Chapter 15
The night David went through was something unlike anything he’d experienced before. There had always been dreams of some kind. This night, however, was like walking from one room to another. It seemed to end as soon as it started. One minute he closed his eyes, the next one he opened them and it was already morning. It was the most peculiar thing.
The good thing was that he felt rested. In a way. Somehow, he also felt like in a haze, like he had a light fever and you had the feeling like being slightly stoned, with your head constantly “swimming” ever so slightly.
He wasn’t quite sure what he’s experienced yesterday, but he knew he had to go back. Something momentous was happening in that forest and he was going to be part of it.
He wanted to check things first, that everything was safe, then he would share it with Ana and maybe the rest of the family. It already felt like his mind was deserting him, but Ana wouldn’t think he was going crazy. She’d had some paranormal experiences herself, as she was somewhat psychic and had a few close encounters with ghosts as well.
Yes, she’ll understand.
As soon as everything would be deemed safe, she would be the first to know. Together, they could decide what would be the best course of action. Definitely, that wouldn’t involve those US agents getting their hands on the device.
God forbid.
Who knew what they would do to a contraption like that? Probably take it apart and use it for some sinister purposes. It was hard to say how the evil minds of the people who ran the show worked, but it wasn’t good in any case.
I wonder how many scientists’ lives they destroyed because they were researching technology that was against their agenda.
He knew such thoughts were pointless, as they served no purpose and only made him worry about the future of humanity more. If only life could be enjoyed for the simple pleasures, while ignoring all the negative aspects. Mostly, it could be done, but sometimes those “negatives” came to haunt, just like was the case here.
Dawson was fuming.
When they arrived at the hotel, they found all the surveillance footage of the forest mysteriously gone. It had just vanished. None of the agents had an explanation for it. Even Jane, who was their computer expert, had no theory. She merely shrugged her head and said it must have been a computer glitch.
Fucking useless!
He was certain it wasn’t a computer glitch. The energy source they were looking for must have played a role in all of it. And he couldn’t find any proof of anything. He didn’t even know what he was looking for.
Now they had no proof to send to headquarters. They had absolutely nothing, no sign of progress. This was his one big chance of getting somewhere and it was biting him in the ass. He couldn’t call his boss and tell him that they had some footage, but it just vanished for reasons none of them could explain. Nope, he wouldn’t and couldn’t do that. It was like shooting yourself in the foot. They gave him as much time as he needed and he would take advantage of that.
All he needed was a way to incriminate the young man, in any way he could. He didn’t care anymore if he really did have anything illegal to hide. In his guts, he knew David was guilty of something and he would take him down. They had new cameras set up, the old ones still not working and obviously fried. Hopefully, the new cameras would record something they could use to make his career progress.
If not, he would have to catch David in the act, or ambush him somehow. He hadn’t really thought it through, but he was sure that given enough time, some ideas would pop into his head.
He would never illegally plant something on David. No, he was way too proud for that and way too law abiding, but he would do anything to make sure David would stop being a problem and danger for the good American people.
He let the other agents take turns in watching the video feed, while he retired to his room to think.
First, he needed to relax himself. The best way had always been to relieve himself. It always made him think better.
