Chapter 5
Part 5
He trembled, almost losing his balance. “How could it be her? It’s like something out of a horror movie, she, she….”
Xander steadied him, his tone gentle. “I get that this is a lot to take in right now, but it’s the truth,” he said quietly.
Steven took a few deep breaths, trying to calm himself.
“Mr. Young, is this result legit? Or are you and Sabrina making something up to mess with me?” he asked, suspicion dripping from his words.
Xander’s
eyes widened. “Seriously? I get you and your wife aren’t tight, but you think I’d lie about this life–and–death stuff?”
“You don’t know how sneaky she can be!” Steven spat out, clearly frustrated.
“She even pushed my first love to bail on me and go abroad. Been playing mind games for years and I’ve seen through her act!”
Hearing my husband’s venomous words, I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly. Turns out, he’d been stewing in resentment towards me all along.
I just smiled through the tears. My young–pure love meant nothing in the end.
Back in college, I fell head over heels for Steven the moment I laid eyes on him. Little did I know he was secretly dating campus queen Kelly. They never flaunted their relationship, so I dove in headfirst, doing everything for him – breakfast, laundry, you name it.
But after six months of hustle, all I got was a cold. “Don’t bother, I’m just not into you.”
Just when I was about to throw in the towel, Steven hit me with a bombshell, “Let’s give it a shot.” I was over the moon and said yes through tears.
Turned out, it was the day Kelly dumped him. He was hurting and I was his band–aid, a rebound. But he couldn’t win her back.
When Kelly was about to leave the country for good, he didn’t even think twice about dropping to his knees, this almost 6 feet tall dude bawling like a baby. It was so cringeworthy.
I was there, watching it all go down. Whatever Kelly said to him, they both turned to look at me before she walked away, leaving Steven a broken man.
He came to me afterward, looking like he’d been hit by a truck. “Sabrina, being with you is just settling,” he said.
But I was stupidly in love. Seeing Kelly leave, I thought I’d won the war. So, I doubled down on my efforts, determined to make Steven happy. I’d even give him the world if I could.
His parents were into me and his friend gave me approval, so I ended up tying the knot with him. I figured life would just keep chugging along, plenty of time ahead to sprinkle a little love on his
cold heart.
Then came our wedding night and he was hammered. He pointed his finger at me and slurred, “It’s all your fault! You drove Kelly away that she went abroad!
“I don’t love you one bit. Why’d you rush into marrying me like some desperate bargain bin? You

wrecked my shot at lifelong happiness, ruined me! Ruined the love I had with Kelly!”
I was stunned, had no clue where all this was coming from. But he took my silence as guilt, grabbed me by the neck and yelled, “It’s you! Kelly said you intimidated her and got her all riled up abroad!”
“Sabrina, you’re just a rebound after our break–up. What makes you think you’re so special? Trying to fill my wife’s shoes?”
I finally got why Kelly shot me those looks before she left the country. She’d cooked up some good story about me.
He passed out soon after, leaving me to stare at the bruises on my neck, feeling utterly powerless. I knew even if I tried to set things straight, he’d never believe me. In his world, only Kelly’s word mattered.
