Wow, I've never been to a party with royalty before," I joked, trying to lighten the mood, though deep down, I was a bit
nervous.
Carlos, as usual, remained composed. "You'll do just fine," he said, his tone reassuring but distant.
As we walked in, I felt eyes on me. A lot of eyes. At first, I tried to ignore it, but as

the evening went on, it became impossible to pretend I wasn't being watched.
People were looking at me as if I were something extraordinary, though I had no idea why. I shifted uncomfortably, trying to appear calm. "Why is everyone staring at me?" I whispered to Carlos.
"Relax," he said, his voice soothing, though not giving me any real answers. I sensed a lot of curiosity in the crowd, but no one dared to approach me. It was as if they were waiting for something.
I started to wonder-who was Carlos? Why were people so cautious around him? Why did they seem to respect him, even fear him? The more time I spent with him, the more I realized how little I knew about his life.
