Samantha hushed Elizabeth. “Keep your voice down! Don’t let the people outside hear. We’re putting on a show here—pretending to stage a suicide. No matter what Caroline thinks, we have to stick to our plan! If she’s willing to accept your child, great. If she refuses… hmph, we’ll force her to!”

Elizabeth nodded. “Yes, mom, I’ll do whatever you say.”

Up to this point, Samantha had orchestrated everything.

Elizabeth, dressed in her hospital gown, sat on the window ledge. One foot dangled outside, suspended in midair. Her hair was disheveled, and her eyes were swollen red from crying..

“Get down,” David said. “Stop making a scene.”

Elizabeth sobbed. “I’m not making a scene! I really don’t want to live anymore. After you left last night, I couldn’t sleep at all. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw a child crying, asking me why I didn’t want him, why I was trying to kill him. Mr. Ellison, I followed you without complaint. I never enjoyed any luxuries, never got an official title. I never resented you for any of it. But now, I can’t even keep my own child? That’s too cruel. And worse, my child’s fate is in Caroline’s hands? I can’t accept that. If you had no choice, if there was some unavoidable reason why we couldn’t keep this baby, I would understand. I would be willing to sacrifice for you. But why should Caroline be the one to decide-”

David cut her off, his voice calm. “Caroline wants you to keep it.”

The hospital room fell into an eerie silence.

Elizabeth froze, her mouth half–open, unable to find any words. Her mind went completely blank.

She had prepared so many arguments, but she had barely gotten two sentences out before everything fell apart.

Samantha was just as stunned. This was completely unexpected. They hadn’t seen this coming at all.
