Chapter 14
Dante
From my study I can smell as the crone’s stench finally begins to dissipate moments later I hear the front doors slam shut. I rise from my desk so that I can join Eve downstairs, curious about what she may have learned. I find it infuriating that I have not been able to hear her thoughts clearly since the other night, yet she now seems to be able to hear mine just fine. Before I even reach the door to my study I hear the front doors open and slam shut again. I run down the hall taking the stairs 2 at a time as I head out the front door just in time to see Eve disappear into the forest. Faros is scratching at the surface trying to break free as I run after her.
‘We need to catch her before she gets hurt!’ he shouts.
‘What do you think I am doing?’ I growl back at him.
‘We could run faster you know.’ he barks out at me. I know what he means and he is right. I bow my head letting him take control with the sound of bones cracking and heavy breathing rip through the air with his paws hitting the forest floor as takes off running.
Within moments I know he has her scent and is hot on her heels. We both can feel the surge of energy in the air and hear the thunder sounding like zeus cracking a whip in the sky about us. We are close and Faros knows it. His pace slows to a near stop as he looks forward as we near a small clearing. Eve is on the ground on her hands and knees with wind swirling around her. Faros and I stand in awe as we watch a glowing beast emerge from the forest before her. I want to yell out and warn her of the danger as Fasor stands still with his jaw hanging open. We watch as Eve reaches out toward the beast and with a blinding flash of light the beast is pulled into her with the two of them merging into one being. Faros waits a moment as the wind around her fades into nothing more than a gentle breeze. Slowly he stalks toward her until we are right beside her. He nudges her with his muzzle eliciting a giggle from her. He raises his head and she raises hers, but her eyes are no longer the pale gray blue eyes I have fallen in love with. Staring back at us are glowing lavender eyes that have Faros mesmerized.
‘Mate.’ Faros only speaks one word, but that one word carries more meaning than anything the old wolf has ever said before.
I feel the cracking of my bones as Faros relinquishes control and I shift back into my human form.
“Eve…but how?” I question as I cup her face in my hands.
“A gift from my father it seems.” her response makes her smile which has me melting at the sight.
“Your father was a wolf?! Did you not know?” My questions whipping past my lips before fully forming in my own head.
“No. My mother never told me anything about him aside from the fact that he left after finding out she was pregnant.” her words obviously stinging as she speaks them. “We have much to talk about Dante.”
“It would seem we do!” I chuckle as I reply.
Over the next hour she tells me of what the elder shared with her. I could tell the part about Sedira Hurt her greatly as she fought back tears with her taking on the responsibility of sharing her mothers dark secrets. I hurt greatly at her admission, but I am not sure what hurt more..hearing the truth after all these years, or seeing the pain she felt over the atrocities her mother committed for the sake of power. She felt great guilt for her mothers actions which saddened me even more. When she told me of the binding spell that her mother had forced the elder to perform, things started to make sense. The spell not only made her powers lie dormant all these years, but her wolf was affected as well. The elder was not wrong. The goddess had never allowed such a being to exist. Mixing the bloodlines would grant the offspring unparalleled power and an unnaturally long life. So why had the goddess made an exception for Eve? Still so many unanswered questions, but I could not dwell on them right now as I was simply too entranced by the beautiful woman next to me…the questions about the balance of the universe could wait.
