Fudge, I reincarnated as the heroine!

Chapter 5

Ah, how blissfully uneventful my life was until everything changed at my 5th birthday.

At dawn, a carriage appeared in front of granny’s bakery and escorted me and my mom to a huge building bustling with parents and their children. I even saw my friends there. The trip was quite long. It took a whole day and at night we just rested at an inn before arriving there the next day.

The city was way bigger than the town we came from. An early 30′s year old man that looked like a noble stepped forward. He had milky orange hair and grey-blue eyes. A perfect replica of him in chibi form was following behind him.

“I am viscount Frank Sarno, lord of Sarno city and you are my citizen! Welcome to this occasion as you will find out your children’s capabilities with the help of the regional temple. I will warmly receive the talented as the future of our small but prospering territory! You may proceed with the testing!”

We lined up as names were called one after the other. I only reached faster because names were in alphabetical order. As I entered the room, my mother looked at me expectantly, but from her warm look, she seemed as if even if I wouldn’t have magical powers, it will still be fine.

I was alone with a nun looking lady as I touched a crystal that allowed me to feel for the first time what mana is.

The lady was pleased.

“Since the mana crystal glowed, it means you are capable of utilizing mana and thus control magic.”

She took out a white stone.

“Touch this so that we find out the exact quantity of mana you have!”

I touched the white stone.

“Infuse your mana into the mana stone!”

I found out that it was easy to do that and after she swiped the stone on a sheet of paper, the following appeared.

Mana: 127,091

“Very good! Being a magician for you isn’t farfetched at all!”

“Is it high?”

“Well, the king of this country has about 500,000, so you can imagine it’s very desirable to have such a high number like you!”

“And what is the number a normal person has?”

“That would be about 1,000 or so but not all people have magical powers, even if we all posses mana!”

She politely answered my questions even if she had to test other children so I thanked her and held the other questions I had for someone else. I left and handed the certificate of magic to my mother. She hugged me and mumbled something I didn’t understand.

She got up and held my hand.

“Come! we have somewhere to go!”

I obediently followed my mother and we once again took a carriage that escorted us to the fortress at the centre of the city. The guards let us through the gates and we were greeted by an old bearded butler.

He led us to what I supposed was a greeting hall. I saw the man that held the speech early this morning and his chibi self that looked older than me.

“I see that you got my letter!”

The man looked in disgust at my mother and she knelt.

“As I thought, my child has potential! You may leave her here! I shall adopt her and give her my name. You can go now!”

I looked at my mother in terror. She brought me here in order to abandon me? But that’s not what my mother would do!?

She refused to lift her face, but two guards picked her up and dragged her outside.

I anxiously screamed for her not to leave me, but that man grabbed my shoulder.

“Now child, I am your father and your name now is...”

He paused and the butler handed him my certificate.

“You’re Ann Sarno, my daughter!”
