Chapter 1
“Kayla.”
Aaron appeared with a group of people. Given the earthquake’s severity, the rescue team hadn’t yet reached my location. I felt like I had found a lifeline.
“Aaron, I’m, here.”
I struggled to form words, my voice barely louder than a mouse’s squeak.
But Aaron led his team to the other side of me.
“Aaron, please save Kayla first. We’re both in the same spot, and if one of us gets rescued, the other will be more seriously injured. Ouch… Besides, I might not have much longer to live.”
“Aaro, I’m so scared. Am I going to die?”
Jenifer was like a blood-red flower blooming through a crack, and Aaron’s heart ached for her. He made an immediate decision.
“Save Jenifer first.”
Aaron’s decision was unwavering.
I had thought my injuries were too severe to make any sound, but with Aaron’s choice, it felt as if my life was slipping away.
Even if he looked at me just once, he should have realized how much worse my condition was.
His refusal to look was because there was someone more important. If she was so important, why did he still pursue and marry me? My body was numb with pain.
Yet my heart felt as though it were being crushed by something, slowly draining my life away.
Once she was out, I felt the weight on my side lift suddenly, leading to a second collapse, and I couldn’t help but scream.
Jenifer cried out as well: “Aaro, it hurts!”
This was beyond their ability to handle.
Aaron, heartbroken, held her close, and as he left, he remembered to say to me, “I’m sorry, Jenny is too fragile and timid. I’ll call others to help you later.”
If he had looked at me, he would have known I had already lost consciousness.
