Chapter 28: A whole lot of History
I was seated next to Olive in History class like I always had done since the beginning. She was the only friend I had in this class besides Jax, who was sitting in the same seat as he had done on earth. The last bench on the left, right behind me.
On the bench to my right, Melixes and Sebastian were full on making out. Which was gross, but fine by me since they weren’t focused on making my life as miserable as possible at the moment. Sebastian still had his schizophrenic moments, one day he was flirting me to death and the next he was watching me tumble into a fountain at Neverlake and not helping me at all. He was giving me some serious whiplash from all the back and forth he was doing.
Otto and Dexar were a bench in front of me, Otto slyly glancing towards me and Olive from the corners of his eyes. The guy always creeped me out.
A text pinged on my Telvice and I opened it. I saw I had three texts and a missed call from Sky.
Sky: OMG Lux, there is a cocktail party at the Broom this Friday!
There was also a text from Ash reminding me to do my cardio workout tonight. He was my very own health police.
Kai had send me a heart emoji. We were having date night tonight and I would be staying at his dorm. Butterflies erupted in my stomach thinking about him. It had been two months now, even though we’ve had a rough patch in the last two weeks with the Ash thing, I was willing to give it one more chance.
Miss Emmingbroth, a young female teacher with a short brown bob cut, was starting to begin her lesson and I quickly put away my Telvice.
Olive had not been feeling well all morning, so she hastily bid her goodbye’s and went back to her dorm room to sleep it off.
As soon as she had left Jax tapped my back so I bit a harsh ‘what?’ between clenched teeth.
‘Did you ask Oak yet about teaching you about the Fae?’ he asked out of the blue.
Jax had been stalking me for the past few weeks to get my knowledge about Faerie up. He was still on his own warpath regarding the destruction of earth. I felt every bit as angry as he did, but I also was smart enough to realise that one human girl would not be taking down the Fae army anytime soon. And so wouldn’t Jax Skylar, even though he was a force to be reckoned with if his mind was made up. I was more focused on just surviving and my own mental health these days.
‘No I haven’t.’ I spit back and that was the truth. Between trying to blend in as one of the only humans in Rivellin, making new friends, juggling all these new classes, training each day and making my relationship with Kai work I did not have time to ponder the impending death of the Fae. I was making it my priority as soon as things settled down for me.
‘Well, let’s talk about it this weekend.’ He whispered darkly. As if he had an entire war plan scheduled out and wanted to show that to me. I was going to the Maddox estate on Saturday, I had been staying on campus for the last two months during weekends because Sky had stayed too. But I had to see Maddox sometimes, since he had basically adopted me and provided me with a great life all thanks to him.
The door opened, halting Jax and Miss Emmingbroth in their monologues’. It was Dominic Rios. Sly smile on that ridiculous handsome face, dressed in black dress pants and tight fitting black dress shirt as usual. His presence was instantly overwhelming. He was the focal point of any room and it had nothing to do with his impressive height. He was just that intense.
He had not been in this class for the last two months. I had only seen him at Poison study, that was probably because he could actually be bothered to be interested in that subject.
He gave the professor a quick two fingers to the forehead salute before he sauntered over to my desk with as much suavemente as he could muster.
’Carina.’ He greeted me and sat down without another word in Olive’s seat. I had to deal with his ass the entire poison study class and I hardly ever learned anything there because of it, he was not about to do the same for my history grades. Now that I think about, very weird Olive got sick all of a sudden.
Professor Emmingbroth didn’t even bother addressing Dosch. She and every other professor at school besides Oak and Ash, had a certain fear of him. Which was smart, because he was dangerous and I should remember that.
I really should.
‘What are you doing here?’ I whispered. Knowing he was about to launch his usual banter at me, trying to rile me up. Somehow he made it his personal challenge to get me as riled up as possible during each class. He found it and I quote ’very sexy when you get all flushed like that, Carina.’
He just smirked. ‘Trying to get my History knowledge up.’
I snorted. I did not believe that one bit.
He stayed strangely quiet for the rest of the class. Professor Emmingbroth explained some really interesting things to us. That all Rainers used to be Fae.
Since ‘the Age of Aries Wars’ happened, the Rainers and Fae have been split by a Wall of Nebulae Energy, erected by the then ruling queen of the Summer court: Queen Maeve, the winter court was ruled by King Lionel.
Both sides are also at war on the fae side of the wall, which was a giant Aurora Borealis like wall, that shines like a patch of oil on water, which is impenetrable for anyone who lacks magic. It lay on the border of Rivellin, what I had already figured out in Geography a while back.
Only Fae, half fae or bonded Rainers possess magic, so they are the only ones that can cross. The Fae have put on this wall to protect themselves from the Rainers, who suffer from a horrible curse, making having children just possible for one in every hundred females.
The Rainers apparently also want nothing to do with magic and are happy the wall is up. Occasionally one or two Fae come through, to commit kidnappings and crimes against the Rainers, for unknown reasons. So the cold war is actually still ongoing.
Each Rainer has to train in several fighting techniques from a young age onwards to protect themselves. They are also taught to fight with weapons and magic blocking ones as well. Which explained why literally every Rainer I’ve met is good at fighting.
The wall interested me though. If it was as spectacular as they say I really wanted to take a good look at it one day.
’Don’t hurt your pretty face thinking so hard, Carina.’ His deep voice whispered in my ear, making me break out in goosebumps.
I had not even registered what he was saying, being so focused on the wall information that I saw the rest of the class had already left, except for him.
I sighed. ‘Well, someone’s got to do the thinking around here.’
He chuckled. I gave zero fucks about pissing him off and he liked that. A lot, apparently, by the way he was eye-fucking me now and licking his lips.
‘What’s with the sudden interest in History all of a sudden?’ I added, to distract him.
’There’s an interest in History class for me.’ He rose from his seat and left me rooted to the spot with those parting words.
