Chapter 17
I told Alecto to go back and oversee the pack and enforce border patrol as Isis and I rounded up the dead cattle bodies into a pile to be burned. It was a waste of food but we did not want to risk anything with the pack. I ordered a few pack warriors to come help us out and informed my father of the situation through the pack-link.
It was late in the day, the sun was high in the sky and my body was ridden with sweat. My plaited button up was now off and I was left in my tank top. I heaved a sigh as I pushed the last body into the fire. I wiped my forehead and placed my hands on my waist as I looked around the field at my pack warriors who were there to help.
I thought about what I was going to tell my pack but I couldn’t come up with anything but the truth. These kills were done by hunters, that meant they were near and were bold enough to enter into our territory unnoticed.
I moved to go grab a water bottle that was brought up earlier by the pack warriors, I drank it down greedily.
“Izzy, can you finish the rest?” I asked. I wanted to head back to see my mate—being so newly mated I was feeling a strong pull to be close to him and being away almost a whole day was already pushing it far.
“Yes, we can finish the rest.” Isis replied.
“Also, can you send out trackers to this area to see what they can find out for me?” I asked as I bent down to pick my button up.
“Got it, boss.” She answered with a smile and began walking back up to the pack warriors.
I ran back towards the pack house. My territory was a 70 miles radius almost all around, in the center was my pack house and many other homes that were also built on the side for those who decided to live on their own if they wanted to. I got about halfway back home when my ears perked up and I caught a foreign scent. My body immediately halted and I turned towards the smell.
“I can smell you.” I said loud enough.
There were a few movements behind a bush until I saw two males step out. They weren’t from my pack and from their scent I knew they were rogues.
“You are on my territory, rogues. I suggest you leave before I tear your throats out.” I moved closer to them, careful to never miss a moment.
“How lucky are we to land an Alpha? One who is a female too?” One of the rogues snickered and they sauntered toward me. I snarled at their disrespect. It had been a couple months since rogues had crossed my territory. I was surprised to see them today.
“I think we are going to stay.” The other one spoke up.
“Suit yourself. Your skin will look as good as my rug.” I murmured as they shifted into their wolves and charged towards me.
The black one jumped at me with his teeth bare, preparing to go in for an easy kill. Since I hadn’t shifted yet they thought I would be easy. I jumped up on a branch before swinging behind them. They put their paws out to stop them from moving further when they noticed I was no longer in front of them. I let out a laugh and shook my head. The lighter colored wolf snarled and came after me. I grabbed it around the neck and held it in a tight grip, pulling him close to me. He snapped his jaw and swiped his claws at me but I moved behind him, my arms wrapping around his neck.
“Now do you regret not leaving?” I taunted before twisting my arms in a motion that snapped his neck. His body immediately went limp beside me. I dropped his body and turned to the other wolf. He growled, baring his teeth and leaned down on his front paws.
The rush of the kill was running through me like running water. The black wolf came charging and jumped at me. My foot snagged in a root that was sticking out on the ground and had me tumbling. The black wolf took the opportunity to get on top of me. I held his jaw as he snapped at me. His claws were coming out to rip at my shirt and there was instant pain that went through me as he did.
“Fvcking rogues.” I muttered and flipped him off me. I stood up as he scrambled to his paws. I broke into a run and when I reached him my fist came out hitting him square in the side. He whimpered as he fell over. My foot came out and stepped on his front leg, I heard a crack. I kicked his stomach and he flew a yard away from me.
“You think I will kill you?” I murmured as I got to his side and pinned him down. “Think again. Shift!”
The rogue snarled and twisted in my grip on him but I tightened. My grip and he let out a whine before shifting below me.
“Good boy.” I taunted and he growled at me.
“Fvck you.”
I clicked my tongue and shook my head, “Disrespect. Insolence. Disgusting rogues.”
I gripped his hair tight and yanked back. He was bigger in size but his arm was badly broken which gave me a better advantage.
“I thought you were going to kill me.” He spat out.
“No, I think I might have a need for you.” I said with a grin and hit him at the back of his neck, knocking him unconscious.
I pack-linked Alecto to come pick up the prisoner and burn the dead body. He was surprised that there were any in our territory but quickly followed orders. I waited until he came before leaving. I ordered Alecto to take the prisoner to our dungeons and I would question him later.
When I made it back to the pack house it was dark and I was hungry. My mate was long forgotten until I saw him on top a hill with a frown on his face as he stood waiting for me. His legs spread apart and his arms crossed. I sighed and walked up to him.
“What the hell happened to you?” He growled out.
“Rogues.”
He took off his shirt and put it over my body.
“We are going to have a talk.” He demanded as he led me inside.
