Chapter 5 — Bossing Around

Vincent took two very, very deep breaths before asking Tobin who he was talking to. He was sure that it was Rebecca but decided to make sure before blowing up. "Who was that?" Tobin cleared his throat. "Um... I... What?" Vincent rolled his eyes. Loyalty was a good quality in his world and he admired Tobin for being loyal to Rebecca but in this instance, he would prefer the loyalty be in his favor. "Tobin..." Vincent crossed his arms and glared at the man standing in front of him. "Just tell me. That is an order." Tobin nodded his head. Vincent watched his Adam's apple bob and heard him gulp. "Rebecca." Tobin cringed. She was going to kill him but if he hadn't told Vincent he would have done it in a much more painful way than she could ever think up. "And..."

"She's um... Well you see, she's kind of... a little bit..." Tobin sighed when he noticed Vincent was growing impatient. "Pregnant." Vincent's eyes grew wide. He had thought that was what he heard but, wasn't sure. Now having heard it for sure he was shocked and furious. Which emotion he was feeling more was unclear. Without saying a word, he stormed off.

Tobin scrambled to pull his phone back out of his pocket and quickly dialed Rebecca in order to warn her. "Come on. Come on. Pick up, Bec's." He quickly left her a message before hanging up. He knew this wouldn't end well.

Vincent jumped into his car and slammed the door. After starting the engine, he ran his hands through his hair and took a few deep breaths again. It wasn't working though. He ended up punching the steering wheel several times. Hitting the horn drew the attention of his father's gardener but he didn't care. The only thing he cared about was Rebecca hiding the fact that she had his child growing inside her and didn't tell him. He started his car finally and pulled out of his parents' driveway.

As he drove toward town, he called one of the men that he had placed on Rebecca. "Hey, boss." The man greeted. "Where is she?"

"Just left her place for work, Boss."

"Make sure she doesn't leave once she gets there." He ordered before hanging up and accelerating to get to the hospital before Tobin had a chance to warn her.

Rebecca was already regretting having gone to work. She still didn't feel good and now that she knew exactly why she just wanted to crawl back into bed and think about where her life was headed. "Um... Rebecca, there is a man looking for you," one of the new nurses told her as she walked out of a patient's room. The look on her face told Rebecca this wasn't a normal patient. Rebecca could hear a man yelling and her eyes widened.

"I need to speak with her, right. Now," Vincent was yelling at the poor receptionist.

"Sir. I told you she is with a patient right now." Rebecca walked up behind the women sitting at the desk that Vincent was looking down on.

"Mary. I got it, thank you," she smiled at her before turning to glare at Vincent. He raised his eyebrows at her. If she thought she could be mad at him about anything after what she was hiding from him, she had another thing coming. "Vince. What. Are. You. Doing. Here?" she hissed at him quietly as she pulled him to a corner away from all the eyes that were watching him. No doubt in thanks to his shouting.

"Why the hell didn't you tell me?" he demanded, crossing his arms over his chest. Rebecca furrowed her eyebrows.

"What the hell are you talking about?" she made sure to emphasize the repeated words so he would know she was not impressed by his actions.

"Don't play stupid with me. Is it mine?" Rebecca's eyes grew wide and she raised a hand to her mouth.

"You know?"

"So, it is true..." Vincent stated shaking his head in disbelief. Nodding her head, Rebecca couldn't believe she had been so stupid. She now realized that of course there was a high chance that Vincent would be around Tobin while he was working and that raised the chances that he would overhear their conversation. "Why wouldn't you tell me?"

Rebecca saw a look she had only seen once on the demandingly abrasive man standing in front of her. The first time she had seen it, it disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared. This time, however, the look, that showed some sort of fear, was not fading. "I just found out this morning," she frowned at him. She watched as her words sunk into and Vincent's face morphed to one of shock.

"Really?" Rebecca nodded. "Shit, Rebecca. I should have known," he whispered so only she could hear him.

Rebecca realized what he was implying and grew angry. He really thought she would keep the baby from him? She folded her arms and sent him a glare.

"Don't get mad, please. I already know I'm an asshole," Vincent held his hands up in defense before she had a chance to start to reprimand him. "What time are you done?"

"Ten." Rebecca simply stated. Vincent's eyes widened.

"That's insane. No. I won't have it," he shook his head. Rebecca watched him before letting out a little giggle that drew his attention back to her. "What's so funny?"

"You. Thinking that you can tell me what I can and can't do." Vincent's jaw ticked and he clenched and unclenched his fists. He held his tongue as he studied his face trying to determine if she truly would fight him on this or not. Her arms were crossed across her chest and she had a set glare pointed directly at him. Sighing he ran his hands through his hair one at a time.

"Fine. Do they at least let you get a break for dinner?" Rebecca nodded.

"I get an hour."

"Good. I will be here. We will talk then," Vincent turned and walked away before Rebecca could even agree or disagree. She waved him off even though he couldn't see her. She knew they had to have this conversation she might as well not try and fight him.

Rebecca went back to work. She only had to answer about twenty questions from the nurses and a couple of doctors, about who Vincent was and what he wanted from her. She, of course, didn't give any of them anything juicy. Instead, telling them he was a friend and he had a medical question. Some asked if he was single which she refused to answer because she felt like growling at them each time they asked. Jealousy didn't look good on her and she knew it. Sighing she walked to the nurse's station to tell them she was heading to get some dinner. "He's back," Mary told her pointing to the waiting room to their left. She turned to find Vincent standing there.

"Come on," she mumbled with an eye roll as she walked past him to the cafeteria. Vincent didn't say a word to her the entire elevator ride down which Rebecca was thankful for. She hoped he would be calm and not demanding like he was earlier. She grabbed a sandwich and water from the shelf of a cold case before walking to the checkout counter. She turned around and watched Vincent scrunch his nose up at everything there was to eat. Rolling her eyes, she walked back to stand beside him and watched him bend over the salad bar and look over the toppings. "Are you planning on getting something today? I'm kind of hungry and only have an hour."

"Sorry," he nodded his head in her direction before straitening up and adjusting his suit. "I'm not that hungry anyway," he walked to the counter. "Just her food," he told the girl behind the counter who batted her eyes at him. Rebecca rolled her eyes and stomped to a table in a corner far away from anyone else. "What's wrong?" he asked her as he sat down across from her.

"Nothing," she sighed and took a bite of her food.

"Rebecca. Tell me please."

"Just not used to every female you come into contact with acting like a dog in heat," she scoffed. Vincent's deep laughter drew some attention from people around the dining room. "Shhh," she hit his arm.

"You're jealous and it's cute." Rebecca felt herself blush. If only they could have had this conversation over the phone. "So..." Vincent drew out the word. Rebecca stopped eating and looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "How far along are you?"

"Really? You do remember the party was two months, ago right?" Vincent rubbed the back of his neck and laughed a little.

"Right." He answered realizing now. They looked at each other not saying a word. Rebecca picked at her sandwich but, she had suddenly lost her appetite.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. She wasn't sure he heard her or if she wanted him to.

"What are you sorry for?" He had heard her and was confused.

"Getting pregnant," she shrugged. Vincent whipped his head up.

"Why the hell would you be sorry for that? It's not like you did this on your own. And we love each other so this child was created from that." Vincent was whispering but his words hit Rebecca hard. She was happy that he was okay with this sure but at the same time, she wasn't sure how he wanted this to go. "I, of course, will take care of both of you," he continued dragging Rebecca out of her thoughts. She shook her head.

"No, just the baby. If that is what you want. I won't force anything on you. You can be in his or her life as much or as little as you like. You don't owe me anything though," she rattled off her jumbled thoughts. She made sure to say all the things she felt she was 'supposed to say' but it didn't feel right.

"No. I will take care of you both as I said. I love you. You will move back in with me but, of course, this time it will be permeant." He stated to her as if she had no say in the matter.

"I said no. You don't get to boss me around like I'm one of your men," she shouted before she remembered where she was and looked down at her hands. She started picking at her nails.

"It will be best for you both. I can protect you better there," he told her as he reached for her hands to stop her picking.

"If I remember correctly, you said not being with you would be the safest thing for me," Rebecca stood from her chair. She opened her mouth to say something more but decided against it and walked out of the cafeteria. Vincent stood to follow her when his phone beeped with a message from his brother telling him he was needed at the club.

"Maybe give her time to cool off," he told himself. He sent a message to the men that guarded her to watch her and left the hospital.

Rebecca tried to go back to work but Vincent's words kept floating around in her head. She couldn't believe that he really thought she was just going to say "okay" and move in with him like nothing ever happened.

Sighing she sighed off on the release of a patient and decided to go and speak with her boss. "Jerry. Do you have a minute?" she asked after peeking her head in the door after knocking.

"Sure," he answered waving her in.

"Thanks. Look, I know that this isn't ideal but, I'm just not feeling well right now, do you think you can spare me the rest of the night?" she asked her boss hoping he wouldn't ask any more questions.

"Sure. You have worked hard the last several months and those nearly twenty-four-hour shifts you took last week were bound to catch up with you," he sent her a smile. She returned it before standing up and thanking him before walking to the staff room to get her things and head home.

When she got to her door, she realized that she didn't want to go there. She turned around and knocked on Joni's door. "Becs? What's going on?" Joni said confused. It was only then that Rebecca realized that she was crying. "I... I..." she started before she began to cry harder.

"Hey. It's okay come on," Joni said wrapping an arm around her shoulder and pulling her into her apartment. "What the hell happened?" she asked her when she had sat on the couch.

"Who was at the door, babe?" Isaac said walking out of the hallway. He stopped when he saw Rebecca with her head in her hands and Joni rubbing her back. Joni shrugged when he gave her a look that said: "what's wrong?" He turned and walked to the kitchen filling a glass with water before he walked back to the living room and placing it in front of Rebecca. "I'll leave you guys alone to talk. Let me know if you need me," he smiled sadly in Rebecca's direction before heading to his office.

"Becs. You got to tell me what is going on," Joni said when she looked back up finally. Rebecca nodded.

"Vince. He showed up at the hospital." She started. Joni's eyes nearly fell out of her head. If she was feeling better, Rebecca would have laughed.

"You told him? What a bastard. Don't worry, Isaac and I will help you. You don't need him." She rambled getting angrier the more she talked. Rebecca grabbed her arm and shook her head.

"No. I didn't tell him. I told Tobin and he must have overheard him. He showed up and wanted to talk but spent the whole-time demanding things. Told me I was moving back in with him because it was safer," She huffed.

"But he wants to be in the baby's life?" Joni confirmed. Rebecca nodded. "Well, that's good at least. But he can't..." Joni was cut off by the sound of distant pounding noise. "What is that?" she said as she walked to her front door. The sound got louder the closer she got to the door. She decided it was safer to look before opening the door thankfully. She watched Vincent pound on Rebecca's door shouting for her to open the door.

"Seriously?" Rebecca said still sitting on the couch when she heard him shout. "What is wrong with him?"

Joni couldn't help but laugh. "You should probably just stay in the guest room tonight. "You have to talk to him but he should know you mean business. He can't boss you around like you're one of his minions." Rebecca smiled at her. "Thanks," she got up and walked toward the guest room with Joni following her.

"Take a bath to relax and you will feel better tomorrow. Maybe we can go get clothes for my niece." She giggled.

"We don't even know what it is yet," Rebecca rolled her eyes before turning to look through the dresser drawers for something to sleep in. She used to spend the night here enough that she just started leaving clothes. Sure enough, she pulled out an oversized t-shirt from her college and a small pair of spandex shorts that you wouldn't even be able to see under the shirt.

"She is a girl. I just know it," Joni beamed. She always wanted a baby girl to play dress up with. She tried but it was so hard to not show how excited she was about this baby. She would be there for her best friend and her child no matter what. "Thanks again," Rebecca smiled at her over her shoulder while she walked toward the bathroom.

Joni smiled. "See you in the morning," she sang skipping out of the room.
