Chapter Monster (3)
I swallowed. Feeling like a little kid in front of him like he sometimes made me feel.
‘There was no other way, Dosch.’
He smirked. ‘Sure there wasn’t. You know Orion will kill you right? After he gets what he wants? He never plays fair.’ His words hit me hard. ’I even had to time my moment with you so that bodyguard doesn’t find out.’
‘That bodyguard has a name.’
‘Yeah, Andrew Ko. I know him.’
He knew him?
’Don’t underestimate who he has on your detail, Carina. That man is Vincent’s best man. He is the best fighter we have in the entire nation. Why would he be on your detail, huh?’
That took me aback.
’Yeah, I figured you didn’t know that. That man is a cold blooded killer. You know what his nickname on the streets is? The Widowmaker.’ My blood ran cold. ‘Those scars on his arms are one for each of his kills.’
I had seen his arm from front to shoulder, scarred with tight small lines. Each word Dosch said made me warier. I really did not understand why the bodyguard on my detail needed to be his best. He was not just protecting an asset. He needed me for more than the gun detail. I was sure of it now.
Dosch stepped closer. He saw I was upset by his words. ‘Carina…’ he dropped a little bit of his angry energy. He caressed my hair back behind my ears. ‘Be careful okay.’
I leaned into his touch, reaching out to him, needing him so badly suddenly I had to blink back tears, but he stepped back. ‘We can’t.’
Tears still formed. ‘I miss you.’ Please hold me. I stepped closer.
He flinched as if he was in pain and stayed silent for a couple seconds. He didn’t reach out for me, even though I had stepped even closer to his chest, with my head against his heart and arms around him tightly, breathing him in. I let out a trembling, shuttering breath at feeling him so close to me again. I could feel his heartbeat beating frantically against my ear. His arms hovering in the air, between holding me and pushing me away.
’Carina please.’ He stated through clenched teeth. ‘You need to stop missing me.’ But his words betrayed him. I could read between those lines any day. He had trouble uttering them.
Somebody knocked on the door.
‘Princess?’ It was Andrew. The Widowmaker. Our moment was broken. His hands did push me of, even though they were being gentle. I wasn’t sure but I even felt a small peck of his lips against the top of my head before Dosch hid himself behind the doorframe. Andrew opened the door. ‘Everything alright in there?’
‘Yeah, just looked for a spot to stash them.’ I threw the sneakers in the corner. ‘I’m good. Let’s go.’ Andrew frowned at me. Knowing something was up. He had the doorknob in his hand, his left hand where all the scars started. Just when I was sure he was about to walk in the room to look around, he said. ‘Let’s go downstairs.’ He grabbed my arm and guided me away from the room and away from Dosch. I didn’t even dare glance his way again, in fear of Andrew noticing my line of sight. If he was this dangerous, and Dominic’s enemy, I needed to protect my man. Because Dosch could try to push me away all he wants, but he was still mine. After this year was over I was planning on making Dosch part of my deal with Vincent. There would be no trade until we were allowed to be an item without consequences. Now that I figured out Vincent needed me for more than just the gun trade, I needed to find that leverage and really use it to get the Dosch deal in the mix. I was not living my life without him, he was another part of me.
