Chapter 146 

Emma took a deep look at the sky outside the window, just like a bird eager to fly out of its cage. 

She then took a deep breath, turned around, and left with many materials and works of art. 

She wanted to know more about the girl Daniel liked. 

Meanwhile, Carlos drove Edith back after the dinner party. He stroked her head while telling her not to visit other places. He would come to pick her up 

soon. 

She carefully got out of the car with a nod and looked around as if she were a thief. 

Seeing her get nervous whenever she came back, Carlos couldn’t help laughing. 

Edith returned to work. At 4 p.m., her phone suddenly rang. 

It was actually from Vanessa! 

Edith couldn’t help frowning in disgust. Already having nothing to say to that woman, she hung up the phone directly. 

Unexpectedly, the receptionist came to her after a while and said that Vanessa was coming. 

She was a little surprised. Vanessa actually came in person. 

She hesitated for a moment and walked out. 

Vanessa’s face was pale. With bags under her beautiful big eyes, it seemed that she hadn’t slept well for a long time. From her red and swollen eyes. she obviously had cried. 

Vanessa’s eyes flickered with hatred the moment they met, but… she seemingly had no choice but to hold her emotion back. 

“Edith, what have you done to Johann in hell? I’m married to him and already pregnant with his child. Why can’t he forget you until now?” 

She glared at Edith as if wanting to eat her alive. 

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she pointed at Edith’s nose and questioned her. 

“You can leave now if you come here to talk that nonsense. I have nothing to say to you.” 

Edith turned to leave upon finishing speaking but was stopped by Vanessa. She grabbed her hand tightly, choked with sobs. 

“I have no choice but to come to you. Do you think I’m willing to suffer all this? Johann has had a high fever for two days. The doctor said that if it continued, his brain might be injured! He kept calling your name on the hospital bed and struggling. Even doctors couldn’t do anything about it! My parents–in–law asked me to resort to you, and I have to ask you for help. Otherwise… he will die. Do you know…” 

Edith trembled violently at her words. She didn’t expect Johann to fall badly ill. 

He rarely fell ill, but every time he did, he would call Edith for help. That child–like fragile man needed her comfort. 

She had gotten used to it. If Johann forgot to call her when he fell ill, she would definitely be angry if she found out later. 

But now… she almost forgot how close they used to be. 

They were strangers already. Why bothered to pity him? 

“You’re his wife. It’s you rather than I who should do it.” 

“Do you think I don’t want to? I’m Johann’s wife. Who do you think you are? But he only wants you now. I wonder what spell you have cast on him!” Vanessa said angrily. 

Edith produced a cold smile with her mouth corner curled. She turned around to shoot a stern glance at Vanessa. 

“Vanessa, no more nonsense. It is you who stole my beloved man. How dare you accuse me of seducing him?” 

“…” Vanessa was speechless. She did hate Edith, but she couldn’t refute her. 

In fact, she didn’t want to meet Edith. She would rather see Johann die of illness than come to ask her for help humbly. Yet, Johann’s parents urged her to do so,she had to give in. 

If she didn’t bring Edith back, her life in the Davis family wouldn’t be easy, either. 

“Edith, you don’t want Johann to be in danger, right? After all, you used to love each other. Even if you’ve broken up, you still won’t stand by, right? No one can help him except you. He’s so sick and needs you badly…” Vanessa said humbly, trying her best to be persuasive. 

Edith clenched her fists. She couldn’t stand by 

What if Johann died of illness? Could she forgive herself? 

She took a deep breath and finally agreed. “Well, you asked me to do it for you. I didn’t take the initiative to visit him. Listen. If you made trouble for me afterward, don’t blame me for being rude.” 

“Okay. Let’s set off at once.”

Edith picked up her belongings, asked for a day off, and left with Vanessa. 

When she arrived at the ward, Johann’s parents were waiting anxiously As soon as they saw her, they grabbed her hand tightly as if she was their savior. 

She had never experienced such enthusiasm from them! 

“You finally arrived, Edith. Hurry to visit our son. He’s in a coma and has been calling your name. Please save him!” 

Edith turned to Johann lying on the hospital bed. His face was pale and his brows heavily knitted as if he was having a nightmare. 

He was raising his hands high as if wanting to seize something. 

As soon as Edith approached, she was caught by his hand. 

This time, he tightened his grip instead. 

“Edith… don’t go. Edith… I won’t let go of your hand again. Don’t leave me, okay? Edith…” 

As he spoke, tears welled up in the corners of his eyes, as if he was very sad. 

“He actually dreamed of my leaving,” Edith thought. 

She was a little stunned and sad. 

It was high time to burst into tears, but her eyes were dry enough. 

It turned out that Edith was totally over Johann. His affection at the moment couldn’t touch her at all. 

Suddenly, a doctor stepped forward to grab his hand. It was time to give him an injection. 

But he held Edith’s hand so tightly with both of his hands that the veins on his arms got fully revealed. It was not suitable for injection at all. 

The doctor turned to Edith awkwardly, hoping that she could do something to comfort the patient. 

Edith had no choice but to take a deep breath and whisper something against her will. “I’m not leaving, Johann. I’m not leaving…” 

It did work. Johann slowly calmed down. 

His parents were delighted. They quickly asked the doctor to give Johann an injection, and everything went on smoothly. The next treatment could be carried out. 

Seeing that it was almost done, Vanessa wanted to pull her away but was stopped by her parents–in–law. 

“Vanessa, you failed to do your job as his wife. Our son fell badly ill because you didn’t take good care of him!” 

Vanessa was speechless. 

“Is it really so? 

Ever since I’m pregnant, Johann is happy enough not to sleep with me again. Even if I want to look after him, there isn’t a chance at all! 

Now that Johann is ill, I have to run errands following their orders with the risk of suffering abortion. Why are they blind to all this?” she thought.
