Chapter 21
"What the hell was that, Cassie?" Derek asked the supermodel after Rachel left. "What's the meaning of that stunt you just pulled?"
"I don't know what you are upset about," said Cassie nonchalantly. "Weren't you the one that invited me?"
"Again, that was last week," said Derek with forced patience. "Besides, you should have called me before showing up here unannounced. Now see what you've caused." Cassie scoffed in disbelief. "Oh, please. Don't tell me you're pissed with me because of that baby elephant that just stormed out of here."
Derek saw red. His face hardened and his hands clenched into fists.
"Don't you ever talk about Rachel in that manner again, do you hear me?" He thundered. "Let this be the last time you refer to her as such." Cassie was shocked by Derek's reaction. She took one step back, not out of fear, but from bewilderment at his response.
"Good gracious, Derek. Calm down. Who is she by the way?"
"She's none of your business," he said dismissively. "You have to leave now."
"Are you kidding? Is that a joke?"
"Am I laughing?" he asked with a hard face.
"But I only just got here. Where am I supposed to go?"
"Go to a hotel or wherever, I'll pay."
It was Cassie's turn to be angry.
"Now hold on a damn minute, Derek. I have had enough of this craziness with you. What do you think I am? A stuffed animal with no feelings?"
"I'm not in the mood for your tantrum, Cassie."
"Do you think you can just call me anytime you like and have me running to you, no questions asked, and then push me around as you like? I'm a fucking human being with feelings, damn it!" "I'm aware of that, but you showed up here at the wrong time," Derek insisted.
"I left work, friends, and even family to travel all the way here because I thought you needed company, and this is how you treat me?" Cassie fired back.
His feelings softened and his conscience began to prick him because of how harsh he'd been towards her. It wasn't her fault that she'd come here to visit him because he was the one who had called her and even sent her his address.
It wasn't fair that he was now blaming her for how things played out in front of Rachel. He should have told Rachel about Cassie and all his other 'non-girlfriend' girlfriends.
"I'm sorry, Cassie. You're right, I should have known better than to blame you for my own error," he conceded. "You can stay here and return to New York tomorrow."
"That's better," she said with a dramatic sniff. "I'm hungry."
"Would you like an apple pie?"
"Ew! Do I look like a first grader to you?"
"I love apple pie and I'm not a first-grader," he said dryly.
"Whatever. I want a salad."
"Ok. I'll order it right away."
"Why don't we just go out and eat instead?"
Derek shook his head. "Nah, I've got some work to do at the office."
"Cool, I'll ride with you and scout for a nice restaurant on the way."
"Cassie, my office is here, inside this house."
She stared at him. "Why? Did you come to Atlanta to become a hermit?"
"Something like that," he admitted.
"How did you then meet that woman, Rachel?"
"We met before we came to Atlanta."
"You guys came here together?"
"No."
"I'm not going to get any more information from you about her, am I?" she asked when he didn't explain his deal with Rachel any further.
"I don't want to talk about her," said Derek. His mood sank and he didn't feel like doing anything anymore.
But now that Cassie was here, he needed to put some distance between himself and her. He didn't want her to get the wrong idea now that he was letting her stay. "I'll just go into my office and get my credit card for you," he said wearily.
"Oh, never mind about that now," she said with a dismissive wave of her slim hand. "Let's just order in instead."

He sighed. "I thought you wanted to go to a restaurant?"
"I change my mind. I'm allowed to do that, aren't I?"
"Sure."
"Let's order some sushi and a bottle of vintage wine," she said with a grin. "And then when we are done eating, you'll take me upstairs and ravish me thoroughly on that ginormous bed of yours." "Cassie..."
"Fine. We can start on the couch and finish on the bed. How does that sound?"
"Not exciting," he said flatly.
She frowned. "What's wrong with you?"
"Listen, Cassie, I don't want to argue with you. Just go out and eat, ok? You know what? You can do some shopping too while you're at it. Just go out and have fun. Call any of your friends in Atlanta and hang out with them too." "Why do I feel as if I'm being disposed of?"
"You're not. I just need a couple of hours alone, that's all."
She shrugged. "If you want to sit indoors and spend the rest of your day brooding, be my guest. I am never going to turn down an opportunity to shop when I'm not the one paying. Where's that credit card of yours? Bring it out, darling. I'm about to make it rain!"

It took Cassie another half an hour to leave the house. She had to reapply her makeup and change her outfit. According to her, she didn't want the paparazzi to catch her rocking the same outfit she wore from New York to Atlanta. Then she added some clip-ins to her hair to make it waist-length. She was sure that was the best look for the figure-hugging jumpsuit she'd changed into.
After Cassie finally left, Derek let out a sigh of relief. He was going to put her on a plane back to New York, first thing in the morning. For now, he needed to sort things out with Rachel.
It had taken her a long time to let down her guard and trust him, and now he and Cassie had blown that away today. He jogged down to her apartment and knocked on her front door with his heart in his mouth.
"Hey, Rachel - " he began to say when she opened the door.
"No, Derek. I'm not doing this with you," she said, not making any move to invite him in. "I'm not going to engage in a lengthy back-and-forth with you over your drama. I don't have the energy for that."
"I wish you would just give me one minute to explain myself."
"And I wish you would just leave me alone. Be honest with yourself, Derek. You are not the type to stay faithful or loyal to one woman, that's not you, and it's ok. You are doing a great job being Zoe's dad, so I'll advise you to just stick to that and stop trying to get involved with me."

"Please, don't say that."
"I promise I'll stay out of your way. So, feel free to invite as many women as you want to your bachelor pad. I won't judge you for that."
"You have got it all wrong, Rachel."
"Have I? What about that sank in your apartment right now?"
"She's not there now."
"Oh, you sent her away because of me? You shouldn't have, seriously."
"I didn't send her away. She went shopping - I mean she went out to eat."
Rachel laughed and shook her head. "You are unbelievable, Derek. Do you really think that you can eat your cake and have it? You want to date me and your side piece at the same time?"
"No, that's not what I was trying to say. She'll return to New York tomorrow."
"So, where will she be staying tonight?"
Derek rubbed the bridge of his nose with his fingertips. The more he tried to redeem himself, the more he ruined everything.
"She'll stay at my place tonight but we will not sleep in the same room."
Rachel couldn't hide the disgust in her voice. "I refuse to be a pawn in your dirty game, Derek. If dating multiple women is what gets your rocks off, then, by all means, go ahead. But I refuse to be a part of that nonsense." "You are misunderstanding me, Rachel. Cassie and I are not together, we never were. We were just..."
"Fuck buddies?" Rachel asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Sort of," Derek reluctantly admitted. "But that was before I came here to find you and Zoe."
Rachel sighed. "Listen, you're a grown man and you don't need to explain your lifestyle to me. If you'll excuse me, I'd like to get back to what I was doing before you showed up." "Rachel - "
She closed the door before Derek could get another word out.
