Chapter 38 Speak To Me Now
"What's up with you?" Colin knew that Sophia was always quiet. But there was something wrong with her today. She was not her usual self.
Sophia hadn't expected Colin to continue asking. She had a quick look at Wade to see if he was listening. Satisfied that he was not, Sophia turned to Colin. Pointing at Wade, she reminded Colin not to say anything that was unsuitable.
Colin understood what she was trying to say. However, he was displeased, "So you really want to keep our marriage a secret?"
In Z country only two other people knew of their relationship status, Herring, and Wade.
As Colin's Chief Secretary and his Personal Secretary, Wade knew many things about Colin.
Especially an important matter such as his marriage.
When Sophia figured out what Colin was about to say, she tried to stop him, but in vain. Since Wade had heard, she didn't have to hide anymore. "Colin, you were the one who explicitly asked me to keep our marriage a secret, remember?"
Colin thought for a while. He remembered instructing her not to tell anyone about their marriage. He quibbled anyway, "But I didn't want you to be this thorough and deliberate."
Since Mr. Ji is here, you don't need me. I'm gonna get off here."
"I won't allow that!" Colin took out a remote control and locked all the doors and windows.
Sophia was speechless. She closed her eyes and leaned against the back of the rear seat. "Sophia Lo! Open your eyes! Look at me and talk!" Colin ordered.
Wade, "......"
Sophia, "......"
Sophia ignored him and remained silent. Colin was unreasonable. There was nothing to talk about with him.
Colin was utterly discomfited when he saw her so indifferent. He pinched her cheeks and said, "Soapy! I order you to speak to me now!"
Sophia pulled his fingers away and articulated, "I'm sorry, Mr. Li, you must've confused me with someone else. I'm not Soapy."
Colin was about to speak, but Sophia stopped him and continued, "If you call me Soapy once more, I'll tell everyone that we're married. I'm going to tell them that the great Mr. Colin Li married a low born woman!"
Colin suddenly smiled, "So what?"
Sophia looked at Colin in disbelief. What was wrong was him? At the start of their marriage, he had told her, no, he had warned her that she mustn't say a word to others. And now, he didn't care whether she would tell others?
She made a cautious attempt. "Does she know?"
From the moment she heard Colin speaking with a woman on the phone, Sophia had believed that Colin was talking with someone he liked. She assumed that the reason Colin wanted to keep their marriage a secret was because he didn't want his love to know about them.
"Who? Who knows what?" Colin shot Sophia a confused look.
"Your lover. Does she know that you're already married?"
Colin felt a bit frustrated. When had he told Sophia that he had a lover?
"What are you talking about! Just shut up!" Colin sat up straight and ignored her.
Once in a while, everyone enjoys doing the opposite of what he or she's been told. When Colin didn't want her to talk, Sophia suddenly had more interest in talking to him. "Why are you unhappy? Was she jealous?"
Colin's silence drove Sophia's imagination to work overtime.
"Tell her then. You can tell her about our fake marriage, and that we are going to get divorced eventually. And most importantly, that we haven't 'consummated' our marriage yet. Many women take that part very seriously." Sophia had scooted close to Colin. She was whispering as she didn't want Wade to hear the word 'consummated.'
She didn't want to be an obstacle between Colin and his love.
She thought it would be better if Colin married Leila. They looked so perfect when they stood together. And they'd known each other since childhood. Their match was perfect since they were both from wealthy families. They would make a great couple.
But. Why did she feel like her heart was breaking? And why couldn't she breathe?
Regardless of the outraged look on Colin's face, Sophia pointed at the window, "Roll that down, please. I need some air."
"Suffocate then!" It seemed to be fitting punishment for her delusions!
Sophia's mouth twitched. She murmured, "As if you would get away with it if I suffocated."
"Didn't I fulfill my responsibility by marrying you?"
"......" He was so like a dog, with his sharp nose and sharp ears.
Silence washed over the car. Wade smiled. They really did bicker like an old married couple.
When the car stopped in front of a luxurious hotel, Sophia and Colin got off.
Soon after, the car left. Sophia turned to look and wondered why Mr. Ji didn't come in with them. Was he just driving them here?
Sophia followed Colin into the lobby. A waiter greeted them and led them to the elevator.
The waiter then accompanied them to the last room on the second floor and opened the door for them.
As Sophia and Colin entered the room, their hosts greeted them. "Mr. Li, nice to meet you again!" "Nice to meet you too, Mr. Xu!"
After both parties had greeted each other, Mr. Xu introduced his female secretary to Sophia and Colin.
After they sat down, Mr. Xu called the waiter and placed an order for a few appetizers. Then Colin and Mr. Xu began to speak about subjects that were not related to their business. Sophia couldn't participate in their dialogue. So she smiled and stared at the TV.
A newscast was playing on the screen. Sophia was barely listening. A commercial break, however, drew Sophia's attention.
It was Hugh.
She and Hugh hadn't seen each other for almost three years. They had occasionally written to each other before Sophia's incarceration.
After Dorothy had framed her, Sophia had asked someone to convey to Hugh that she would be unavailable for a while and would not have the time to write to him. Since then, they had been out of touch...
"Is he handsome?" Sophia jumped when she heard a male voice so close to her ear.
She turned to Colin and saw that his eyes were fixed on her angrily. Mr. Xu had excused himself to the bathroom, and his secretary was playing on her cellphone. "Yeah. Hugh is really nice-looking." But not as good as you. She thought.
Hugh was too cold for her, but Colin was just perfect. He looked urbane, and it was rare for him to be serious and cold.
"Since he is so attractive, why weren't you with him then? Why did you choose Payne Tai over him?" Colin taunted Sophia just before gulping down the contents of his glass. Sophia had been in a good mood before he mentioned Payne Tai. After hearing his name, Sophia's smile faded away. "Mr. Li, that's none of your business." "Was Payne better in bed?" Colin lowered his voice, and whispered in Sophia's ear.
Mr. Xu's secretary had looked up from her phone. When she saw Colin whispering to Sophia, she quickly understood their relationship, and looked down at her phone. Sophia grit her teeth. For a minute there, she wanted to throw the table at Colin's face. 000☐☐☐☐☐
