Fated is overrated

Chapter 154

Zane POV

The heartbeat is getting louder with each step, igniting my hope that it is Lola's. Lance takes a few more steps and the heartbeat is now loud and clear. Lance dips his head through the top layer of body parts.

Even though we are ruthless beasts at most times, we shiver at the thought of our precious mate being covered in blood and gore. And limbs. Even though it is probably her own doing. The smell of amber wood and jasmine hits our nose, and Lance starts frantically nudging off limbs here and here, before revealing our mate.

My heart is hammering in my chest for having found her. Lance shifts back so I can pick her up, and I almost trip over my own feet with how fast I am trying to get to her. She is unconscious, but she is breathing.

Perhaps I should have rushed her back to dragon castle for the medics there, but instead I find myself teleporting us back to our own hospital. I rush through the doors and start barking out orders towards the nurses who have quickly gathered. "Get me a bed and get doctor Williams, NOW!". The nurses start scrambling around quickly, and I lay her unconscious body on the bed while quickly covering up her body. Lance is pacing around frantically in my head, whimpering softly.

The nurses start hooking her up to all sorts of machines, before the doctor barges through the doors. He rushes over to Lola, checking her vitals, before asking me "what happened?". "I don't know doc" I reply, but I quickly add over mind link 'there is one thing you need to know. She is a Lycan, but also a dragon. She may respond differently to treatment.

Can you get in touch with a dragon doctor, or should I go get one?'. I can tell he is shocked by my revelation, maybe even a little fearful, so I add don't worry, she is harmless. But, she is to be treated like you would Zeke or I. She is our Queen'.

I look over at her bloodied body, and I can imagine the doctor thinking she isn't as harmless as I have just stated. He just doesn't know the blood on her hands isn't exactly that of the innocents.

I am sure he has also heard the stories about her, ever since the day she annihilated Ilona. Although everyone understood her reasoning, many were extremely fearful of the sheer power she displayed, and news traveled quickly. This book has many missing chapters and scenes if you're not reading it on [J]obnib.c[o]m. And honestly, if I didn't know she was such a good person, I might be too. It's always tricky when 1 person has that much power.

But then again, I'm sure the gods wouldn't have blessed her so much if she wouldn't be able to handle it. 'Yes my prince. Please, for the sake of her healing process, remain close to her while we work on her' he replies curtly, but I am positive he isn't asking for the healing, I can tell he is fearful of her.

I nod at him, before shifting my eyes back to my mate. As the doctor is dishing out orders to the nurses, they are rushing the bed towards one of the rooms. Once in the room and seated, I sit idly by her side while they are fussing around my unmoving mate. Even in this state, I can't help but find her the most beautiful woman alive.

I growl lowly while the nurses are cleaning her naked body. I know it needs to be done, but I feel extremely protective right now. Not to mention possessive, as Lycan Alpha's naturally are.

The nurses are looking at me fearfully, and I know my eyes are shifting between Lance's black ones and mine, but I just can't control him in this state. He is scratching at the edges of my mind, basically frothing at the mouth, to get out. Once she is all cleaned up and dressed in a hospital gown, the doctor reenters the room and speaks up "her vitals are all good, albeit that her heart rate is on the low side. I can't find anything wrong with her.

She just seems to be in a very deep sleep". I stare at her silently, willing for her to wake up, but she doesn't." Is there anything I can do?" I ask the doctor, while keeping my eyes trained on Lola. "Just being close to her will lend her strength.

But I'm afraid that's all you can do". "Thanks doc. How is Zeke doing?" his face turns grim, and I know it's not looking good. He hesitates before speaking up "they are still in surgery. But from what I understood, the damage is severe. Too severe for his Lycan to heal on his own.

The surgery will fix the vital organs that have been hit, and we can stitch up the puncture wound. But his Lycan will still need to heal him in order for him to... live" he gulps the last part.

Tears start to well up in my eyes as realization hits me like a ton of bricks. The realization that I could actually lose my brother today, my best friend. And although our natural instincts to protect our mate are insanely strong and we couldn't ignore it no matter how strong our mate is, Lola was right.

She was using the force fields to protect others, to protect us. And if we hadn't bypassed it with my teleporting, Zeke wouldn't be clinging to life by a thread right now. And who knows - perhaps Lola wouldn't have been unconscious from whatever went down afterwards either. Because, let's face it, Lola was more than capable of handling it by herself. It was an absolute bloodbath from the small army she had defeated all on her own, without as much as a scratch on herself. But it's all too late now.

An idea suddenly comes to mind, so I ask the doctor. "Once Zeke is out of surgery, would it be possible to put his and Lola's bed together in the same room, next to each other? That would stimulate both their healing, right?".

That way Lex and Liberty could draw strength from each other. "That is a brilliant idea!" the doctor exclaims, before seeming to be deep in thought about something.

I give him some time to work out whatever is on his mind, before he pipes up "you all haven't marked each other, right?". "No we haven't". He ponders on it some more, before hesitantly speaking up "marking one another would support the healing for the marked mate as well, you know....
