Chapter 23 Mackenzie’s Scheme
“Camila, please reconsider this for Mackenzie’s sake. If you remember taking the money, just put it back, and I’ll pretend this never happened. What do you think?”
Camila was furious. Wasn’t this forcing her to admit taking
the 16 thousand dollars?
“Mr. Wescot, I don’t think there’s any need to think about it further. I didn’t take it. You can do whatever you want.”
Camila turned and left the manager’s office, going straight to the surveillance room. She wanted to check the footage from the past few days since she had been away but was told the recordings had mysteriously been deleted and nothing could be found.
Camila returned to her office and opened the safe. The place where the 16 thousand dollars had been was indeed empty.
She checked the other items. Nothing else was missing.
Next, she called her former assistant who had resigned.
The assistant took a long time to answer the call.
Camila asked why she had resigned. The assistant said it was because she had found a better job. Camila then asked about the 16 thousand dollars, since the assistant had been there the last time Camila had opened the safe before taking leave.
The assistant hemmed and hawed. She couldn’t get a full sentence out. Finally, she just reminded Camila to watch out

for Mackenzie, since she might have a copy of the safe key.
Just then, Mackenzie walked in.
“Camila, I advise you to hurry and put those 16 thousand dollars back. Otherwise, if Mr. Wescot reports it to the police, you’ll have no way to talk yourself out of it.” Mackenzie threatened.
Camila put down the phone and looked coldly at Mackenzie. “How would I have no way out? You go to Mr. Wescot’s office every day. So you had plenty of opportunity to access the safe key. Shouldn’t fingers be pointing at you first?”
Mackenzie’s expression changed immediately as she heard
this.
“Camila, be careful making accusations without proof. You’re the finance director. The money went missing under your supervision. Don’t make baseless allegations.”
“Fine, let’s call the police now to investigate. Even without the surveillance footage, there are fingerprints. They’ll be able to find clues,” Camila said angrily.
“Call the police? Have you thought this through? You’re the prime suspect here. The police will take you in for questioning first. Whether you did it or not, don’t expect to get out until the investigation ends. Isn’t your grandma hospitalized for surgery? Aren’t you afraid no one will be able to take care of her?”
Camila was stunned. She suddenly felt Mackenzie was making a lot of sense, her thinking very meticulous, somewhat like Samson’s.

Camila then recalled the surveillance recordings being deleted. She remembered Samson had hacked the school’s computers before to change grades for his classmates.
Seeing Camila remain silent, Mackenzie thought she was afraid and continued, “Camila, we’ve been classmates and colleagues for so many years. Now that you’re in trouble, I can’t just stand by and watch, so I thought of a way to help you get through this.”
“What way?” Camila felt more and more like Mackenzie had come prepared.
Sure enough, Mackenzie said fidgetingly, “I’ve also saved up some money over the years, around 32 thousand dollars. I want to give it to you, first, so you can return the company’s money, and second, so you can pay for your grandma’s treatment.”
“What’s the catch?”
“The condition is you sell me your apartment.”
“You want to buy my apartment for just 32 thousand dollars?” Camila was surprised Mackenzie was still after her apartment. Truly, people’s greed had no bounds.
“If you feel it’s not enough, I can add another 16 thousand, but you’ll have to sign an IOU since 32 thousand is all I can give now.”
“30 thousand dollars? Do you even have that much money?” Mackenzie had just covered 10 thousand dollars of rent for Samson recently. As far as Camila knew, her paltry savings should’ve been used up by now.

“Don’t worry about that, just tell me if you’ll sell me your apartment,” Mackenzie said confidently, “If so, we can sign the contract right away.”
Camila narrowed her eyes and said, “I won’t. I said I wouldn’t sell my apartment to you or Samson no matter what.”
“Camila, don’t be ungrateful. I’m trying to help you here.”
“Well, I appreciate the thought,” Camila said, approaching Mackenzie and unexpectedly smiling. “Mackenzie, go tell Samson not to try anything sneaky anymore. Didn’t he learn his lesson last time?”
“What do you mean?” Mackenzie was somewhat unnerved seeing Camila’s smile.
On the way to the hospital, Camila contemplated whether it was possible to recover the deleted surveillance footage if Samson really had remotely deleted it.
She suddenly thought of Maxwell.
Camila arrived at the hospital. Gemma had just undergone surgery last night and was weak, but was very happy to see Camila.
She told Camila that Hudson had come to see her that
morning with his girlfriend, and asked if Samson had been especially busy lately since she hadn’t heard Camila mention him.
Camila didn’t want Gemma to worry so she said Samson had gone abroad and wouldn’t be back until next year.

Camila smiled bitterly within.
In the afternoon, Camila went to see Gideon.

As she passed through the clinic lobby, someone suddenly called out to her.
Camila turned around to see Samson and Mackenzie.
“Do you need something?” They were the last two people Camila wanted to see.
“We came to see your grandma. Why didn’t you answer our calls?” Mackenzie said.
“Who told you to come?” Camila said in surprise, “My grandma needs no care from you. Leave.”
“Hey, how can you be like this? We’re classmates at least. Isn’t
it only right for us to come see how your grandma is doing since she’s sick?”
Camila was furious. She had never seen someone so
shameless.
“Mackenzie, from the moment you and Samson betrayed me, you two are just strangers to me. I don’t want anything more to do with you.”
“What happened?” Just then, Dewitt had just arrived for work. He walked over to Camila’s side in casual clothes and asked concernedly.
“It’s nothing. Just ran into some acquaintances.”

Mackenzie’s heart skipped a beat when she saw the tall and handsome Dewitt. So handsome and so gentle.
“Camila, is this your husband?” Mackenzie was green with jealousy.
“He…”
Before Camila could reply, Samson rushed over and grabbed her wrist, yelling angrily, “Camila, you just met him a few days ago, and you married him?”
“What’s it to you?” Camila was also incensed. “Who are you to me now? What right do you have to yell at me?”
“Camila, we broke up less than half a month ago. Did you two know each other beforehand and hide it from me?” Samson yelled loudly, attracting a lot of onlookers.
“So what if we did? You can fool around, but I can’t have a change of heart?” Camila was furious and spoke without thinking.
Samson slapped her across the face.
