Ghost of Whisper Creek

Chapter 11: Meeting with Hilde and Aditi

Krita was impressed with the halls that she walked as she followed her young niece to meet Hilde and his young family. She had always thought of Nils as a mere follower meek warrior doing whatever father asked of him. He had begun to win her respect when he fought to marry Ri’ana. Leaving Kronnborg had won it completely, of course she couldn’t come right out and say that to her younger sibling, but she envied him. His life was settling while hers was continuously upset by chaos.

Krita was smart enough to know that she was not getting the entire story of the rescue from Nils, that made her respect grow. He was protecting people, probably Ri’ana or the La Seine, but maybe the Arandils. Maybe they were here in Old North as she walked the halls. It would be quite the coup for Krita, after dispatching the Ghost of Whisper Creek to capture and return the fleeing Arandil heirs. But Papa had kept the boy for over two years secretly under the castle, that was wrong. As was marrying off Freda to secure his claim on the lands.

Kisa and Krita came to a halt at a closed door, “This where Uncle Hilde is staying?” Krita asked before Kisa could knock or burst through the door. Krita at Kisa’s age would have chosen the latter, but Nils and Ri’ana probably insisted on some degree of manners.

Kisa nodded “Yup!” She grinned and reached up to the large knocker on the door, standing on her toes and with fingers managed to raise the metal ring and let it fall with a loud “Clack!” Inside a little girl’s voice could be heard “Kisa!!” scrambling followed for a few moments before the door pulled open and a girl with dark eyes burst out of the room “Kisa! Kisa! Come lookit! Mama found shells! They are so-” she paused and slowly looked up blinking at the large women next to Kisa, after a moment’s silence she called out “Papa!!!”

Krita tried to give a sly smile and wink to the girl that had come out the door as well Kisa, hoping they would catch on that what came next was only play, “That’s right you ole...” she looked down at the little girls before saying what she had intended, Krita didn’t need to be blamed for the word coming out of a mouth it shouldn’t have later after she left, “Get out here and save your little girl from the mean She-wolf of the North!”

Hilde was quickly up and heading towards the door when he heard Lyn’s call, but his urgency turned to relief when he heard Krita’s taunting voice. He pushed open the door and lifted Krita off her feet with a hug. “What are you doing here!?”

“Heading South to visit a friend, make plans to further my military career. Heard rumors that I had new family members to visit on my way.” Krita answered with a smile, though she did struggle against being held. The struggle had Hilde laughing, “Though rumor also said you were pretty banged up and still healing. Is your lying wife here?” she asked followed by a loud laugh that said there was no ill feelings from the fib.

Hilde smiled as he returned Krita’s feet to the ground, “Aditi’s here. Just tending to some business at the moment, should be back any moment now. First you have to meet the little ones,” eyes fell to his daughter, “This be Jae’lyn, we call her Lyn for short.” Small hands gripped Hilde’s leg from behind. He gave a smile and ushered the little boy attached to the hand to stand in front of him, “And this is Jae’dyn, Jae for short.” He paused for a moment and looked at Jae for a moment, “Where’s Rohir?”

Jae gave a silent point in towards the room. Hilde gave a sigh and started into the room. “Jae, Lyn, this is Papa’s cousin Krita, Uncle Nils’ older sister. You can call her Aunt Krita.” He waved everyone inside as he searched out the third youngster in his charge for the moment.

“Hi Aunt Krita,” Jae said nervously, he could see the resemblance between Krita and Nils, it was hard to miss, fair hair and skin, blue eyes tall and athletic builds.

Krita smiled and waved to Jae, “Hi little one,” she looked at Lyn and waved to her as well before talking once more. “Rohir? Ri’ana said that name as well. I thought it was just the twins for you cousin.”

“A sorted affair, much better saved for when little ears are not around,” Hilde answered with a sigh, “Part of the family nonetheless.”

Rohir in his room silently playing with the toys Aditi had gotten him. The toys were made of sea creatures, whales, sharks and boats along with a little wooden sword that he contentedly teethed on. Lyn and Kisa pushed past the Adults and went to play with him while from the door voices could be heard “I really don’t care if he is being stubborn. You either get me that profit or pry it from his fingers. We do not tolerate drunken whalers, especially those that live up to the title.”

“Aye Salty.” the second voice stated crisply before running off and Aditi stepped into the room. She paused when she saw Krita and grinned “Krita! Well what a surprise!”

Krita smiled at her cousin’s wife. “Visit was a bit of a whim. Lord Ammon finally sent me and my troops out on a mission, was a success, but an eye opener. Heading south for some pointers from a friend, first though a few days with family. How are you doing?”

“Busy.” Aditi smiled “But we are doing well. Congratulations on your first Mission. Krita.”

Krita gave a nervous smile, “My mission was a success overall, but like I said gave me room to question what we Northerners do in warfare. Hopefully I can make things good with a little coastal pilgrimage.”

Aditi chuckled and nodded “Northern tactics work in the north. Brutality and force does wonders to small villages that are starving and sheltering from harsh winters. Here though. Well...we have time to perfect our tactics.” gesturing to the living chambers where sofas, chairs and table sat she invited “Come in. Rest yourself you are most welc- oh. Rohir!” Aditi laughed as she looked down at her leg where the little boy clung on. Kneeling down she picked the little boy up “Let me get these little rascals to sleep. I’ll be out shortly.”

Krita let a small giggle out as she waved to the little boy, “You don’t have to worry about pushing the kids out of the way. I kinda like having them around. They certainly are different than a bunch of soldiers.”

The little boy in Aditi’s arms gave a shy smile and quickly buried his head into her shoulder, even so his hand moved in a small wave before vanishing as he tucked them between himself and his mom. Lyn and Kisa had snuck around and behind the couch and now peeked out over the back rest “You wolf?” Kisa aked. Lyn giggled and made small howling wolf sounds which had the both giggling and hiding behind the couch again.

Krita smiled and made her way over to the couch where she sat and looked at the young girls, “Wolf is what people call me, She-wolf actually.” She pointed to the wolf heads on her shoulders, “I like the way that makes people look at me, so I don’t argue with it, I haven’t gotten the hang of the howling yet,” she laughed and pointed to Lyn, “You’re much better at it than me.”

Lyn giggled and howled again, which had Kisa howling as well before they started to bat paws at eachother as if they were wolf cubs wrestling. Aditi laughed “Oh now they will never go to sleep. Very well then.” Shifting Rohir on her hip she went to the kitchen to get them all drinks.

Krita laughed and looked to her cousin as the girls played, “You were the last person that I would expect with a family. How is it treating you?”

Hilde watched the girls as Jae stood next to him silently, “It was quite a pleasant surprise to me as well,” he admitted. “Though I think you were the person that most thought was least likely to start a family. You went to the extent of making a deal with Lord Ammon to avoid having a family chosen for you.”

Krita looked to the young children in the room and nodded slowly, “I’ll give you that. How can I look at these little ones and not be a little jealous however? I don’t want to be crazy warrior aunt Krita. Life is about more than that, I learned that when Lord Ammon finally let me go and do things on my own, not just sit in the back and mop up after his victories. I need to find something to settle me down, I don’t know if it will be devoting myself to defense and prosperity of Kronnborg, or if I can find what you and Nils have found. But I can’t keep going like I have.”

Hilde looked back to Aditi in the kitchen, “I hope you get as lucky. I thought that the Eol would be it for me, the ship and the crew what I lived for. A family is something so much more precious. Don’t give up on it. Look at me...us...you’ve got time still.”

Krita laughed, “You know I don’t give up, cousin.” She looked back to Aditi, “I just don’t know there is someone out there that is willing to put up with me.”

“There is always someone who can put up with another.” Aditi stated as she returned with hands full of bottles of mead. Even a bottle for Rohir, which was filled with juice instead of the mead. “Drinks are on the counter for the rest of you.” she smiled over at Jae and the girls, both Lyn and Kisa stopped their play fighting and ran to the kitchen as Aditi sat down and adjusted Rohir on her lap “Hilde puts up with me after all.” she chuckled.

Hilde laughed, “Putting up with you is a task at times,” he gave a nudge to Jae who rushed off to the kitchen to take his own drink.

Krita laughed as she looked at Hilde, “I have a feeling you’re going to pay for that comment later,” she said with a wink towards Aditi. “You were in ‘North Port’, for a time. Were the Arandils that bad?”

Aditi chuckled “I had quite a colorful background long before the Arandils. They were just the results of a torn and broken soul that didn’t care for life at that point. Otherwise the place would of been burnt long before you arrived.” Carefully she popped the cork on her bottle and took a drink, smiling at Rohir who teethed on his own bottle, quiet and content. “No. Hilde has every right to label me as a ’task’ I know I’ve challenged our boundaries a few times. Not purposefully but the results were still the same.”

Krita looked to the boy at Aditi’s hip as she took a bottle of mead for herself. “I suppose if I find someone in my future I will have to accept that I will be called a task as well. You told me Hilde was still licking wounds. Was he really just here babysitting?”

“Aye.” Aditi chuckled “I’m afraid so. We didn’t think his father would accept that as an excuse however. Surprise for me when I found him in the cellars and discovered how much he knew of us. Little birds chirp too much.”

Krita shook her head, “Uncle Agard is still quite close to Lady Ranna. And he makes it his business to know as much as he possibly can, that’s just about what goes on in the castle, you really think that he has only one source as to what happens with his son? Uncle Agard is smart though, he knows that Hilde and Ranna need to be kept out of Lord Ammon’s eyes as much as possible, unless they are doing something to benefit Kronnborg.”

Aditi nodded “Aye. He took it all well and mead was shared all around so I say it all worked out.” she smiled.

Krita nodded, “Agard may be loyal to Papa to a fault, but Hilde, and by extension you and your children might be the one thing that he would turn for. But let’s hope that never has to be a decision that comes to be made.” She paused and remembered that Aditi was tending to business, “Are you helping with things here in Old North, or do you guys have plans of your own?”

Aditi smiled “Our own plans. Not sure how much you heard of who I am..I am Ruce. Noble Blood of Sharkhead, the port is where I was born. The leaders there are called ‘Salty.’ In all the years however none of my brothers or sisters have taken their claim of the port so...I will be taking over and cleaning up the place. Hopefully in a year or two it will be stable enough for us to live there instead of here. Until then...Nils and Lady Ri’ana have been most gracious.”

Krita’s eyes bounced back and forth between Aditi and Hilde as she tried to remember details of Sharkhead Port. She knew that Aditi was noble, remembered something about the Ruce being less than traditional. “Your siblings are all older are they not? Though if I remember correctly most are not exactly in contention for control of your home. If you need infantry support in taking your home back, don’t forget about me.”

Chuckling Aditi nodded “Thank you Krita.”

Krita nodded, “I can make no promises, but I’ll do everything I can to help. And Lord Ammon cares little about what the Wolf’s Bunnies do most days. I wouldn’t want you in his debt however. Everyone deserves a home however and if I have to follow the examples of my big cousin, and little brother to learn what life really has to offer other than chaos, I will do so. You are family. All of you.”

“Speaking of family” Aditi spoke after helping Rohir from spilling his drink “Where is Nils and Ri’ana? I see Kisa is here..”

Krita gave an unsure look, “They allowed me to take Kisa to see her cousins, I am surprised they haven’t caught up with us yet though. Maybe they are getting things prepared. I did bring a hundred swords with me. Not an easy task to be ready for them.”

Aditi laughed “A hundred!? Ah yes, they will be busy for a bit then. Are you hungry? We haven’t had dinner yet. I am sure they will be there with the rest of the citadel.”

“Eat!” Lyn exclaimed and pointed to the door “Eat eat!”

Kisa giggled and did the same “Eat!” Even Rohir pointed though he kept to teething on his bottle.

Jae looked at all the calling out in confusion and then made his way into the midst of the adults, “Fish?” he asked staring up at his mother.

Aditi smiled “I’m sure they will have some fish, Jae.”

Jae’s eyes lit up and looked to Krita, “Hungry?” he asked almost pushing with only one word.

Krita laughed, “Four hungry mouths. I don’t want to hold them back, and I certainly don’t want to stay here on my own. Let’s go see what kinda meals my brother provides his guests.”

Aditi laughed, grunting as she pushed herself up off the chair, careful of Rohir who reached hands up at her for her to pick him up “Alright kids. Form up!” Both Kisa and Lyn quickly dropped whatever it was they were doing and ran to Jae, grabbing each of his hands and pulling him to the door. Jae was always much slower so they felt the need to hurry him along. Once Jae stood at the front next to the door Lyn stood behind him and Kisa behind her, all three stood tall, obedient, and patiently waiting at the door.

Krita laughed a little at the display, “I can’t even get my soldiers to do that. Maybe I don’t need to talk with Idril, just ask you for your secret.”

Jae was glaring at his sister and cousin. It wasn’t his fault that he always liked to think things out and do things the right way instead of rushing to do the first thing that came to his mind, but he did follow directions and he really wanted some fish. He missed being close to the sea like he was in South Port and Jord’s Pyre. “Didn’t need pull!” he exclaimed to the girls.

Both girls held hands up to lips and giggled as Aditi moved to their side “Oh it’s different with kids. They are shamelessly bribed” she laughed as she reached into a basket and pulled out a handful of dried fruits for the kids to nibble on while they walked down to the dining hall. “Adults require discipline and punishment, as do kids if they get too far out of hand. But the steps are different. Even I am still learning. I’m used to training smaller groups of twenty or so...a hundred seems over much.” she smiled as she handed the treats out.

Krita nodded, “Luckily the men follow without too much argument. I’ve got several things working for me with my troops, they all fought for Lord Arandil and changed sides, hard to turncloak twice in a lifetime, and Lord Ammon will see them dead. Some think doing what I say will impress me, which was the point of the armor. That was Idril’s suggestion which is why I am going to see her. Mostly though I need to make my troops into swords I can trust in Ra’vain. They would be torn to pieces against a Northern or Ra’vish threat the way they are now. I need to learn how to make them better.”

Aditi nodded “Which is why I stick to smaller groups. Even a ships crew doesn’t get much bigger than fifty or so. Smaller your crew the more you can connect with them personally, even Idril and Ash divided their forces to keep loyalties in check. Perhaps you need to find yourself a trustworthy Captain to help you control the masses.”

Krita gave a sigh, “Thought I had five to take control of parts of my host. One proved to be less than trustworthy, and the only person I know I can put my trust in is my squire or serving girl depending on who you ask. The others...who knows they have families that mine has hurt in some way or another.”

“Sounds to me like you have too many Arandils.” Aditi smiled as she opened the door “If it were me I would switch those five out for Northmen. People you know you can trust to help keep the Arandils in line.” Shrugging she looked up to her husband “You coming?”

Hilde nodded and gave a laugh as he followed, “What you’re saying makes sense, but assumes that Lord Ammon will give Krita Northmen to command. He always gives her the rabble of his swords. With Nils leaving and taking men with him, I’m surprised she even gets one hundred.” His eyes shifted to Krita, “Probably because they are Arandil.”

Krita gave a quick nod, “He doesn’t want the ‘bunnies’ with his men. I get all of them, and as long as I have this many, I can’t hope to get anyone else. The Arandil I’m hoping will be easier to train than Northmen however. Leomorn would follow me anywhere if I let him in my bed, but he wants it too badly. Horeak helped a lot in my mission, I think his loyalty is true, Pegason and Fruorin gave no reason for me to question either. But Trakas was my closest sword until we met his brother. Made me realize that memories are quite long.”

“Aye. That they are.” Aditi nodded, looking to her kids “Alright kids, march to the Dining Hall.” Gently she placed Rohir down and gave him a dried fruit so that he could join the other kids, waiting for Jae to lead the way “Loyalty for affection isn’t loyal. And Arandils have never been real reliable. Might need to find the extra help elsewhere. Perhaps South Port would agree to aid with your troubles but that would require something in return. In the end I am afraid I don’t have much suggestion for you. My tactics would scare your men away I think.” she chuckled.

Krita smiled as she considered what the La Seine would require in return. “I thank you for your consideration, and yes loyalty for an unearned place in my bed is just begging for something bad to happen. I think he knows he doesn’t have a shot, but he continues to have that look.”

“Not talking about me....Are you?” A familiar and rumbling voice sounded down the hall opposite the direction the kids took. Chance was striding down the hall towards them with a large grin and almost predatory pace as his path was direct for Krita.

Krita bit her lower lip nervously, “Kin?” she asked unsurely. “No we weren’t talking about you, though seeing you again could lead to bad things as well.”

“Truly?” Chance pulled free the black scarf to reveal more of his face and brought forth a rose similar to the one he offered her at the banquet as he stopped next to her and bowed, the rose extended to her to take. “Will I like these ’bad things?’my Lady.”

Krita laughed and looked down at the kids who were still marching as they were directed Jae in the lead, “I think the bad things you’ve earned will be enjoyed by both of us. Just hope you don’t get too attached, not looking for a puppy to follow me around,” she answered with a wink.

“Hah!” Chance laughed as he straightened from his bow “Following you? My Lady. I believe you are in my home.” he winked back “So which puppy is following who? Hm?” he looked to the Ruce family and grinned, offering her his arm “Going to dinner?”

Hilde gave a laugh towards Krita and a nod to Chance, “That we are, since you and my cousin seem to be well acquainted you can join us if you wish.” Krita gave a glare to each of them, but waited silently for Chance to respond.

“Ah yes.” Chance nodded “I met this lovely sheila when Lord Nils attended a banquet in Kronnborg. Lady Ri’ana thought that....since we know each other. I could act as your guide in the city of Old North and her citadel....if you will have my company of course. My Lady?”

Krita smiled, “Your presence would be very welcome.” Hilde was quick to Aditi’s side nudging forward to follow the kids. He suspected that they would have further discussion before Krita left Old North, but that she would be occupied for the remainder of the walk. “I do intend to spend a good deal of my stay with family however, so I don’t know how much of a guide I will need. Nights should be free however.” She held her hand out for Chance to take.

Chance grinned and slipped up beside her, his hand guiding hers to his arm like a gentleman would to escort a lady. “You won’t even notice I’m here, Unless you wish it of course.”

Krita laughed, “I thought I said I didn’t want a puppy chasing me around. Seems Lady Ri’ana is comfortable with you if she requested your services to see to me, Hilde and Aditi don’t seem to be upset by your presence. Either the kids are so focused on food they don’t know you’re here, or you aren’t a foreign sight. I have a feeling you’re a bit more than a mere hunter.” She gave his side a nudge, “I would very much prefer to know you are present than hiding in the shadows. And for the record, I did not even know for sure you would be here, so don’t think I am following you.” The last bit was added in a whisper.

Chance leaned towards her and whispered back “Now why would you think that. My Lady?” he chuckled and straightened “I did say I worked here as a hunter. All joking aside I just got back from a long patrol so it was a surprise when Lady Ri’ana dismissed my duties for the day and told me to see to your needs. I do not plan to make you feel uncomfortable.” he winked teasingly.

Krita gave a snicker, “Aditi told others on your trip to Kronnborg that she was merely a hunter here. I assume Nils had his most trusted as the hunters no matter what their true jobs may be. You could be out on any number of assignments. I came to see family...but I’m glad to see you Kin, and more glad to have you seeing to my needs. We can discuss how to make me most comfortable later.”

“Sounds agreeable to me!” Chance grinned.

Aditi took Hildes arm and leaned her head on his shoulder while the kids marched in front of them. The truth was they knew Chance was there, but was too busy with their fruit treats to care.

Hilde smiled and leaned his head down against Aditi’s. “Chance will be able to handle himself right? I don’t see Krita settling down with a younger man. She’s just having fun.”

“Oh. Chance is nothing but fun.” Aditi laughed softly “He’ll be fine.”

Hilde grinned, “Good, Krita doesn’t sleep much, never has. I doubt Nils wants her restless in the citadel, but I would have warned Chance away if I thought he would take it too seriously.”

“Chance spends his off times at the Green Dragon. He’s been turned down so much it’s just part of the ‘play’ for him.” Aditi shrugged “I doubt he’s looking for anything serious. He’s not that kind of guy.”

Hilde gave a small nod, “They’re not going to put them too close to us will they? We can use the sleep whenever the kids let us.”

Aditi chuckled “I believe the guest wing was just finished. So she will likely stay there. Sleep with you would be most welcome about now.”

Hilde placed his arm around her waist and gave her a gentle squeeze, “Maybe Nils and Ri’ana will see the wisdom of allowing the cousins to play and tire themselves out. A night without ups and downs would be tremendous.”

“If we’re lucky perhaps the kids will wear themselves down in the play room after dinner and sleep in there. Leave one of the nannies to watch them while we sleep.” she smiled and squeezed him back.

“Sounds wonderful,” Hilde said with a wide grin. His eyes widened as he watched Jae lead the other kids into the dining hall. “First let’s make sure the kids get what they need. I am famished as well.”

“Aye me too!” Aditi laughed as they approached the Dining Hall. Lady Ri’ana was already there working with the servants to prep for their extra guests

Kisa squealed and broke formation “Mama!”

Ri’ana turned and smiled as she bent and caught her daughter in a hug “Hello Kisa. You have fun with your cousins and aunt?”

Kisa nodded excitedly “Yes!”

Krita watched Kisa rush off to her mother. She looked at the red-haired pair with a bit of happy jealousy, “Ever wonder how they make it work? Parents in general I mean,” she asked Chance in a whisper.

“Believe it or not I’ve watched many Parents ’make it work’ and I still have no idea how.” he laughed as he lead her to one of the seats and pulled it out for her to sit.

Krita gladly took the offered chair and waited for Chance to take a seat next to her, “Well Hilde just told me that I have time still, if that’s true then you’ve got a lot of time to figure out how to make it work. It is scary though. I left Kronnborg hoping to learn how to make my soldiers better, couple cute kids and I’m thinking about other parts of my life too. Ra’vain is certainly not the North.”

“I’ve never been to the North. My Lady” Chance sat in the chair next to her “But it is not un-common for Ra’vain people to think of all aspects. We are even trained in certain fields of family life. Family is important here. Even pressured in most cases. I’m the ninth child of Lord Matsu however so its not so forced on me. I assume it’s just one of those things you figure out when it happens.”

Krita gave a nod, “I was a warrior woman with a younger brother, the pressure was taken off of me as well...ninth?” she asked loud enough that several heads turned towards her.

Chance laughed at her sudden question “Yes. Ninth. My father has ten children. Two wives. You want to know pressure my lady?” he smiled “Try living up to all those siblings expectations.”

Krita gave a nod, “My mother is trying to become a gentler noble lady, for my sister, but she was a passionate warrior in her day in the North, my father was a warrior King who fought against the land itself for much longer than others would have. I feel the pressure of being part of a legacy that is very large. If I had that many siblings I would hope to fold in with the background. But being the oldest and the youngest seems to have a bright light shined on us.”

“Hm. Perhaps so, but that can’t be too bad. Hm?” he smiled “I could never hope to earn anything of my fathers legacy. You have a chance to be heir. Leader of Kronnborg. If Nils doesn’t take it despite how things turn out that is.”

Krita gave a sigh, “Even more pressure. In order to do that I may lose my deal with my father to choose my own path, my own mate. If I don’t my mother will pressure Lord Ammon to give the castle to my sister, she’s a good candidate to be a proper Ra’vish Lady.” As food started to be dished out by the attendants Krita’s hand slipped beneath the table and squeezed Chance’s leg, “Let’s not think about the outside pressures however. I prefer to let things happen how they will for now. Enjoy the meal and the company and see what tomorrow brings.”

“Sounds good to me, My Lady” Chance smiled as he took a small cherry tomato and popped it into his mouth. Once swallowed he nodded “Though I should say. Everything in life here in Ra’vain is with it’s own dose of pressure. Be it to rule a house or make it home the next day...pressure will always be apart of who you are. But if we make the best of it, push through it. Well” he smiled “Nothing but good things can come of that, hm?”

Krita gave a soft snicker, “Aye, there is truth in those words. Pressure can be forgotten for a short time, but it does not disappear. Even if the source of one pressure is conquered, as you say another is usually quick to replace it. It is not absence of pressure that I seek, only to structure it and balance it. In the North you tackle a problem with all you have and then wait for the next problem to arise. Ra’vish seem to prepare for the next problem while they try to enjoy the peace. I’d like to become more like that...in time. For now enjoying my young nieces and nephews and good company is my only goal. Until more pressure is placed upon me.”

“Well there is certainly plenty of that here.” Chance laughed. “These little rogues keep you running. Sometimes makes me forget I’m a Hunter not a babysitter.”

Krita chuckled, “I can see that happening, at least you only have to handle it in shifts. Mothers and fathers get little rest, if they care. I can tell these parents care a good deal. It will be hard for them to build homes and Houses while making sure the young ones are taken care of. I think those four can do it though...me...not sure I would do as great. Maybe that’s why I refuse to settle down so far. Don’t want to be like Papa, worrying about my lands first, or Mama who took passing two children off to someone else to raise before she realized what being a mother was really like. Balance, that’s the key,” she shook her head and the hand that had squeezed his leg slid towards his hip. A smile took her face as she selected a small fruit that she did not recognize and popped it into her mouth, “I’m just not that balanced yet too focused on one thing or another, for now that’s you Kin.”

“Well if you re-call.” Chance grinned as he reached down and took her hand “Another Lady within this room felt the pressure too. Thought much the same way you did...if I recall correctly” he winked. In that scenario she ended up running from her troubles. “I’m sure you will figure it out. Just as she did.”

Krita did recall, she hated Lady Ri’ana upon meeting her, but had sense realized it was the situation that Krita hated and the fact Nils threw himself into the situation so freely. Looking at it now she could see how the Lady Ri’ana of that time was a lot like her. “I hope it won’t take running away from duty, being corralled by a foreign man, and a child to turn the tides for myself. I’d much rather be taught how to balance things.” Her hand gripped his gently, “I have heard rumors of ‘mistakes’ made during the courtship, things I wouldn’t mind mimicking in my own lessons. You available to keep me company tonight?”

“Of course My Lady” Chance grinned and leaned forward to whisper into her ear “The wolf is yours until the moon sets into morning.”

Krita giggled, “Back home, I’m the wolf,” she purred into his ear pausing to nip playfully at his earlobe, “You played the part of hunter so well in Kronnborg that I might be willing to play the part of prey once more. It’s fun to have a turn of play once and a while.”

Chance chuckled “If you saw my lineage, you would understand why I proudly carry the mantle of a Wolf.” he winked, reaching out to slide his hands along the small of her back where armor showed skin “But tonight I serve you. If a hunt is what you desire, a hunt you shall have.”

Krita felt the tingle of his touch and shivered a bit in excitement. “I thought some girl gave you the name for the sounds you make,” she replied with an answering wink. “I desire no hunt, like I said fun family and good company. Just don’t leave my room until it’s time to spend the morning with family and I will be quite content. Even if you require sleep.”

The Lord of the newly rebuilt city watched his sister and Chance play at their game. It was not a foreign sight to him. Noble daughters of Ra’vain were intended to remain pure and chaste, the same was not to be said of Princesses in the North. Krita had left her innocence long before the Rodsvards left the North, and so Nils didn’t rush to jump between Krita and her playthings. It concerned him that Chance was a member of his household, but Ri’ana had assured him that Chance knew what he was doing, so the Lord merely sat nibbling occasionally at his food, and watching to make sure things weren’t to get too outlandish between the two.

Ri’ana reached out for his hand and squeezed it comfortingly, leaning her head on his shoulder while Kisa who had vanished from her seat popped up between her parents “Play!” she squeaked happily.

Nils could not help to first smile at the touch of his wife and then give a silent chuckle at the actions of his daughter. He mussed the red hair of his daughter and laughed a little louder his eyes finally leaving his sister, “We just started to eat,” he said gently, “And I can see that Jae has a whole fish on his plate. You might have to wait until he’s bored with the fish before it’s time to play. Have you eaten enough sweetheart? You’re good and full?”

Kisa shook her head and brought up her fork with meat speared on the end of it, she offered it to her father “Eat and play!” she bounced proudly at the offering.

Nils took the fork from his daughter and bit at the meat that was at the end, “Don’t get in anyone’s way and no playing with forks and knives.” He looked around to try and find the other Ruce children, but failed to locate them. He laughed as Jae continued to poke at the fish on his plate. “Maybe you can go ask Jae if he’s eating or studying.”

Instead of answering Kisa vanished under the table and came up in the empty chair next to Jae. she knelt on the chairs surface and watched him for a moment before asking “What’chu doin?”

Jae startled as his cousin popped up and questioned him, but dropped the spoon he was pushing against the fish and turned to smile at Kisa, “Looks same now as when ’twas swim in water. Other animals not look same when cook. Mama says it ok to eat, I worried I hurt it.”

Kisa frowned and looked at the fish on his plate “It no move, no feel?”

“Don’t know,” Jae responded shrugging, “Looks live though right?”

Kisa nodded and looked to the plate “Yes. But Mama eat.” she pointed to her mom across the table who had devoured half of hers already

Jae looked at Ri’ana and noticed her plate and nodded, “I share you eat too. Both stab at same time make sure it dead.”

“Oh Tay!” Kisa nodded as she picked a fork from the table “One?”

Jae smiled and raised his fork pointing it at the middle of the fish, “Two.”

“Three!” Kisa exclaimed as both forks stabbed down at the fish on the plate. The fish of course made no move as it had been out of the water for long enough to be dead, and was cooked on top of that.

Jae laughed and took a chunk of the flesh out with his fork and tasted it. His eyes lit up and lips smacked together, “Is good! No wonder why your Mama eats.”

Kisa giggled and took a bite herself “Mm! Yum Yum!” she agreed with a happy nod.

Jae took a look around and smiled before taking bite after bite in a less than gracious pace. “When is gone we go and play. Don’t think Rohir or Lyn still eat.”

Kisa shook head “Cousins all done! They play now. Mmm”

Jae’s eyes moved around the room still as he continued to pile fish into his mouth. He paused for a moment only so he could manage to speak, “Maybe Mamas and Papas let us play with Aldrick!” He said pointing to the older boy sitting as close as he could to the soldiers that were invited to dine with the Lord and his family.

“Oh yes! We go play swords!” Kisa nodded as she took another bite.

Jae took another bite of the fish and then smiled at Kisa. “Nuff food let’s go get Aldrick.” He didn’t wait for a response just grabbed her hand and started off towards the older boy.

Kisa giggled as she speared a quick bite and let herself be dragged off, purring pleasantly as she ate the bite on the run. When they stopped by the older boy she accidently ran into Jae before looking up at Aldrick and blushed. Quickly hiding behind her cousin in playful shyness.

Aldrick looked at the younger kids with an annoyed look before he realized who it was. No other children were usually present when Nils and Ri’ana entertained, but Aldrick was focused on the stories that the warriors were sharing and was caught a bit off guard. “Jae, Kisa, shouldn’t you be eating?”

“Done eating!” Jae exclaimed, “Play swords with Aldrick!”

Aldrick looked at the two and smiled. He wasn’t exactly thrilled about babysitting duties on the off times that he was drafted for it, but he loved to play swords even with the kids that were too little to do any more than smack the wooden play blades together. “Just you two? Gonna make Lyn watch over Rohir?” he asked with a smile, “Mama and Papa said it was alright?”Jae looked at Kisa and nodded nervously.

“Papa say. Done eating, can play!” Kisa nodded more enthusiastically than Jae.

Jae smiled and nodded again with more fervor than he had previously. His parents of course had not given him permission, but if Uncle Nils said it was ok then it had to be alright. “Lyn likes sitting with Rohir, we go now play swords!”

Aldrick laughed and stood from his spot, a growing boy his plate had been cleaned for some time as he sat and listened to the words passed around the table. “Very well let’s go,” he said taking Jae and Kisa by the hand and slowly leading them from the room making sure that someone saw them leaving. Lord Nils might have said play was ok, but he and Lady Ri’ana would likely appreciate knowing where and what play consisted of.

The older boy led the way to a small room simply furnished with a desk, bed and dresser. On the wall was quite a collection of play weapons. Since this was not a rare occurrence, Aldrick kept his blunted practice sword on the dresser out of the reach of the younger children. “Pick your weapons,” he said with a smile as if he was the ringleader of a famous dueling arena.

Kisa giggled and quickly went in search of ’her’ sword. Or at least the one she often used when playing with Aldrick and Jae. Once she found it she rose it up like a trophy “Got mine!”

Jae also rushed over to Aldrick’s toys and looked them over carefully as he always did. Unlike Kisa, Jae didn’t have a weapon he commonly used. He was curious about them all so his search was looking for something new rather than something familiar. Finally he grabbed one, it was probably a second hand weapon for Aldrick, something between a dagger and a short sword, to Jae it was at least something he could handle. “Me too! Let’s fight!” he called out and moved towards Kisa. Aldrick cleared his throat and glared at Jae. “Let’s play!” he corrected himself.

Moving to the center of the room Kisa fell into an awkward ready stance just like she was taught. It was awkward because she was still young and learning about her own sense of balance, not that it would stop her from trying her best.

Jae as usual did not follow previous instruction. He played with intuition, knowing that whoever he was playing with would try to use what they were taught, Lyn and Kisa were rather competitive that way, he liked to see if he could beat their lessons. He started towards Kisa both hands on his weapon standing up straight. Aldrick laughed, “Gonna try things your own way again huh Jae?” he asked shaking his head. “Get him Kisa,” he added with a laugh.

Kisa giggled and waited until the last moment before ducking and moving forward with a side swing to Jae’s torso, her swings were soft and gentle. After all, this was just play.

Jae scrunched his nose as his attempt failed and yelped in surprise when Kisa’s attack pressed against his side. The damage was null, all of the kids knew that if they hurt one of the others they wouldn’t be able to play until they were old enough to understand the difference between play and practice and real fighting. The dark haired boy took a step backwards and swung his ‘sword’ slowly and carefully at Kisa’s. Kisa rose her blade up to block and countered with a slow and careful cut to his wrist. Jae was quicker this time, he liked hearing the clack of the toys together so he had extra incentive after hearing the first block. He moved his weapon into position and laughed when he heard the expected clack once more. Jae again took a step back, no idea that giving ground was not a smart tactical move and swung the toy in an attempt to touch Kisa’s shoulder.

After letting the younger kids play and laugh for a while, stepping in to give the little help that he had to offer being a novice at swordplay himself, Aldrick saw that eyes started to droop, swings became slower and weapons held lower. He stepped in and took the toys, “I think that’s enough for tonight. Let’s get you back to your parents,” he said. Jae narrowed his eyes as if he was going to argue but said nothing, with slumped shoulders he nodded slowly. Kisa always the more feisty was scooped up into Aldrick’s arms and carried off as Jae clung to Aldrick’s side.

“Eee!” Kisa squeaked when Aldrick picked her up “But I’m not-” she yawned and rubbed her eyes “-sleepy...”

“Of course not,” Aldrick said gently, “But Mama and Papa will think you are. We have to pretend for their sakes sometime.” He was still not out of the days where he would protest his bedtime so he understood that arguing would not get him anywhere.

“Mama, Papa need sleep too,” Jae said after a yawn of his own. “Lyn and Jae pretend sleep and try to play quiet. Kisa needs brother or sleep with cousins sometime.”

“Yes, sleep with cousins! That be fun!” she smiled even as she cuddled into Aldricks arms and her eyes dropped closed. In the dining hall Aditi was chuckling softly as she raised the tablecloth and moved a chair to the side. Under the table both Lyn and Rohir were sound asleep next to each other with a plate of stolen muffins nearby.

Hilde sitting next to Aditi noticed Jae, Kisa and Aldrick re-entering the dining hall and smiled. He too took a peek beneath the table where he knew Lyn and Rohir were hiding. His eyes met with Aditi’s and he smiled, “So far so good.”

Aditi chuckled “Question is. Do we move them or just let them sleep?” she smiled and lowered the cloth to stand and help Aldrick with Kisa, taking the girl up into her arms who barely stirred at the transfer “Good work Aldrick. Thank you.”

“Always happy to oversee swordplay,” the boy said with a smile, “Jae can still walk, but not for much longer.”

Hilde smiled and mussed his son’s hair. “Ready to let Mama and Papa sleep for a bit?” he asked. Jae’s head bobbed in a tired nod. Hilde slid from his chair and sat on the ground trying to see if he could get to Lyn and Rohir without disturbing them. The dining room could get loud if the warriors stayed too late and Nils and Ri’ana allowed the mead to flow freely. In the end the Northern Captain decided it was too risky to try and move the children. “Let your Mama know they are here,” Hilde said to Aldrick, knowing Kammy would look after the little ones if they woke. “Come get us if there is any trouble otherwise, we’ll be back for them before she wants to turn in.” Aldrick nodded and rushed off hoping to catch some more stories after delivering the message to his mother. “Shall we be off? I’m sure Lyn and Rohir will be fine as long as Kammy’s here.”

“Yes. Why don’t you get Jae settled in. I’ll go see that Kisa finds her mother” Aditi chuckled as she looked down at the sleeping girl in her arms.

Hilde nodded and stood from where he sat. He looked to his son and scooped the little boy up, starting out of the room, “But I not tired Papa. And no one be in room to talk with.”

Hilde laughed, “It’s a clear night and the window will make lights on the ceiling, make shapes by connecting the lights until you’re sleepy,” he suggested, though he knew that Jae would more than likely be asleep before they made the room when not being tasked with walking.

Nils noticed Aditi and Hilde with Aldrick and Kisa. When Hilde started to leave with Jae in his arms the Lord of Old North turned to his Lady and smiled, “Appears that Kisa has played enough for the night.”

Ri’ana looked up and chuckled “So it seems. Do you want to tuck her in tonight or shall I?”

Nils gave a look around the hall, everyone was either family or part of the household, all of Krita’s soldiers were in their own temporary quarters. The young Lord thought about catching up more with his sister, but spied her whispering into Chance’s ear still and decided it could wait until tomorrow. “I’ll take her,” he said with a smile as he rose from his chair and started to meet Aditi in her approach.

Aditi smiled at Nils “Had half a mind to tuck her in with Lyn and Rohir under the table there. Let you and Ri get some time alone. Can’t imagine its very comfortable there for a darling princess though.” She chuckled as she handed the red headed girl to her father.

Nils laughed, “You’d be surprised where this one finds comfortable. I appreciate the offer, but I think that time alone will have to wait for another time.” He gave a smile and nod, “Kammy gonna look out for your others while they sleep? With only Jae maybe you and Hilde can get some time to relax.”

“Aye. Too risky to try and move them.” she smiled “We will come back down in a few hours to check on them. Enjoy the night...” She glanced to where Chance stood from his chair and offered a hand to Krita “And don’t worry, you will have all day tomorrow to be with your sister.”

Nils nodded, “I don’t keep her from her fun. I’m a bit jealous, and a bit worried that she won’t find something worth becoming serious about. I can tell she’s looking. I don’t think Chance is that however, and I’m not sure I’d want her to find her balance here in Old North. One of Lord Ammon’s children deserting him is enough.”

“Heh.” Aditi rubbed a hand at the back of her neck “Meaning no offense, Nils. I grew up in a rather disjointed family so its perhaps skewed my vision of family but. Lord Ammon gets what was coming to him. The day Freda and Krita leave Kronberg the better I say. Those girls deserve to get out and be themselves.” She shrugged “But then I’m just the First Mate” she winked.

“If Lord Ammon would let it lie there, then I would agree with you,” Nils said sadly. “He’s not built for this kingdom, to be a Lord of a part. He wants it all, seeing his children leave remind him that he doesn’t have that control here. He’d come after them. It’s a shame.” With his head shaking he gave a departing smile and held his daughter close as he retreated towards his wife and eventually their chamber within the citadel.

Krita took Chance’s offered hand and actually gave her brother a look of apology as she followed the younger man. “I don’t think I was shown to the guest rooms. That your job as my guide make sure I find the right room?”

“That it is My Lady. If you follow me I’ll make sure you find your way.” Chance smile roguishly.

Krita purred as she followed close to him, “You’ve already promised the Wolf to me for the night. I hope that you won’t be leaving once the way is found.”

“A promise is a Promise my lady. Do you trust me?” he questioned gently.

Krita almost froze but made herself continue to follow, “Trust has been a hard thing for me lately, Kin. I was burned by someone I thought I could trust. I trust you to fulfill your promise, and I trust you to show me a great time tonight, beyond that I don’t know who I can trust exactly.”

“Well. Tonight is all we need worry about for now. My Lady. Come.” His hand was firm in hers as he brought her arm up to lock with his

Krita nodded and gave an interested purr at his command, “Yes, my young Wolf, wherever you wish me to go.”

Chance took her the long way to the guest room. The way looped around the old Citadel of Old North, unfamiliar marking and runes carved into the old walls. The path also lead out into a garden that Lady Ri’ana had been working to clean and replenish from it’s overgrown state and soon to steps that wound it’s way up to the top of a tower that had a view of the city, right next to a waterfall that cascaded down upon the back of the citadel and into the city river. “Your room, My Lady” Chance grinned as he opened the door for her.

“Something tells me all the visitors don’t have that long of a path to their room,” she said coyly as she brushed against him stepping into the room. “I was hoping for the quick way here, but I rather enjoyed the sights, thank you Kin. Hopefully one day Papa, or whoever rules Kronnborg after will take the care with that city that has been taken here, it’s beautiful.”

Chance chuckled “Oh come now.” he grinned as he shut the door behind him “Even Kronnborg has something beautiful to see. You just have to take the time to see it.” Stepping up close to her he gently brushed his hands along her sides and cupped the small of her back “Pleasure is best when it’s had time to build after all.” he winked.

Krita chuckled as she leaned into him, “Guess I’ve got too much of my father in me, I’ve always thought pleasure was best taken quickly.” Her hands moved along his sides as she smiled looking into his eyes, “Could be I’m wrong, no one has made me take it slow though. As for Kronnborg, and this is the last I’ll speak of it, there is definite potential there, just needs a nurturing touch as opposed to an iron glove.”

“Mm...” Chance chuckled as he leaned in “Shall we test that theory?”

Krita nuzzled her head against his shoulder and took in a deep breath. Her hands held onto his sides holding herself against him, feeling his chest rise and fall with his own breaths. “You said that you are all mine, but I would very much enjoy following your lead and trying a new way.”

Lightly Chance kissed her lips and rumbled affectionately “As you wish, My Lady.”
