Chapter 1 I Am the House–owner
It was a scorching summer day, with the sun beating down relentlessly.
Skye Hurley stood outside the shopping mall, working as a flyer, distributor under the blazing sun.
Suddenly, she noticed a young couple not far away entering the mall through a side entrance.
From behind, they looked like Skye’s boyfriend, Hugh Merchant, and her best friend, Rainie Leclerc.
But Hugh was supposed to be going for an interview that day.
Skye’s heart skipped a beat, and she hurriedly followed them.
However, upon entering the mall, she lost sight of them.
She circled around several times but couldn’t find them. After a while, her phone received a text message notification for a credit card transaction.
The amount was a staggering 10,000. And it was at the jewelry counter.

The purchase amount shocked Skye to the point where her hands trembled. It was her income for almost half a year.
Skye quickly found that counter where an attendant was putting a sparkling diamond ring on Rainie’s fair and delicate finger.
The diamond on the ring was large and exquisite, exactly the one Skye had been eyeing for a long time.
As Skye saw the satisfied smile on Rainie’s face, her mind went blank.
Hugh, who had been living off Skye and staying at Skye’s place during his unemployment for the past six months, actually swiped Skye’s card to buy a diamond ring for his lover.
What was wrong with that man?
Skye rushed over and snatched the ring from Rainie’s hand. She then handed it back to the attendant.
“I’m returning this ring.”
“Hey! I just bought this ring. What right do you have to return it?” Rainie shouted.
Skye slapped Rainie across the face.

“What are you doing?” At that moment, Hugh returned from the cashier’s desk. He held Rainie in his arms, looking at Skye with anger as he yelled,
“Just because I used some of your hard–earned money, you think it gives you the right to go crazy and hit people? Don’t you have any self–respect?”
Skye felt like her heart had been crushed. Betrayal, anger, and humiliation, all those feelings dyed her eyes a deep red.
“Says a man who used my money to support another woman!”
“Yeah! And what is wrong with that? Look at you. Which man would be attracted to someone like you?”
For the past six months, she had scrimped and saved to support Hugh, foregoing skincare products and wearing old clothes. But what had she received in return? It was his shameless betrayal!
As more and more rubberneckers gathered around, Hugh angrily threw the credit card and receipt in Skye’s face.
“Take it all back! All you care about is money! I’ve long been fed up with you.”
The cards hitting her face caused Skye physical pain, but the pain in her heart was even greater.

“Skye Hurley, a woman like you will end up lonely and alone. No man can tolerate you.” After saying that, Hugh took Rainie’s hand and left the mall.
Skye remained silent, stooping down to pick up the credit card and receipt from the ground. After completing the refund process, she went straight back to the rented house she shared with Hugh.
The house was a two–bedroom apartment, and Hugh and Skye each had their own room.
Ironically, she used to think that arrangement showed Hugh’s gentlemanly nature.
As soon as Skye entered the house, she started packing up Hugh’s belongings, preparing to kick him out.
While shaking the bed sheets, she suddenly discovered two used condoms.
Looking at the still “fresh” condoms, Skye extinguished the last trace of fantasy she had about Hugh.
One by one, she threw his packed belongings out of the door.
At that moment, Hugh returned with Rainie.

“Skye Hurley, have you gone mad? Who gave you the right to touch my things?”
Skye sat on the couch in the living room. Once, she had thought Hugh was the most handsome man in the world. But now, looking at him, she felt nothing but disgust.
“You came back at just the right time. Give me the key to the apartment. You’re not welcome here anymore. You’ll pollute my air.”
“Skye, are you kidding? I also contributed to the rent before. What gives you the right to make me move out?” Hugh yelled in anger.
“You said before yourself. Did you give me the rent for the past six months and the last two and a half years‘ worth of living expenses?”
Skye calmed down and attacked methodically.
Hugh couldn’t bear being pointed at and gossiped about by the surrounding neighbors, so he tried to smooth things over and buy some time.
“Skye, all you want is money, isn’t it? The rent for the past six months is just about five thousand dollars. So I owe you two thousand and five hundred. It’s only a month and a half of my

salary. Once I find a job, I’ll pay you back for those six months of rent.”
“Let’s give her the money now.” Rainie took out her phone and approached Skye. “Listen. If I pay for six months‘ rent, you’ll have to move out today.””
Rainie had done the math. She would only have to pay two thousand and five hundred dollars, while Skye had
contributed so much more than five thousand dollars. By paying the rent, Rainie would establish a good reputation in Hugh’s eyes.
Hugh was a graduate of an Ivy League university. He was a promising individual. In the past, he could earn six thousand dollars in a single month when he had a job!
Rainie looked at Skye, who nodded eagerly. The money was quickly transferred to Skye.
Then, with a smug expression, Rainie pointed toward the door. “Hurry up. Pack your things and leave!”
“No rush,” Skye calmly turned around and took out a property deed from the house.
“Take a good look at this.” Skye opened the property deed, clearly showing her name as the owner of the house.
“I am the owner of this house, and I’m reclaiming it today.”

“Skye, did you scam me?” Seeing the property deed, Hugh immediately flew into a rage. “You’re the actual owner, and yet you made me pay rent for so many years?”
“Isn’t it normal to pay rent for housing?” Skye shrugged innocently.
“You’re ruthless!” Hugh pointed a trembling finger at Skye. “I underestimated you before.”
“Skye, you’re despicable!” Rainie regretted the money transfer. She had lost her money and her place to live.
“Compared to you both, I’m actually the kindest person in the world.”
Skye opened the front door. “Take your belongings and get
out!”
Rainie wanted to continue causing a scene, but seeing the neighbors gathering around, Hugh quickly dragged Rainie
away.
Before leaving, he gave Skye a lingering look, scheming in his mind how to obtain ownership of the house.
After dealing with Hugh, Skye slumped against the wall, feeling exhausted.

She couldn’t help but think, “Well, at least now I won’t have to work multiple jobs to support a scumbag anymore.”
But just as she let out a sigh of relief, her phone started ringing. Skye lowered her head and saw that it was a call from her little brother, Max Hurley.
“Skye, Grandma has been diagnosed with cancer. The surgery costs one hundred thousand dollars. I don’t have the money. I…” Max’s voice broke as he burst into tears over the phone.
