Gunpowder

Chapter Chapter Forty

Poppy dashed across the grassy field, her bare feet crashing down on the dirt and spraying little pellets of soil into the air behind her. A plump, blocky creature was racing ahead of her, always just a foot out of her reach. It was fluffy and black, with a white underbelly.

At least thats what she imagined, or was forcing herself to imagine. A quick tap on her shoulder brought her back to reality, where she was sitting in a courtroom, full of tired looking citizens and bored teenagers on their phones. A group of three people were standing up near the judge, who looked just as bored as everyone else.

The warm presence of Axis was there at her side. She was slightly leaning on her, her head resting on her shoulder.

“I didn’t think court was supposed to be this tedious,” she grumbled, her vision slightly blurry from grogginess.

“Such important legal matters often are. But they same to be leaning in her favor,”

“Abbet’s favor?”

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

“I don’t know, I can just tell some times. People act differently depending on the outcome of their choice, I guess,”

“She won’t live with us, will she?”

“No, of course not.”

“Good. I don’t want to see more of her than I have to,”

“Moi non plus”

“Wait. What? T-That’s French, you do know that right? I didn’t know you spoke the language”

“I’m taking French classes,”

“What? Why?”

“To understand your native language,”

“You’re learning another language for me?”

“Yeah. And I just like the language,”

Poppy smiled, leaning over on the woman again. This time, Axis turned her head around, planting a quick kiss on the top of her scalp. Poppy didn’t seem to notice, and just snuggled to deeper into her girlfriend’s shoulder.
