Chapter 70
The masked soldiers from Sigmund’s camp were in their human suits, but now upon hearing the call of war from our team they transformed to wolf formation. My Lycan was in full dress standing next to the very boulder that marked part of the agility course. In front me waved a red flag; pity this was the red flag of bloodshed. Sigmund stayed in human form as I heard the forest floor vibrate with the pounding force of persistent soldiers ready to defend the region of Mount Hunter.
“Let the war game begin my dear.” Sigmund leered as I reeled back from his yellow teeth opening up a paw with my long claws. I scraped them against the rock sharpening them for his face. I had no time to strike as Archer charged forward with a stick of light - wait it was a javelin with fire latched on the end of it. War cry’s rumbled through the forest as Grant led with him. She had a bow and arrow hitched over her shoulder and she dropped it down as one of the Beartown wolves charged. Steady hands were a penchant of hers as let the arrow release like a rubberband to its target hitting one of Beartown’s wolves.
“You bitch!” Sigmund morphed then and ran at her on ground, but was met with by Clive - I recognized that golden fur anywhere, his teeth biting into Sigmund’s neck. Other wolves on the outer collided and clashed in the sky as some of the released animals watched with their beaded eyes behind the forest scrub. I saw Archer pick up his fire stick and let it fly in Sigmund’s direction.
Sigmund flattened his body down and ran under the fire stick charging forward to Mathew who was still in human form, but had a fire stick in his hand as well. He put the stick out on Sigmund’s back as I stood up high on the boulder overseeing the madness in the clearing. I watched from afar as Sigmund yelped in pain, but just as quickly as his cries haunted the forest corridor was as quickly as he danced back on his feet launching an attack on two wolves who fenced him in. Low growls insisted as their paws padded around Sigmund who dropped his heavy tail and appeared to sit in the middle of them. The move he made shocked me.
Meanwhile a separate battle brewed on the west side of the clearing including Clive, Gina, and Zion. All of whom I’d had my fair few clashes with. One jab forward and a nip, a nip back. Both sides were going tit for tat in bites trying to wear the other down. In the middle Thelma was up against a much bigger wolf, one twice her size - jet black in color from Beartown and she was losing the battle. I howled loudly ready to jump in and assist her. Nobody would hurt my best friend, I would rip the flesh off their backs leaving only the bare bones. Leaping from the rock I landed on solid ground joining the fray. Now it was the two of us. Amber eyes illuminated as my Lycan enveloped Thelma in a pulsating ray of light. Inside I was shocked as I didn’t know my Lycan could wrap another in its light.
This will give her extra power. Leave her. You have another battle on the right. My Lycan spoke as I poked Thelma with my snout. The jet black wolf with jade green pupils whimpered some as he retreated and Thelma tackled the wolf. A loud crack of bones breaking sated me as I helped a smaller pack of our wolves backed into a corner on the southern end of the clearing. The same eclipses of wolves twice the size of ours honed in on two of the newest trainees. Each one of them had their tails between their legs and were scared to attack.
The Beartowners knew this, our two Mount Hunter pack mates were lightweight, not much weight on them, champagne colored like Clive and their snouts were dripping with nervous sweat from being in their first battle. One of them already had a large open wound on its back as the blood slid down its side. Standing close enough I could hear the breath of the wolf laboring for breath. I spoke to it through mindlink. The only way our wolves would get stronger is if they fought with honor and tested their skills.
Use your agility. Wear them out. Confuse them, by trotting around them both in a circle. Both of them are too heavy. Aim for their feet and tails. Bite their tails. Dart in and out like flies. Pests.
I lent them my wisdom as a wolf warrior and watched both them execute my instructions to the letter. Two other wolves joined in the nipping party circling, howling in a circus with my Lycan being the ringleader. One by one the Beartown wolves gnashed and thrashed at the air, our wolves were too swift and cunning to be touched by them. If it was to be compared to a human fight, it was like a heavyweight trying to hit a welterweight champion. If the heavyweights got a paw swipe in, it might have knocked one of ours for six, but our team was too quick. Apparently in the short time I’d trained them on agility and darting in and out of spaces they’d learned and applied my techniques, they only needed a little coaxing.
Three wolves went to work on these large wolves as I moved into the next space where I was needed. I paired up with Thelma who had defeated the other wolf. Blood stained her long incisors as I dipped my head in honor of her.
Job well done my friend.
Thank you for the energy boost that was spectacular.
Of course. I can’t leave you to some giant furball.
Watch out Vera! Right side, high! I faced up to see Sigmund with his front paws outstretched ready to claw. Angling my body away from him I moved to the side and bit him on the back. He yelped as Archer tugged his back leg away. I found it hard even in wolf form to see Archer fighting on behalf of me. I had to remember he put himself in the awkward position in the first place.
Grant was having none of it and bumped her body against Sigmund setting him back several paces. Complications surfaced as the firesticks caught on fire and arid smoke clouded the clearing like the smoke from a hookah. Wafting in and out I howled to remove the smoke from my lungs. My eyes were smarting from the pain, but I cross examined the field seeing where my Lycan was needed next.
Dense clouds of ashen cloud mixed in my lungs making my Lycan cough. Another element from the environment unforeseen had been added to the mix. Crackling of trees burning and the scent of pine needles toasting invaded my veins and my nostrils. Someone would need to get some water to the forest otherwise it would burn.
The fire will contain itself. It’s being put out don’t worry. You’re safe. Watch through the smoke. Sigmund is lurking. My Lycan warned me of his arrival, but already a catastrophe felt like it was coming. Sigmund had recovered from the bump Grant gave him and was taking his time feeling my Lycan out. My lungs were becoming consumed by the smoke, anxiety making me want to cough, but I couldn’t. The smoke was zapping me of energy and it was as if I was coughing up a furball. A number of wolves were near a tree not far in the distance stamping it out and dirt was flying in the air I assumed they were trying to temper mother nature. It was a clumsy mistake to bring the fire torches and not put them out, another dangerous element to hinder the fight.
Grant covered me and slunk in beside me starting in with mindlink. End him. This is your chance at vengeance Vera. He killed our parents. Finish him off and I’ll take care of the rest. We’ve got most of them.
Thank you. As I said it I didn’t know if thanking her for leaving me with the man responsible for the traumatic events that unfolded like dominoes was the best response. Chaos and a desperate fight to hold ground carried on around me.
Sigmund growled low as Grant stood in the middle of the field and howled loudly as dusk peppered the sky with candy pink clouds and an apricot tinged skyline. Sigmund dug low and stared up at me from under his weaving movements each one bringing my adversary closer to me. My peripheral vision paralleled my hypersensitivity. I could see everything in the clearing indirectly. Grant’s form stood cemented in stillness as she watched my Lycan pose for a moment. It was as if I had a chance to time travel back in time, but this time better equipped for what was in front of me. Shaky legs made me panic as my wolf heart beat loud and true. Sigmund could sense the weakness in me as I struggled to keep the memory out of my mother being crunched and broken down like a lego car five years ago. It was one of those submarine memories that resurfaced at the worst times, but my Lycan spoke words of encouragement into my ear.
Don’t show weakness, stand tall. End it once and for all. Don’t show weakness. Your mother and father would be proud. You can do it Vera. We will end this together.
His teeth dripped ready to produce the same bone crunching effect, but this was a showdown Sigmund was ill equipped for.
The semi arc we were assessing one another in widened as my Lycan bared its teeth and the shine of my golden eyes glowed filling my whole body with warmth. I could see the outside of my aura as the ground lit up. My Lycan was blessing me with an energy surge that felt like electricity volts invading every cell in my body. Naturally this got on Sigmund’s nerves. He lunged to bite my leg. My jaws were wide open and captured a hunk of his flesh. It was almost as if Sigmund jumped right into my jaw, but it was more likely my Lycan timed the leap and bit in the right direction. I flung Sigmund to the ground ready for the next round and he came like a steam train pinning my Lycan to the ground. I wrestled as we bit one another and rolled through the mud. I could hear the persistence of Grant through mindlink.
Keep going Vera. Get him. He has a weak mid section. He’s an out of shape wolf, go for the center. No. Not there.
With all Grant’s coaching it was starting to get on my nerves. Throughout the clashing and banging of our bodies I decided it would be best for Grant to take over the reigns and take Sigmund out. I retreated getting enough distance from Sigmund as he did the same. I trotted closer to Grant who had reinstated herself as a human. She had picked up a torch and was helping close in on all the firesticks. Easier to pick up in human form even though the younger wolves in the pack displayed enough common sense to bury the fire with danger.
Oddly enough my Lycan had come out unscathed, there were no wounds on my body and I wondered if it was the light-filled aura penetrating around my body.
I mindlinked with Grant who had the fire covered. You should finish Sigmund. It will help the pack respect you as the new alpha. You’re a female, so it’s a new leadership direction. Come. You finish Sigmund.
It would be my pleasure. Are you sure you don’t want to do it? I owe you.
Sigmund had his eyes solely focused on me and planned to run in and come at me again off guard. For the most part my Lycan played defensively, but this time I lunged leaping high springing from my hind legs with a graceful power and landing on Sigmund’s head as I scruffed him by the neck and flung him towards Grant.
All yours. I said to her via mindlink. It was the right thing to do and my Lycan approved.
Good and brave decision. She will be a fine leader for the pack. Well done Vera, your growth has been exponential.
