Chapter 16
Fauna turned and looked at Em and then they both got up and hurried for the garage.
She didn't get down the steps before Tim appeared with Firo and Ava.
She looked at the woman in the large fae's arms. Ava had never seemed helpless before. Right now, unconscious and surrounded by his arms, she looked small and frail.
"Focus on what you're doing, Sparx; we'll let you know as soon as we do." Em was holding Reagan's phone and moving around bikes toward Firo.
Fauna looked to see Tim standing at the garage door, looking out it. His sword was held beside his leg. He was on watch.
Her heart sped up. Were they expecting someone to show up?
Capri moved quickly over to Firo and put her hand on Ava's head. "Do we need the doctor back here?"
Firo barely glanced at her. "No. This is magic." With a pained expression, he leaned closer to Ava's. "I need Mystral-I can't focus. Aireese needs to stay and the caves just in case the woman returns. Capri nodded. "I'll get in touch with Mystral." She touched Ava's face with a tender look on her face and then ran back into the house.
Firo carried Ava to the steps and sat down.
Fauna wanted to do something, but there was nothing she could do, so she went over to stand beside Tim. "What happened?"
He looked down at her, his expression briefly changed. "The curtained area..."
Fauna sucked in a breath. "We could have..."
Tim shook his head. "No. This was something that happened to her in the past." He scanned the alleyway and then looked back at her. "That woman was involved."
Someone gasped. Fauna turned to see it was Capri. She'd never seen her look that upset before. "Bring her inside, Firo."
The fae stood up and turned. Fauna felt her eyes water. The way he was holding her and looking at her was the kind of thing everyone wanted to have. Ava jerked in his arms, shoved away from him, and jumped to the bottom of the stairs. She was breathing like she'd just been running. Her wings appeared dark and full and then extended out beside her shoulders.
"Avalie," Firo said calmly.
Ava jerked her chin and looked at him. Her eyes were glazed over. "It wasn't my fault." She winced and grabbed her head between her hands. "I didn't-I didn't-ahh." She jerked upright again and moved toward the open door. "Avalie. You need to calm yourself." Firo moved behind her.
"Calm?" Ava didn't turn to look at him, just glared out into the alley. "I need to hunt her down." Her wings lifted.
A burst of energy hit Fauna with enough force she stepped back.
Tim moved in front of her. He reached back and held her behind him. The sword was raised, but he wasn't pointing it at Ava. He was just ready.
"Ava."
Fauna looked to see Sym standing on the steps with Capri. That's when she noticed Capri's hair was now moving.
"Shoot." Sym cursed, went under the handrail, and jumped down into the garage. "Ava." She brushed her black hair back from her eyes. "Ava." Her tone was gentle.
Fauna realized Sym was using her ability to project feelings at Ava. She clung to the back of Tim's shirt. They didn't normally use their powers against each other.
Sym skirted around Tera's bike and ducked under Ava's wing so she was in front of her. "Ava." She put her hand out but didn't touch her. "Just breathe," Sym whispered in a tone that sent goosebumps up Fauna's arm. "Just breathe." She whispered again.

Fauna held her breath as Ava lowered her wings. The intense vibrations ceased.
"Breathe," Ava repeated and slowly lowered herself to the cement floor.
Firo leaned down and scooped her up into his arms again.
"Firo. It hurts." Ava said breathlessly and then closed her eyes.
"Bring her inside." Capri looked at Sym. "Wait for Mystral."
Sym nodded. "Yeah."
Capri eyed Tim for a moment but didn't say anything, just held the door open for Firo.
Sym heaved a loud sigh and looked at Tim and then Fauna. "That was intense." She went outside to stand in the alley.
Em was the only one left in the garage. She looked at the door to the house, brushed her hair back over her curls, and held her hand on top of her head.
Fauna stepped away from Tim. "Would you really have hurt Ava?"
Tim turned and looked at her. Several emotions crossed his face. "I don't know, but I wasn't letting her hurt you."
Em sat on the closest bike. "Your eyes were red." She pinned him with a 'what the hell' look.
"Why?" Fauna studied his face. His eyes were the normal dark shade, but they were filled with secrets. His jaw was tense. "What is going on?" She had definitely missed something. They weren't on the mountain now. He wasn't responsible for her.

"I could tell you." Em got off the bike and walked over. Her gaze was on Tim until she was in front of Fauna. "--but I don't think it's my place."
Tim eyed her before looking at Fauna. He had an apologetic look on his face now.
"She's here." Sym touched Fauna's shoulder. "Puzzles later. Ava is the priority."
Fauna nodded and turned to see Mystral walking gracefully toward them.
"Where is she?"
Fauna motioned to the steps.
Mystral hurried over to them.
Fauna looked at Tim; she hoped her expression said 'to be continued' because they were going to continue this talk.
"Tim." Reagan came out the door. "They need you back there. They found something on the end of that other tunnel. Rafael is coming to get you; it's all hands-on." Fauna stopped at the top of the stairs and looked at Tim. "Be safe."
He nodded and sheathed his sword before turning to watch for the prince.
